announcer: now, "abc 7 news at noon," on your side. jummy: a developing story out of fairfax county, where a man has died after being shot by a sheriff's deputy. that shooting took place late last night out of the nova -- outside inova fairfax hospital in falls church. less than an hour ago, we learned from authorities about the investigation. jeff goldberg is live with more on what he found out. jeff? press conference between the chief of police for fairfax county and also the sheriff

wrapping up about a half hour ago. still a lot of questions. we do not know the answers to them as the investigation continues to unfold. we did give an accounting of what authorities say happened last night. here is video of the press conference. it was about 10:00 last night that authorities say a 29-year-old hispanic male was a patient at fairfax who had been released. security guards brought into a bus stop near a parking garage, and then apparently the hospital got two calls about a man at the bus stop which would appear to -- with what appeared to be a weapon. it was actually a metal signpost with a sharp end at the end of the post. the man was having a mental episode. security from the hospital arrived, and the security guard was struck by the metal signed by this man. then a sheriff's deputy who was in the area assigned to the hospital showed

he attempted to calm the situation and deescalate the episode according to authorities, but the man with the signpost, according to authorities, kept coming at the deputy with that post. >> the deputy sheriff gave orders for the adult male to cease his activity. at the same time, the man kept on coming at the deputy sheriff while the deputy sheriff, with tactfullyawn, was trying to retreat. but unfortunately, the adult male kept coming at him with the signpost. ready to strike. jeff: authorities say that is when the deputy fired multiple shots at the man, who was then transported back into a nova hospital, where he died inside the hospital. authorities say they had video surveillance of the hoya incident, but they are not releasing it because it is evidence -- of the whole

releasing it because it is evidence, part of the investigation. the next of kin has not been identified -- the next of kin has not been notified. the deputy is an 18-year veteran of the fairfax county sheriff's office. we will certainly have updates on later editions of abc 7 news. jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. jummy: thank you for the update. this also just into the newsroom involving the case of the missing lyon sisters. been foundlch has guilty of perjury. she is the wife of richard welch, the man investigators have called a person of interest in the 1975 disappearance of chilly and katherine lyon from a shopping mall in wheaton. welch was given a two-year suspended sentence. officials in prince george's county say they have cracked down on a human trafficking operation that involved at least

prostitution ring under "pink pleasure entertainment." three people have been charged. >> in prince george's county, it is heartbreaking to us that many of our victims are very young. 19 to 21 years old seems very young to me. about talking not only young women, but in some instances about young children. the suspects are facing charges throughout the entire metro area. let's turn our attention now to the weather. thans are a lot calmer 12 hours ago when violent storms crashed into the region. first, chief meteorologist doug hill is here with the latest on the forecast. we should not be surprised to have wild, crazy storms when we have this wild, crazy stretch at heat

it is 86 degrees at national harbor. the wind direction is bringing more moisture into the air. temperatures are a little bit lower than in the past server blaze at this time, but the wind will turn more southerly. we are going to get mighty hot again, well into the 90's. that is why a heat advisory is in effect through 8:00 tonight for everybody shaded in orange across the area. 88 in leesburg. winchester and fredericksburg, 86. it high the mercury gets -- will get well into the middle to upper 90's. at the moment it feels like 102 degrees in leesburg, 100 and culpeper and fredericksburg. it feels like 96 in the nation's capital. our temperature forecast hour-by-hour with the sunshine, highs about 95 to 98 degrees across the region. we will see a chance of scattered thunderstorms after 6:00, but they will

numerous. any storms that do pop up could be quite a bit on the heavy side due to the heat and humidity. we will see if we can find cooler weather for you. jummy: thank you. back to what we were talking about. a lot of people are cleaning up the mess left behind by last night's powerful storms. heavy rain and wind knocked down plenty of trees, leaving plenty of homes without power. john gonzalez takes a closer look. john: there are still a number of utility crews out here, contractors cleaning up the mess, trying to stabilize the area. take a look at all of the tree degree on the front yards of these homes on flower avenue. take a look across the street. that house is littered with trees that fell on top of it and all around. and there is one massive tree that was snapped right in half. that caused a dangerous chain reaction here overnight. all caused by the powerful storm. treetially this massive me

poles and power lines. crews have been out here working ever since. it has been a symphony of bucket trucks, if you will. definitely not a good day to be without power. >> i got home and the power was off. the air was off. police from takoma park were here. ,hey saw the tree about to fall stopped all the traffic, and three or four minutes later, the tree just fell right on a power pow. and it went john: its branches directly struck that transformer right there. crews are grounding the area before they charge the line once again. neighborhoods , this happening literally down the street from where that building explosion occurred on the other side of penny bright

branch road last week. while the stormy weather left a message parts of our region, is nothing compared to what is going on in louisiana right now. at least nine people have died in massive flooding in that state. more than 20 inches of rain fell in and around baton rouge last weekend. the coast guard has rescued 30,000 people in the past few days. >> everything is important, but you can only save so much. you just put it up in the attic. >> we did not think it would be nothing like this. jummy: president obama has signed an emergency disaster declaration. sadly, more rain is on the way. meanwhile, the work is just beginning in silver spring after last week's deadly apartment building explosion. this morning maryland senator ben cardin was among the lawmakers who got a closer look at the damage. amy aubert is live with that. amy? amy: senator ben cardin of montgomery county

ben cardin and montgomery county executive ike leggett just wrapped up a press conference at the shelter. aficials say they had spirited, open, and transparent discussion with the residents. the biggest concern they heard today, the need for permanent housing. we are told they plan to work with the residents on an individual basis to find housing. still no word on the exact cause of the fire or any major updates in the investigation. just saying new information is expected later this week. the officials say coming out and talking to these residents was important. take a listen. >> in regards to the dislocated families, we had an excellent opportunity to talk with them and make sure they understand and that they need to come forward to let us know their circumstance. we are going to deal with each individual case as far as finding housing and dealing with that.

jummy: pepco crews are working to repair an underground transformer that burst into flames overnight in northwest d.c. the good news is, no one was hurt. however, the fire has knocked out power to dozens of customers in that area, along 18th and l streets. the power is not expected to be several hours. suzanne kennedy has the story. suzanne: hours after the underground transformer fire, pepco crews remain on the scene trying to figure out what happened overnight and how to restore power to more than 100 customers. the fi

from the sidewalk grates. d.c. fire and ems used heavy-duty phone to distinguish the blaze, which took several hours. at 4:30 a.m., a loud boom could be heard coming from a manhole. >> it seemed like an unstable situation. suzanne: office buildings through this corridor were left without electricity. some workers learned of the situation when they arrived at their offices. >> the manager said the building is unsafe to be in, so we are not allowed to come in. we basically had to figure out what we are going to do for the rest of the day, because we still have deadlines to me. we can still hopefully work at home and do the best we can. it puts a damper on the day. suzanne: and original estimate is now being called incorrect. authorities say they have no idea when this situation will be back to normal. suzanne kennedy, abc 7 news. jummy:

all the areas shaded in orange. the noontime temperatures -- 89 in chevy chase, 85 in springfield. washington at 82. 80 in college park. the wind is out of the southeast. that is affecting the temperature at reagan national. we get more of a southwesterly wind and it will or mother. you will hang with -- and it will warm up. you will hang with 97 degrees. the feels-like temperature will be higher because the dew point numbers to measure moisture are so much higher than that. there will be a chance for afternoon thunderstorms -- not as numerous as yesterday. right now only a few, north of garrett county, maryland, and southern pennsylvania. a few will bubble up, especially west of town. skies, sunshine. pop, a few showers may northwest of warrenton in ga
