making news in america this morning, breaking right now, terror in france. a large truck plowed through a crowd of people in nice during a holiday celebration. >> honestly the most terrified i've ever been. >> this morning we have new details about americans killed in that attack and the evidence just found in the truck that's helping investigators find out who that driver was. we're live with the latest. vice presidential pick. donald trump's potential running mate arriving in new york overnight even as trump calls off today's announcement. we're live in cleveland inside the arena where final preparations are under way for the rnc. opening up about race relations, a candid town hall on abc with president obama, hear his suggestions to ease tensions.

and let's get straight to that breaking news from the south of france. learning of americans among the victims of the attack in nice. >> at least two americans are dead. sean copeland and his 11-year-old son brody from texas. they were vacationing in france with the rest of their family. >> on social media prayers are going out to sean's wife and brody's brother and sister and his baseball team posted a photo that the team says was taken in nice just yesterday. >> at least 84 people were killed when that white truck that you see there plowed into crowds of people along nice's famous promenade. the truck's male driver opening fire before he was killed by police. >> it sent thousands running for safety all watching a fireworks display marking france's national holiday. >> there are new details about evidence found at the scene there in nice. we want to cross over and get the very latest from abc's jennifer

>> reporter: a joyful bastille day, celebration turned to horror. screams of panic and people running for safety. >> looking for a place to ride. >> reporter: new video this morning showing the semi truck turned lethal weapon killing dozens injuring more than 150. >> i did see it hit a few people and then there were a few people lying on the ground. >> reporter: authorities say that truck was loaded with arms and grenades. the driver speeding through crowds for over a mile shooting a firearm out the window. >> you could hear, you know, words being mumbled. suci, like suicide. >> reporter: the driver was shot by police after an exchange of gunfire. this image of a bullet riddled windshield evidence of the carnage. >> honestly the most terrified i've ever been. >> reporter: authorities saying they're not aware of any accomplices developing this as an act of terror.

hollan saying all of france is under the threat of islamic terrorists. france has been a target for terror. just this past november, 130 people were killed as suicide bombers and gunmen opened fire inside a concert hall and france's national stadium. the country was put in a nationwide state of emergency. it was to be lifted in a matter of weeks, but it has now been extended for three more months. leaving france a nation on edge. we are also learning more about the man believed to be responsible for the assault. he was a 31-year-old dual french-tunisian national known to police as a petty criminal. we can also report at this stage, two americans are among the dead, a father and a son who were on vacation there in nice. kendis and diane. >> the sad headline we're getting overnight

and jennifer, many security experts say that nice actually has an elaborate system in place. how is that helping the investigators right now? >> cc-tv will play an ee norm part. the regional president there says some of the city's 1200 security cameras had pinpointed the moment the attacker boarded the truck which was well away from the seaside in the hills of nice and could follow his path to the promenade. and they, of course, are also focusing on any accomplices. diane, kendis. >> that's one of the things that they're focusing on this point in the investigation. jennifer eccleston, thank you. the area of nice where it took place next to the mediterranean sea and some of those people jumped into the water trying to find safety. >> many others sought shelter in nice's most famous hotel. one tourist said as she fled with her fiance it felt like the whole city was rncing. witnesses describing scenes of chaos. >> the truck drove through all the sec

talked to steve gomez, former fbi special agent in charge and abc contributor. you have this one attacker and also the tactic that was used. very different, right. >> oh, absolutely. what you now saw is this type of truck has the ability to penetrate through certain barriers whether it's the chain link fences, whether it's the wood, so they're going to have to evaluate how you protect against these types of attacks. the terrorists are watching every attack that is occurring and they're learning from those attacks and then they're looking to use those same types of techniques so law enforcement has to look at how these terrorists are using these types of -- whether it's weaponry, whether it's vehicles, they then have to deal with the security measures to ensure that that doesn't happen again because the terrorists are going to look to do that. >> what do you make of the weapons found inside the truck as well. >> the fact that these firearms and explosives were in the back, it's very interesting, kind of makes me wonder whether there was some co-conspirators that were going to be involved in the

stopped, then they were going to join in in the fight. that's something they'll look at. >> some interesting analysis there from stove gomez, also hearing some harrowing stories from all the witnesses. one of them from florida is now telling her story. >> talking about kayla rapan visiting france with her fiance. listen to her describe the terror. >> we just finished watching fireworks. there were thousands and thousands of people out here. and the fireworks had just ended. we started walking across the street towards the restaurant. >> the crowd moving in different directions and then i heard some gunshots but i thought it was fireworks. >> complete chaos and people were screaming, kids were crying. security guards were on their walkie-talkies. we were so close. >> i heard screaming and everyone was running in every direction. >> i heard loud noises and people started screaming and shots being fired

