a man, 31 years of age. born in understand tunisia and d here. plaud into the crowd -- plowed into the crowd. france is again the target of a terror attack, this time in the southern coastal city of nice. >> france, as a whole, has to share this emotion, the solidarity with the victims, with the people close to them, their family. reporter: we are getting new details about the horrific attack and the man responsible. mohamed lahouaiej bouhlel drove an 18-ton truck two kilometers down the promenade des anglais where hundreds gathered to celebrate bastille day. >> the music was so loud, there was literally screaming and running. it was mass confusion. reporter: engaged in a gun

was shot and killed. found in the passenger seat. in the truck, officials found a handgun, ammunition and a number of replica weapons. they also found his i.d. card. with only petty crimes in his background, he was previously unknown to intelligence services. >> whether nationally or locally, he had never been the subject of any kind or any indication of radicalization. reporter: this is the third terror attack on france in the past 18 months. the government announced they are extending the state of emergency by three months and will hold three days of mourning starting tomorrow. an all too familiar pattern. the country shaken by tragedy yet again. now authorities will want to know exactly what drove mohamed bouhlel to commit the atrocity in nice. they are ready, speaking, interviewing his

wife. he had two kids. some people said he was a quiet individual. others said he was rather strange. whatever way you look at it, the devastation he left in the path and the wake is astounding. we have heard 84 killed. ten adolescents. 52 critically ill. 25 in a coma. back to you. leon: before we let you go, one last question about the procedures right now security wise there in nice and across france. we know that the security state of emergency rather is being extended for another three months or so. what do you know about new security measures that may be going into place right now? reporter, well, you probably heard that the security measures were being eased. if you remember during the last attack we saw in france, we saw the police outside of the train stations across the country. many of those hoping

relax somewhat. especially because if you remember just on sunday you had the euro football championship in france. many people were breathing a sigh of relief there were no instances there. but four days later this has happened here. when i came in today to marseiile, not even in nice, two hours drive here, we had to wait for over an hour. security stepped up. i have a european passport but they are not taking chances. if you walk the promenade you see how much security presence there is across the country. it's significant and hawkish eyes on everyone. tourists as well as residents here. then you point out people here are extremely angry. the unity we saw in france in the last two attacks is somewhat waning. people no longer feel this should be the new norm. when the prime minister and the president

abroad following the attacks in france. alison: at&t and verizon announced they will wave any charges for calls and text messages to france for their customers for the next few days. at&t's offer will run through sunday. verizon will offer free calls and texts through tomorrow. michelle: security teams around the world are re-examining procedures after the seemingly simplistic attack. that is what is troubling for many people. using a truck as a weapon. scott taylor shows us what is done around here to guard against a similar attack. scott? scott: the next big event, of course, the nats and the pirates tonight in two hours. you know, around 7:00, this will be packed with people. thousands of people. i want to show you what is the difference here between the traffic and the people. this gate right here, so much like in nice, france, even though the nats do a great job of security, you've got not a

people and on coming vehicle. we saw this unfold in france, a crazy man drove through a crowd killing 84 people, ten of those were children. can it happen in d.c.? everyone we spoke to had one thing in common. for now take a look over your shoulder time and keep vigilant. it's easy to spot the safest places in washington, d.c., including the new a.t.f. building with the multiple ballards and a concede fortress between the street and the actual building. but what about our softer targets? spots like lines of people at a nats weekend series. or tourists crossing the street to see the next d.c. attraction. >> it just hits you. it kind of can alarm in your mind and make you wonder can it happen around me? anything is possible. who thought planes would hit the building? >> you have to be aware.

a moment of silence was observed on the trading floor before the opening bell. leon: if you know your american history you know that france is this nation's oldest ally. today, secretary of state john kerry and his russian counterpart broke away from meeting to bring flowers to the french embassy in moscow. alison: one of the shows of worldwide support. when paris was attacked last november the french embassy in d.c. is where many went to exdepressor row and support -- express their sorrow and support. ryan hughes is there today. ryan: good afternoon. many people are doing that once again today. families and people from all over the area have been stopping to show support. behind me you can see a woman from silver spring, singing for the victims killed in the terrible attack. people are dropping off candles and flowers. you can see signs "d.c. stands with nice." this memorial has been growing throughout

sentencing. kevin lewis has the conclusion to the brutal tale. fill us in. kevin: 24-year-old caseras will spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole. a sentence of that magnitude doesn't come down often in montgomery county. he is an ms-13 gang member, illegally immigrated to u.s. from el salvador in 2013. in an effort to secure a higher standing in that game. he killed oscar navarro in the basement of oscar's home. prosecutors say oscar was an innocent victim, father with two young kids and steady job. not a gang member. the killing barbaric. he used a 15-inch knife to mutilate and torture the body. he stabbed the 37-year-old 89 times. scalped him. removed his liver. if that

