after a transportation hub. train station next door. they shut down the transportation. surrounded the mall. there is a huge presence there from the police. what they are not sure at this point is a lone gunman or are there multiple gunmen? they did not get accurate reporting from people there so it's confusing. so with that said, they are searching for other potential suspects in this case. other gunmen. we know one body found at the location had a gun next to it and they believe it was one if not the only gunman who took his own life after opening fire. the scene at the hospital they have been taking the victims, some heartbreaking. there were small children inside the mcdonald's. he started there and walked out and then walked back in and started going toward the mall. a very busy mall this time of day. as soon as we get more information about what is happening there, specific information. right now again as i said

fluid. eight killed, others wounded and one gunman that may be down. he may be the only gunman. maureen: we are following the attacks and we will bring you the latest developments when we learn them. leon: the other big story we're following is the dangerous heat on the way as we brace for the hottest stretch we felt in a long time. chief meteorologist doug hill got a look at it for us. doug: we may be by next friday the high may be down to 93. it will be tough. heat and the humidity. let's get you started here. the current numbers 91 at reagan national airport. thank goodness for cloudiness now. that is helping to knock a couple degrees off the thermometer. dew point is 72. it feels like 98 in washington. 101 in leesburg. the numbers will only climb over the next few days. 72 to 77 tonight. very muggy conditions. for the weekend at the citi open, the

mid-afternoon tomorrow. close to 100 degrees. i will feel like 105. the heat and the humidity like that will continue through sunday and monday and probably into tuesday as well. we'll look ahead for you in the next seven days. leon: they are working to protect inmates from the extreme heat. inmates had to be moved to another part of the facility after failed a.c. when the temperatures reach dangerous levels like this and we will continue to see it the emergency responders step up the efforts to make sure everyone is safe. richard reeve is riding along with the crews as they work to keep others and themselves cool and safe. he joins us with what he saw on the roads today. what was it like out there? richard: you can feel the heat here at fire station number ten.

they had the turnout gear good to go here. one of the main jobs is to check for people in trouble with the heat. today that task was interrupted. [sirens] inside a cramped unair conditioned ladder truck we are on the way to an urgent ladder call. fairfax firefighter scramble to get the turnout gear on. 70 pounds worth. heavy burden in this heatwave. >> it's extremely dangerous as the temperatures rise. richard: moments before they were on hot weather patrol looking for people overcome with the heat. >> we check on the gentleman here out in the sun working on the vehicle. richard: not a medical energy but a dead battery. >> the battery died. richard: emergency crews are well equipped to deal with the heat issues.

stormwatch7 app for the smart phone. maureen: thank you, leon. in the race for the white house, hillary clinton broke from her campaigning today to mourn the victims of last month's attack at orlando's pulse nightclub. she is speaking right now at a rally in tampa with many speculating she could announce her running mate possibly virginia senator tim kaine. jeff goldberg is keeping an eye on this for us. you spoke with mr. kaine yesterday, i understand. what did he have to say about the possibility of his being vice presidential candidate? jeff: he didn't say much, maureen. he doesn't want to fuel the speculation. today he was quiet as well. according to the report tim kaine is still the number one candidate on hillary clinton's v.p. list. but she has not made that announcement yet. she is set to text or tweet the announcement. we think it is coming today. everyone is checking phones looking for the gnaws but so far nothing -- for the news

look at hillary clinton in tampa, florida. she is offering a blistering critique in the last 15 or 20 minutes of donald trump and his speech last night at the republican national convention. now to tim kaine. he was in boston today for a democratic fundraiser and slated for another one today in rhode island. camera crews catching up with the virginia senator. he had no comment on the v.p. search. hillary clinton before the rally in tampa as maureen mentioned holding a round table discussion in orlando with victims, family members and the first responders of the pulse nightclub shooting. last week you may remember clinton and tim kaine appeared together in annandale. they had a good rapport. laughing and smiles. tim kaine who is fluent in spanish could help hillary clinton with latino voters nationwide. another big aspect is the popular standing in the key swing state of virginia. >> you talk about somebody who has won statewide elections in a given state. they hav