everyone started running in different parts. >> when we were running away, apart from all the screaming that we did hear shots fired which i seem to be the police. it was sheer terror. >> you can see and hear the terror from those clips that you saw right there. i mean that guy drove that truck for about a mile down the promenade there. >> it's unbelievable to think how long that went on before he was finally stopped and some witnesses said they didn't see the truck, they didn't see the gunfire. >> the lights weren't on. >> but they saw all these people running and just by instinct obviously they ran, as well and they said we couldn'ti tell wh was going on but we could tell something was very wrong. >> one of the things. you see fireworks and minor fireworks going off there. some people thought maybe there were some individuals who were popping off some fireworks at the time. they didn't realize it was gunshots that they were hearing. >> you really hope for a false alarm in that kind of

unfortunately not so in this case. and shifting gears now to a developing story here in this country, police if phoenix have leased a new sketch of a suspected serial killer wanted in connection can the deaths of seven people including a 12-year-old girl. police say the killings nearly all of them happened in a phoenix suburb and appear to be random. police in orlando are investigating a break-in at the pulse nightclub one day after the building was released back to its owners. it's been just over a month since 49 people were killed in a mass shooting at the club. the owner calls the break-in unspeakable. it's not clear if the club will re-open. we've got more news coming up including word that singer rihanna was in nice during last night's attack. also ahead a ceremony celebrating the life of pat summi summitt. how her friends and former players are paying tribute to her former legacy. there's a moment of truth. and with victoza®, a better moment of proof.

. that is the omni hotel in dallas, texas, lit up in blue, white and red, the colors of the french flag. the display last night meant to honor the victims of the attack in nice. especially poignant i should say now that we know that two american victims were from texas. a man and his 11-year-old son who were on vacation. the hotel was used to pay tribute to the five police officers kill in dallas one week ago. there were several events planned for this weekend in nice, france, and they have been canceled because of the terror attacks. that includes a concert by rihanna that was set for actually tonight. she was in nice during the attack but she was not on the waterfront where the attack took place. back here at home thousands celebrated the life of pat summitt gathering at the university of tennessee to remember her who died from alzheimer's last month. abc's robin roberts hosted the event and speakers

friend and a tireless fighter who changed history. >> okay, so get this, in southern california two people playing the popular pokemon go game on their cell phone fell off an ocean bluff. one man fell about 50 feet down the side of the unstable bluff. the other fell about 90 feet to the beach. they were rushed to the hospital and are recovering this morning. a teenager near dallas was so engrossed in the pokemon game that he didn't notice a snake near his feet. he was wearing flip-flops and was bitten on his big toe by a copperhead possibly. only one fang broke his skin so didn't need any anti-venom treatment. >> did he get the pokemon character? >> i have no idea. he was probably going for a lure. at the british open phil mickelson was 16 feet away from making golf history and this happened. >> yeah, he putt -- his putt there heads trait for the hole and rolls right over the lip. >> oh, no. >> it would have given him a 62

and son on vacation are now reported dead in a terror attack in nice , france. it happened last night as people were celebrating bastille day. a man drove a truck onto the sidewalk for more than a mile, mowing down people. he also fired a pistol into the crowd. police shot and killed the driver. they found firearms, explosives, and grenades in the truck. police say the driver was a 31-year-old man from nice of tunisian origin. another breaking story.. the search resumes this morning in lake barcrfoft in fairfax county for the body of a missing swimmer. around 7:30 last night, police responded to the area around lakeview drive. a 17-year-old boy had been swimming in the lake, and disappeared from the water's surface.

9-1-1.. and directed emergency responders to the site. police say this is now a recovery effort. the name of the missing teen has not been released. developing now.. a man who fired at baltimore police officers with an "a-r-15" style gun is dead, after officers returned fire. no police officers were injured. last night four plainclothes officers heard gunfire coming from near an apartment building near wheeler avenue and north bentalou street. a police spokesman says when officers arrived, the man started firing toward them. it's unclear why the man began shooting. there's still no word on his identity. ne-027th covering metro our first inside look at just how many problems have been found on the rails. and the data from the federal transit administration - is troubling. as of right now - there have been more than 11-hundred defects noted on the metro system. as jay korff reports, hundreds of those issues- still need to be addressed.
