jonathan: we are trying to get a better ideas of what is happening outside the arena. there is only a handful arrests so far. no real violence. but there has been tension and confrontations. there are representatives from black lives matter and westboro baptist church and from the ku klux klan all outside. keep in mind outside the arena there is an area where people can protest. they are outnumbered by police by 3:1. the police presence is significant. they knew going in the convention they would have to arrest some people because some protesters would get out of hand. this protest this afternoon, people were clashing, some yelling going on. you see people lying in the street. we haven't heard of violence. we have only heard of a handful of people getting arrested. up until this there had been only five arrests complete. one was for outstanding warrant. a couple of people tried to

banner and they got arrested. no violence. just mischief. this is the first sign we have seen but as you can see the protesters are outnumbered by police 3-1. they have a ring around the arena. we will continue to follow what is happening outside the arena. go live to the chief political correspondent scott thuman. we will have him in a few minutes. he is inside the r.n.c. for day two. meantime, back to you. leon: thanks, jonathan. we are going back out to breaking news coming in from prince george's county. drivers are urged to avoid b.w. parkway. there is a crash there. landscaper critically hurt in a crash on the northbound side. the traffic is diverted off the parkway to route 410. the southbound lanes are slowing down for several miles as the people slow down to make their way around the site and rubber neck. we will keep you posted on what happens there. another challenge for the metro riders to deal

maureen: abc7 reported extensively on the transit agency safety issues for several months. now there is one more problem to add to the list. it could make commuters very uncomfortable. transportation reporter brianne carter is live with what she discovered. brianne: well, today we found if you get on the wrong car you could be sweating it out during your commute. we came here in the gallery mace metro station and rode the red line end to end. on the second train we got on we found a hot car. now this has been something metro riders have been complaining about. the problem now is we are finding them on the new 7000-series rail cars. when we got on the train and rode it to the end. by the time we got to the end of the red line, the temperature getting into that car above 90 degrees. during our commute we saw riders who ended up in the hot car swapping cars. as soon as thai could at the next stop. metro says the issue is with the trains on board com

in a -- vol tan fluctuates. the on board computers will turn off the hvac system and then require a reset before the air can continue. the cars are all under warranty. the manufacturer is here it at metro working to address the issues quickly. riders saying having issues the the new cars so soon is frustrating. >> i was dry when i got on the car. now i'm sweating. pouring. i mean for a person not in good health, i'm okay. imagine someone that is old, elderly person not in good health. they are in trouble. easy to succumb to something on the train on metro. brianne: metro says with the majority of the 7000-series rail cars the hvac system works great. we found that as well. 72-75 degrees using temperature gauge on board the train. metro wrk

leon: groundskeepers at arlington national cemetery walked off the job. they want a contract to give them a pay increase and paid sick leave. the workers union trying to negotiate a new contract for eight months. the workers previously threatened to go on strike in may before memorial day. maureen: flights resumed between dulles international airport and turkey following last week's attemptr tempted coup -- attempted coup. they lifted the ban earlier than the august 31 date. a first flight landed at dulles and another coming this evening. also today turkey sent an official request to the united states for extradition of goulan, the pennsylvania cleric who is accused of masterminding friday's coup attempt. turkey says the failure to extradite him immediately will threaten to derail the relationship between the two countries. the state department has not

today media mogul russell simmons addressed the group. sam ford was there. sam: on the third day of the convention noble heard from the police chief welcoming them to the city and lamenting the times. the main speaker was hip-hop businessman russell simmons who told the officers and their families he is afraid when the police pull him over that relations have to improve. noting the difficulty he had with a recent event. >> there was no way to get black lives matter and police on the stage together. i don't understand that. if we matter we have to have a dialogue. sam: he told them he created and is funding a program in 25 cities called "peacekeepers." a need he told us. >> this is a moment for us to take advantage of the lives. not to let them have died in vain. do good work. sam: it's mainly social events between residents and the