they knew it could be transmitted sexually from a man to a woman. the c.d.c. will update the guidelines on the prevention of sexual transmission in light of the latest case. leon: finally. it appears that the deflategate case is finally over. new england patriots quarterback tom brady announced on facebook he will end the legal battle to overturn his four-game suspension. earlier in week a u.s. appeals court rejected his appeal in the suspension. he could have gone all the way to the supreme court. but now he says he will not do it. the nfl imposed the suspension after an independent investigator hired by the league found he was likely involved in the scheme to underinflate footballs. a couple of days after it was reported that tim tebow is going to speak at he republican convention, he is now saying he is not going to go there. the retired football star says the reports were not correct. tebow was not on the speaker's list re

this is 2 area where he died at lake barcroft, around the bend there. this happened last night after 7:30. this is a photo of jeremy munga seen with a picture with his mother on a go fund me page. the family originally from belgium. he was a guest of a family here last night. he was swimming behind a boat when he reportedly attempted to swim to a nearby dock. lifeguards noticed a swimmer was in distress and they immediately jumped into action. fire and police officials from fairfax county soon arriving on the scene with a helicopter and also searching from above. this morning at 3:00, jeremy's body was found in ten feet of water. 15 feet from a dock. jeremy munga was a senior nearby at a high school, captain of the football team, track star and beloved by the classmates. >> one of the most genuine people you will meet.

a brother. >> there were people who didn't know him very well knew if they needed someone, to give them a smile or a hug they could go to jeremy for it. jeff: this has been a gut-wrenching week for the high school, particularly the football team. earlier in the week a member of the football team who graduated last year took his own life. last night the death of jeremy munga. it's just terrible what has happened to the school over the past week. coming up in a half hour we'll tell you what friends of jeremy munga will be doing this weekend to honor his life. alison: terrible. thank you. there is a program preparing the next generation of scientists. michelle: kellye lynn shows us how a non-profit is educating and inspiring girls

off the coast of louisiana. 11 rig workers were killed. leon: in baton rouge, louisiana, the man gunned down by officers was laid to rest. private service for alton sterling was held this morning. reverend jesse jackson and al sharpton were in attendance. the officers say they shot him because he tried to reach for a gun. his death along with the death of philando castile sparked national out cry. michelle: the ripple effect of that case is felt everywhere, including washington state. a restaurant worker told officers they couldn't eat there anymore because it was making other customers angry. the skagit county sheriff took the message to facebook where other customers penalled to boycott the restaurant. >> i didn't believe it at first. i said there must be a misunderstanding. ch

they just assumed nearby customers were being difficult because of the officers but they have since apologized and are inviting all law enforcement to eat for free at the restaurant on monday. alison: we have new information in the investigation in the friendly fire death of a prince george's county police officer jacai colson. earlier this year. abc7's john gonzalez has details. john: well, the questions have been raised, was it negligence or involuntary manslaughter? this afternoon, a prince george's county grand jury says no. it has been four months since police officer jacai colson was shot and killed right in front of his own police station. and just minutes ago the state's attorney angela alsobrooks gave us an update on the criminal case here at the district courthouse in upper marlboro telling us that police officer taylor krauss has been cleared by a grand jury. police believe it was krauss to tragically fatally wounded

as friendly fire. this started as unprovoked ambush on the afternoon of march 13. just days before officer colson's 29th birthday. an exchange of gunfire caught on cell phone video by the suspects. three brothers, michael, malik and elijah ford were named as the attackers. still being held without bond. all three charges with second-degree murder. >> over a seven-week period they have declined to return an indictment of charging officer taylor krauss who has been identified, officer taylor krauss as the shooter in this case. they have declined to return an indictment. john: officer krauss has been with the police force for six years has been on administrative leave for four months now waiting for the conclusion of this investigation. now the police department must conclude its own investigation before he can return to work if that is what he desires. in upper

horace: getting hot, huh? they are hot outside. >> out of the blue, the a.c. dies. horace: with no a.c., it was blazing, chris says. inside his house. with wife and two children under 3 under this roof, dent needed help. >> the wife goes to angie's list. she finds a company service doctor. horace: one call and a technician is there in a snap. dent says after a brief check the technician offered a diagnosis. >> you have a leak. freon leak. horace: great. he went to the bank and pulled out $350 and paid the man to fill the system with freon. >> he said it would take a few hours before we noticed it cooling down. horace: relief. finally. he thought. >> it's been running all night. the next morning it is not any different. horace: so he called service doctors back and the technician returned the next day. >> in five minutes he says your compressor is bad. you have to replace the unit.

thousands of dollars, so they went to get a second opinion. the new company discovered this. >> right there. there is the leak. horace: a hole. right there. where the freon flows through the hvac system. >> do you need a new compressor? >> no. the problem is the hole. that drained all the freon out. horace: the technician said he can plug the hole, replace the freon. >> he said i can fix it. but you should go back to the company who was here the other day. horace: he did. service doctor, he says, insisted that dent needs a new compressor. what about the $350 for the freon that apparently drained out? >> he was adamant he would not refund my money. i felt taken advantage of. i don't like being taken advantage of. horace: they ended up to get the second company they called to fix the hvac system so the cool air is flowing in the house right now. we tried to contact service doctors and called repeatedly. be no one with the company called us back. the better business bureau did talk to us