over the place. these are democratic activists who work to elect hillary clinton, they work that much harder if there is a virginian on the ticket. jeff: that could be another reason that tim kaine as we have been hearing number one on her list. i have been in contact with people in the kaine campaign throughout the day. they have not received any information from the clinton campaign. so it seems as though at the moment they are waiting just like the rest of us. we do expect an announcement at some point today from hillary clinton on who her v.p. pick will be. it's remarkable it has not leaked. everybody watching closely as we wait for the big announcement. back to you, maureen and leon. maureen: thank you. donald trump followed up his marathon speech from last night's republican convention by rekindling his publish feud with senator ted cruz. while addressing supporters in cleveland, trump spent 15 minutes blast his formal rival and he said he discuss not want cruz's endorsement -- he does not want cruz's endorsement.

maureen: we are following some breaking news from gainesville, virginia, where fire crews are searching for a possible victim inside a home destroyed by the fire. sky track 7 was over the scene in the hour. firefighters we're told had to truck in water because of the home's remote location. leon? leon: maureen, new information tonight on a story we first told folks about last week. f.b.i. released pictures of weapons stolen out of an agent car. the items were stolen overnight on sunday july 10. the car was parked near h and 7th street in northeast. the suspect got a handgun, rifle, radio and a holster. anyone with information should call police. maureen: police are investigating a rash of early morning a.t.m. thefts. in the past month, someone has stolen the a.t.m. machines from six businesses. and in each case the thieves

maureen: volkswagen reportedly has a plan to fix thousands of diesel engine vehicles programmed to cheat on emissions tests. industry sources say the cars will get a computer software update and a larger catalytic converter. well, volkswagen, as you might recall admitted their cars were programmed to turn on emissions controls during testing and turn them off while the cars were on the road. the e.p.a. will now have to approve the plan. leon: we are getting an up close view tonight of the metro long-term repair plan better known as safetrack. maybe a headache for a lot of riders. brianne carter went out on the tracks to show us what was like inside the tunnel on work done between ballston and each falls church station. brianne: fastening and measuring. all part of the track overhaul underway during safetrack. >> noisy, dirty, physically. what they are doing here with the hammer there. he is doing tha

brianne: abc7 got a rare section to walk the line of the orange line track. it begins in a dark tunnel so windy at times from oncoming trains, single tracking, crews have to hold on to their hat. crews have to get to a safe space when equipment is moving through. >> up on the catwalk and walk around them. >> the work on this surge got off to a slow start. today we got a first look at the cables that delayed work tuesday. after crews discovered they were still transmitting power. the focus here safety. we had to wear vests, hard hats and safety glasses after taking a course to come out here on the tracks. long hard days for the crews. intense heat. the almost unbearable heat becomes a factor on the above ground section of tracks. today we were slowing down after an hour. rail crews are

high school. still 88 degrees there. muggy. through the day, some period of the cloudiness. when the sun was bright the temperature soared. we got late afternoon cloudiness to knock temperatures down. that is a good deal. i don't think we get that break for the next couple of days. we'll have more sunshine and higher temperatures. officially at washington today, reagan national. 95 was the high. six degrees above average. nowhere near the record high in 103. i don't think we will see the record high air temperatures the next four or five days. but the combination of the temperature and the humidity in the air will make it feel like 103 or higher over the next few days. in order to get a heat advisory we need 105 feels like temperatures or heat index for three hours or more. that could happen. but we are not quite there as i said. it feels like 100 in leesburg and feels like 98 in annapolis and washington. through the evening, it will be warm and muggy. air temperatures at 3:00 in the morning still going to be 80 degrees. the heat index or the feels-like temperates
