the scene after the workers struck a gas line in fairfax. hazmat crews are on the scene. right now, the highway is closed in that area around monument drive. that is fairfax county government center. our big story, though, this noon is the aftermath of violent weather overnight. all around the region, people are cleaning up after storms knocked down trees and power lines. but perhaps, the worst of the damage is in the district where a rough was blown off the apartment building. now, dozens of people are looking far there is no live. our john gonzalez has the story. >> i am glad everybody got out. got out all right. >> reporter: a violent combination of thunder, rain, wind, rumbled through southeast and partially ripping the roof off of the building here in capital hill. the debris landing feet from a children's playground. >> it looked like somebody just lifted a sheet or blanket or something off of the top of the building. reporter: gar lan foster ap

that when they felt the roof ripping away. the first thing i thought, the rain going to come through the windows. reporter: the overhead shot, you can see a section where layers of material came off and the chimney cracked in seconds. >> one gust came. we didn't leave. then they took us in the cars. the police cars and everything, escorted us up. reporter: about 50 residents had to be evacuated were taken to a wreck center with temporary shelter. >> i am just trying to figure out where they are going to place me at. >> this is my medicaid and i.d. and everything. am a diabetic. they let you go in to get that sna. >> yes, i had to. reporter: the d.c. housing authority has had the police force out here all day long protecting the area keeping people away. now that the cleanup is going on, but you look at all of the debris here in the yard of the building and it is hard to believe no one was injured. well, now,
