this is a breaking news alert. michelle: that breaking news is out of germany where people are being told to stay inside of their homes while police search for the person or people who open fire inside of a shopping mall in munich. it's next to the olympic stadium where 11 israeli athletes were killed in the 1972 games. let's get to leon harris at the "live desk" with the latest. leon: the latest is six people are killed and others are wounded. they suspect terrorism but they haven't yet called this a terrorist attack. here is what happened. a shooting inside of a mall at a mcdonald's just before 6:00 p.m. on a friday in munich. witnesses say three men with guns entered the mall. but that number not yet confirmed officially. public transportation in munich shut down as police try to find out who is responsible. the state department told all american citizens in germany to sta

in the last hour, president obama spoke out about the shooting and said many details are unclear at the moment but the u.s. will provide germany with whatever it needs. this by the way is the second attack in germany in less than a week. you may recall on tuesday a teen attacked five passengers on a train with an ax. we will follow the latest developments on the case there in germany and we will bring you the latest once we get new information. for now, back to you. jonathan: thank you for that. turn the attention now to the heatwave. the possibility of some very oppressive temperature in the next few days. chief meteorologist doug hill is here with what you need to know. as the afternoon grew on, it got hotter and hotter. doug: temperatures come up. the humidity levels come up. the way it feels outside becoming more and more oppressive. these are air temperatures now. 93 in reagan national. 93 in manassas and frederick. 91 in annapolis. the dew point, the crucial number here once it hit 70 with these temperatures then it starts to feel oppressive. and these values will both continue to rise through saturday, sunday and a

monday. here is what it feels like outside as we speak. feels like 103 in leesburg. 101 in culpeper. 99 in washington. frederick, fredericksburg and annapolis as well. as we go through the evening hours we'll stay partly cloudy. very warm. and increasingly muggy temperatures in the low 90's for the first pitch tonight at the park. as far as any relief from the heat, we have been watching showers diminish during the day. they will continue to diminish tonight. a chance of an isolated thunderstorm to cool us off tomorrow but the better chances aren't coming until monday afternoon. in the meantime we are talking air temperatures approaching 100 degrees tomorrow, and sunday and monday. heat index values the way it feels outside 105 degrees. but there are no advisories or warnings or anything for the heat issued yet. we will have more about those possibilities in a couple of minutes. jonathan: thank you. you hear those temperatures, these are not the kind of temperatures to mess around with at all. right now at wjla.com we have a list of cooling centers across the area for you. if you need those.

in the forecast over the next few days now is a great time to check it out as women. museums can be a great place to cool off if you need to go outside and want to go out on a hot day today. but it wasn't an option at several popular museums near the national mall. ryan hughes picks up the team coverage from northwest washington. hey, ryan. ryan: you just heard how hot it is. now we are having major power problems down here. a lot of the museums are affected. at the newseum a sign on the door letting people know it's closed because of the power outages. the doors are also locked. we saw a lot of different people turned away. show you video we shot a little bit ago this afternoon. the power went out around noon. a lot of people were not allowed in because of the power problems. some of the museums affected the arthur and the sackler gal ryia of arts, african museum of national arts, the national museum of the american indian and theri

chance on the national change next week. abc7s chief political correspondent scott thuman and brad bell will be in philadelphia for the d.n.c. look for the live reports and specials starting on monday. michelle: the former leader of the ku klux klan says he plans to run for u.s. senate in louisiana. david duke made the announcement today on his website. in the video he said he believes in equal rights for all americans. but demands respect for european americans. he then went on to say he is overjoyed to see donald trump embrace most of the issues he has championed for years. this news comes, of course, as the racial tensions in louisiana are running very high after a police shooting death and the murder of three police officers in baton rouge. jonathan: in fact, michelle, a funeral was held for one of the baton rouge officers. hundreds of family and friends said the final goodbyes to officer matthew gerald. gerald served four year

the army before becoming a police officer earlier in year. he leaves behind a wife and two children. texas company donated the caskets for the ceremonies of all the officers that were gunned down. michelle: major new developments out of miami in the police shooting of a black care-giver who was lying in the street trying to help a patient with autism. the union representing the officer says the victim was not the intended target. charles kinsey was shot on monday. that is him in the green shirt on the ground there. the shooting shows he had both of his hands up in the air. the police union says the officer was trying to shoot the patient but missed his target. kinsey's lawyer says the story doesn't add up. >> i don't understand just like the rest of america how someone could possibly try to justify this. they would be much better off saying sorry to my client. michelle: and this afternoon, it was announced the commander for the north miami police department has been suspended

with temperatures expected to be in the 90's for all three games, staff at the park are working to make sure fans stay cool while they are cheering on the team. suzanne kennedy shows us the plan to help you beat the heat. suzanne: we have been out here all morning long watching this just climb. it will continue to climb as we go through the day. take a look at this guy up here. bryce harper. he hit a crusher of a home run. 450 feet on wednesday night. he is hot. you know who else is going to be hot? all the fans that go through the gates at 7:00 tonight. but the nats are taking provisions to make sure that all of their fans stay safe. here is what they are doing. they are opening two cooling centers inside the park in the kennedy and the roosevelt rooms. at the conference center here at the park. they want to make sure even takes advantage of that. also they are allowing people to bring in two one-liter bottles. they have to be sealed. bottle of water to make sure people will stay hydrated and allowing people to bring in b

