what it's like to be melania trump. and in a different kind of politics tonight, a swift response making news. the famous feud between kanye west and taylor swift reaching new heights after kim kardashian west shared secret recordings. didn't take long for swift to fire back. but first here tonight, the "nightline" five.

good evening from the quicken loans arena in cleveland. scene of a republican convention that is already, on day one, breaking all the rules. normally conventions are love fests. coronations. but today, we saw a bitter fight on the floor right here behind me. normally we don't hear from the nominee until the final night, but donald trump arrived here tonight in dramatic fashion. it's your voice, your vote. a theatrical entrance for donald trump, walking out in silhouette to the tune of "we are the champions." >> oh, we're gonna win, we're gonna win so big. thank you very much. >> trump introducing his wife, melania. >> the next first lady of the united states -- >> she took the stage and essentially introduced herself to america. >>

small, beautiful, and then communist country in central europe. >> ironically, given the contentious role of immigration in this campaign, she told what was in many ways, a classic immigration story. >> from a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. that your word is your bond, and you do what you say, and keep your promise. that you treat people with respect. >> she also endeavored to soften donald trump's image. >> he's tough when he has to be, but he's also kind and fair and caring. this kindness is not always noted, but it is there for all to see. that is one reason i fell in love with him to begin with. >> donald trump has been accused of causing divisions, but his wife put a different spin

intentionally targeted and assassinated. >> and we heard from the alleged shooter himself, a former marine. in this video he made and posted online. >> it's a time for piece, but it's a time for war. most of the times when you want peace, you gotta go to war. >> blue lives matter in america! >> night one of the republican convention also had some celebrity touches, willy rob ert o. ertson from the show "duck dynasty." >> america is in a bad spot, and we need a president who will have our back. and i can promise you this, no matter who you are, donald trump will have your back. >> and scott baio, famous for playing chachy on "happy days." >> hillary clinton wants to be president for hillary clinton. donald trump wants to be president for all of us. >> while tonight's event was tightly scripted

choreographed, the convention got off to an unruly start for trump. >> delegates, once again, i need your help and your cooperation. >> an outright revolt on the floor. >> you are ignoring delegates who have been elected to this convention. >> anti-trump delegates tried to force a role call on the rules which bind the delegates to vote for trump. >> point of order! >> "nightline" was right there, as the rebels put their plan into action. >> this is the ten states. >> yeah. at 12:45 this afternoon, we had the only camera in the room as a group called "delegates unbound" stuffed the petitions they'd gathered into an envelope. >> i gotta hurry. >> so we have the signatures. the signatures were handed off to this man, former senator from new hampshire, named gormd gordon humphrey who was take over the effort

he tried to find the secretary of the convention to hand it to her. >> the secretary is absent. big mystery. >> so at this point, they walked straight through the convention floor, on a quest that would make modern convention history. finally they found somebody to whom they could hand the signatures. i understand that you are stating tha you are authorized to accept petitions. >> yes, sir. >> these are our petitions. >> not long thereafter, the chairman of the convention came to the podium and basically rammed the rules through. all those in favor, say aye. all those opposed, no. in the opinion of the chair, the ayes have it. pandemonium ensued. as the chairman walked off stage, we saw the type of discord you basically never see at modern conventions. one guy threw down his credentials. the entire colorado delegation walked out, leaving rows of

supposed to be love fests. >> it is. this is love here. >> this is love? >> in the biggest possible way. >> finally the chairman came back on stage and ran the vote again. those in favor of the rules package will say aye. >> aye! >> those opposed shall say "no". >> no! >> in the opinion of the chair, the ayes have it. >> same result. >> what do you think of what just happened there? >> it was a travesty. it was a sham, it was a fix. >> this is all to the benefit of hillary clinton. >> so what. if they're going to conduct themselves in that way, by that i mean the rnc, then they have no business winning any elections anyway. >> it's hard to overstate what a huge departure this was from recent conventions where the

form formality. 20 years ago, ted koppel dismissed the relevance of the whole exercise. >> this convention is more of an infomercial than a news event. nothing surprising has happened. nothing surprising is anticipated. >> but nothing is simple in this year of trump. >> point of order. >> and that floor fight today was not the only unusual development. in another break from tradition, hillary clinton was out on the trail. usually the candidate from the opposing party lays low during the other team's convention. not this time. >> what can i do? what can i do to stop this dangerous, divisive candidate from getting within a thousand miles of the white house? well, i can tell you, it is not enough to yell at your tv screen. >> and then there was this, the man who ghost wrote trump's iconic bestseller, the art of the deal, came forward to say he regrets pushing forward trump's career. >> this is a man with mor

was none too happy about it. at the time of the song's release, her rep saying it had a misogynistic attitude. fast forward to last night and kim kardashian posting on snap chat a phone call from kanye and taylor talking about the song. >> i'm really glad that you have the respect to call me and tell me that as a friend about the song. >> reporter: the star says she's speaking out to defend her husband. >> i'm just like speaking the truth. he called her, spoke to her. >> swift firing back on instagram saying i was never given the full story, or played any part of the song. going on to say, i would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, since 2009.
