us. d.c.'s 911 system is active in running tonight but investigation continues at this hour after a power outage took the call center down for nearly two hours. a reporter is live outside the 911 call center in southeast d.c. do we know how many calls were missed? that is one of the many questions tonight. officials tell us they are not exactly sure the number of calls that were missed but at that time, usually they get about 300 to 350. this was anlling us equipment failure and tonight, the people relying on this 911 center want to know how this failure happens. >> d.c. 911 service is experiencing a service interruption. alyssa is the text alert woke up to, letting her know d.c.'s 911 system was not working. >> that was at one point 17 a.m. >>

director says the system went down at 11:30 last night because of equipment failure. the rent --of different boxes out the power to our system. >> the building itself never lost power, but for 90 minutes, anyone with an emergency was not able to reach a dispatcher inside the call center. >> right now we don't have an accurate count of the amount of calls we missed. we do know that at this time normally we are bringing in between 350 calls. >> at first the equipment failure did not allow calls to be transferred to the back of center. official set of a 10 digit alternative number for emergency calls. we are told the 40 were received during the outage, 34 ems, five for the fire department, and 5 for police. >> we know exactly what happened,

exactly why that happened to our system. >> a hack or malicious activity has been ruled out. but the mother of three wants the city to do better. 911 atmight have to call any time, so you want to know you can depend on your citiy services. reporter: for the time being, the main call center and backup center will be up and running, except being called until clear on how this outage happened. live tonight in southeast d.c., ryan hughes, abc 7 news. isberly: it turns out d.c. not alone. a dr. 911 system in montgomery county went down for 2 hours. the system failed and an equipment overheated trade -- overheated. two people died in the county during the outage. today unified communications said the problems are not related.

now, it looks like the aftermath of a major derailment. emergency lights, people on stretchers. it was just a training drill. ac. fire and ems simulating train derailment on the yellow line about the potomac. 68 people were on board that train. tows set up makeshift triage help emergency responders practice a real-life scenario. today's drill lasted a few hours. right now in southeast d.c., repair work continues 22 hours after a water main break on minnesota avenue. today urban forest tree removed a tree and the root blocking dc's water to that break. an eight inch height broke around 8:30 last night, closing a stretch of minnesota avenue. will be complete in time for tomorrow mornings rush hour, according to an estimate.

evening temperatures, 60's and the northwest and suburbs tomorrow morning. kimberly, back to you. nation, aaround the developing story, a deadly charter bus crash in louisiana not far from new orleans. two people were killed. dozens of others were injured. the roads were simply littered with debris. state police say firefighters responded after a pickup truck speeding on a wet interstate in st. john's parish hit a guardrail. minutes later, a charter bus slammed into the scene, hitting three firefighters. 2 more vehicles and a pickup truck. one firefighter and one person in one of the other vehicles died trade investigators say the bus driver, dennis rodriguez, did not have a driver's license and was in our country illegally. the people on the bus were headed to baton rouge to help the rebuilding efforts following the devastating floods. they were all volunteers.

not in the country legally. now to the race to the white house. a pretty quiet day for both presidential candidates, with no public appearances. running mate mike pence said the republican nominee is not changing his position on immigration. in an interview this morning, pence said there would be no path to legal status or citizenship unless people leave the country first. the indiana governor refused to say if trump planned to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants or just those who commit a crime. opponents of donald trump once again protested outside the trump hotel at the old post office pavilion. protesters included faith leaders and members of lgbt, latino, and african-american groups who oppose his policies and comments about minorities, the disabled, and women.