it will be hard to cool off anywhere outside. here is the current feels like temperature. these are the most important numbers. these are the legit numbers for what it does feel like. what happens in the heatwave it feels over 100 degrees or near 100 throughout the day. but at night the feels like temperature stay in the 80's. so you never really cool off. 103 is the feels like in leesburg. feels like 99 in washington and annapolis. it feels like 99 in fredericksburg. doppler radar, showers in the afternoon. moving out of west virginia, showers diminish in harrisburg. overnight very warm and muggy. 72 to 77. the range of overnight temperatures. then once the sun comes up at 6:00 tomorrow morning a rapid increase throughout the day. it will be quite uncomfortable. the citi open forecast tomorrow. check this out. the high will be about 99 degrees in the city. about 4:00 p.m. with the humidity it will feel like 105

the area. future heat index gives you an idea based on computer modeling that at 2:30 sample feels like temperatures not guaranteed. general ballpark. 106 in the district. 108 in leesburg. 107 in fredericksburg. 102 in baltimore. that's what we are talking about. not to the consistent hour after hour of 105 degrees to require a heat advisory but close to it. by sunday afternoon we back it off a couple degrees. still 100 degrees. on monday, back to 105 for the heat index. it will be tough. the next seven days no real relief from the heat. i mean we go from 99 saturday to a high of 93 next weekend. so, a little bit better maybe. but hot and humid weather. maybe a stray storm tomorrow. better chance of late day shows monday and tuesday. jonathan: not a good time to wash the car. doug: that's what teenagers are for. i got two of them. jonathan: i will bring my car to yo

michelle: jay korff is live for us at reagan national airport with a look at some of the passengers' frustrations about how they are being compensated for their troubles. what are they being offered, jay? jay: some of the things that southwest is offering is travel vouchers, a couple hundred dollars. they are waiving the fees if you are going to rebook but you have to do it fairly quckly. in some cases they are offering refunds but the customers we talk to said it's been tough to get the refunds quickly. there are still a cascade of problems. there are cancellations, st. louis, little rock, chicago in the last few minutes so still p

julie and her mother are trying to get home to minnesota in time for a family reunion. they hope to make it. but for now they wait patiently at reagan national airport. >> surprise, surprise. on the way to the airport i got canceled. jay: southwest airline canceled their flight thursday afternoon. one of thousands dropped due to crashing servers and backup systems that cared according to the -- that failed according to the carrier. the earlier they could rebook was 24 hours later. other customers we talked to had flights canceled wednesday and thursday. the next problem rebooking and refunds. some customers say they got couchers but the refunds -- vouchers but the refunds are harder to come by. customers tell us they have had a difficult tame sometimes spending hours on the phone to reach an agent and solve a particular issue. they admit it will take time to get back to normal. the chief operating officer apologized on the airline's facebook page. >>

that was a job today that was rudely interrupted. we went to check on a house fire. a ceiling fan in the attic caught on fire. nobody hurt. but the firefighters are racing around the scene wearing the full gear, 70 pounds of gear they are dealing with in all of this heat. the authorities telling not just firefighters but just ordinary people to watch out for your neighbors. let's listen. >> if you know you have somebody in your neighborhood that could be susceptible to the heat. check on them. they are your neighbor. go out there and make sure people are doing the right thing so we don't have any casualties from the heat we expect in the next couple of days.

great advice. at 6:00, you will get an inside look. we will be inside one of the fire trucks. you can see how the folks are trying to keep other folks cool and go on rescue calls as well and keep themselveses okay with all the heat. in falls church, richard reeve, abc7 news. jonathan: that gear has to get really warm. air conditioning is out at the d.c. jail. it has correction officials scrambling to move inmates. d.c. bureau chief joining us live at the jail with details on this one. sam? sam: the air conditioning is not out. it's just not very good in some part of the jail. they have air conditioning in there. they have 1,200 inmates. but over the last few days a number of inmates have been moved because of the heat. the city spokesperson says since last tuesday, nearly 180 inmates have been moved from hotter to cooler parts of the jail complex. for example to the correctional treatment facility. another 20 moved to virginia. the main

with air conditioning and extreme heat. the spokesperson said they have been doing what she called a medical triage on inmates based on the health conditions and aim. inmates over 50 have all been moved to cooler areas. this comes after a 70-year-old inmate died last week of a stroke. now the jail has insisted that it was not heat-related. but an autopsy report is pending. there are increasing calls for a new jail. and the jail right now holds about 1,200 inmates. i'm sam ford, abc7 news. back to you. jonathan: the weather story in our area is heat. but in wisconsin it's rain. look at the rain. severe storms ripping through the state. streets are flooded. strong winds knocking down trees. which led to power outages. four people were hurt while staying at a camp

michelle: secretary of state john kerry says climate change is as dangerous if not more dangerous than the threat of isis and other extremist groups. he made the comments this morning in an international conference on climate change. kerry says the issue may not get as much attention as terrorism, but it's just as important because it could literally save life on planet earth. a couple in california really took the leap when they recently got engaged. it started when they decided to go sky diving. the woman said on her way down from 18,000 feet above the ground she saw a message from her boyfriend proposing to her. >> in my head it was like will you marry me? i was like oh, my god. is that for me? then it said my name "erin" and i was like oh, my gosh! i realized what was happening. michelle: that i

they are not sure if it's one of the shooters. the latest body count is one of the attackers is down. but the investigators as i said are just not sure. police in munich say the scene does look like a terror attack. at this hour, member of germany antiterrorism squad are on the way to the scene. there could be as many as three shooters they are looking for out on the loose. the shooting happened inside a malibu the mcdonald's is connected to the mall. it happened before 6:00 in the evening germany time. public transportation in munich shut down. state department telling all american citizens in germany to shelter-in-place and stay out of plain view. president obama spoke about the shooting and said while few details are known, the u.s. will provide germany with whatever it needs. the olympia mall where it happened is munich's busiest shopping center near a major transit hub, right across the street from olympic park where the 19722 olympic games were held. this becomes the second attack in germany in less than a week.
