back to you. >> marcy, let me get this. i guess trump wasn't officially supposed to be the nominee until later on. what happened? >> reporter: right. initially the gop said he wouldn't officially become the nominee on thursday when he had his speech. instead, after the vote they declared mike pence and donald trump are the party nominees. it doesn't make that much of a difference. it's a technicality that changes when the fund raising begins and general election. >> a lot of talk throughout the course of yesterday about melania's speech. any more of a response from the campaign? >> reporter: no. we still haven't heard directly about those accusations from either donald for melania trump. they haven't said anything. trump's campaign manager has been outspoken, denying the accusations that she plagiarized the speech. he said the themes were

really personal to melania trump and clearly also personal to michelle obama. he says this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. >> and trump is now banned from using songs from the rolling stones, adele, kneel young, twisted sister, rem, and as of the first night, queen. what's he going to do thursday night? >> reporter: yeah. i don't know. he's going to have to just hum to himself. i don't know. as for the queen song, it's not official that he's not going to be able to use that song. there was some controversy, though, because they played "we are the champions", and then queen, the group that's representing queen, put out a message saying they're frustrated by the repeated unauthorized use of the song after previous requests to desist which has obviously been ignored by trump and his company. it says queen does not want to be associated in any way with mainstream o

but the rnc communication director tweeted that the gop convention actually paid to license the song specifically for use here in this arena, so -- >> the plot thickens. >> reporter: you might still hear the song. >> and not the first time the presidential candidate has dealt with it. i feel like we deal with this almost every year. >> we'll with b be checking in with marcy throughout the morning. >> a governor of ohio, john kasich, staying away from the rnc, but yesterday he came pretty close. >> kasich held a reception at the rock and roll hall of fame a mile away from the convention. he thanked nearly 2,000 ohio republicans for their support, and he said he left the race because he felt if he had gone forward, he would have had to tell people things he doesn't believe are true. >> concerning words from another top republican who shi

from donald trump, george w. bush reportedly told former aids he's worried he could be the last republican president. according to politico he made the comment this past april. that's when the primary was down to trump and cruz. and some convention speakers are on thing not to mention trump by name, suggesting they may be lukewarm about his candidacy. >> but virtually everyone is on the same page when it comes to blasting hillary clinton. let's get more now from rick kline. good morning. >> reporter: a trump family affair, night to of the republican national convention in cleveland. tiffany trump and donald trump junior giving well received speeches about their dad. this campaign is in search of unity in terms of people being angry. some delegates had the

on abcnews.com. moving on. another police officer killed in the line of duty. 46-year-old robert melton, a 17 year veteran of the kansas city mr. preside police department was shot and killed. the alleged shooter is in custody. melton is the second kansas city officer to be killed on the job this year. he served in afghanistan as part of the kansas army national guard. >> and the baton rouge army most seriously injured remains in critical season. he has 18 years of service with the east baton rouge sheriff's office. residents turned out to show their support for law enforcement. they also called for increased ties between police and the community. >> writer director, and actor, garry marshall passed away. he's best known happy days as well as lavern and shirley, as

he later moved to the big screen directing 18 films, including "pretty woman" starring julia roberts and richard gear. he died after suffering a stroke. he was 81 years old. >> the governor of new york says it's nothing short of a miracle that no one was killed when a construction crane crashed. four drivers received minor injuries. but not one vehicle was actually hit in that collapse. while it created a traffic night mire, most of the lanes of the bridges are already open. outside boston, a man lost control of his car hitting three members of family visiting from california. they suffered broken bones. they are also expected to recover. the 90-year-old driver was slightly injured. he doesn't remember much about the crash and is upset people were hurt. >> a texas man says he's too old to be going down water slides. and here's why. >> so here

19 of the senators never made it to cleveland for the convention. where all the missing republican senators? 19 didn't show up. >> i think the most important ones are here. so thank you. i'm glad you're here. >> reporter: and even when top republicans do show up, as at this party sponsored by billionaire donors and consultants, the name trump is barely mentioned. republican party chairman mentioned the candidate's name only once in his welcoming remarks. outside over cigars and cocktails, republicans prepared for a convention and election unlike any they'd seen before. >> those dance moves are worth something. so the republican cleveland committee, the host committee, they were trying to raise some $64 million for the campaign, but the local county only contributed about $15 million
