this morning on "world news now, it was supposed to be a fun filled night. >> what went wrong? the key word was, until trump and clinton took to the mic. both candidates drawing jeers from the crowd of a-listers at a fund-raising event. at each other. hear why things got so uncomfortable. a horrific scene at a school bus stop. bystanders jump into action to try to lift an suv off of a child. the vehicle swerved hitting the young students as they waited for the bus. it's the latest of a disturbing trend. new video of a great white caught on camera, attacking divers inside a cage that's supposed to be shark-proof. we've seen it before. why again?

new york, attending an annual charity dinner in manhattan. and clinton and trump made jokes about each other. the night that is usually known for just laughs, this year, at times, got awkward. we get the latest from karen travers. >> the al smith memorial dinner is a charity event, at which politicians are supposed to be charitable with each other. one day after trading insults in their final debate, hillary clinton and donald trump put on their smiley trump drew boos for some of his remarks at clinton's expense. >> here she is tonight, pretending not to hate catholics. >> donald looks at the statue of liberty and sees a four. maybe a five if she loses the robe and tablet and changes her hair. >> reporter: clinton and trump did shake hands. it was a sharp contrast to their

>> such a nasty woman. >> trust fund. >> i think he is unfit. and he proves it every time he talks. >> you are the one that is unfit. >> reporter: as for trump's controversial refusal to say he would accept the result of the presidential vote -- >> i will look at it at the time. i'm not looking at anything now. >> reporter: speaking at a rally in ohio, he followed up in classic trump style. >> i will totally accept the results. if i win. contest or file a legal challenge. >> reporter: hillary clinton called trump's position horrifying. >> he is denigrating. he is talking down our democracy, and i, for one, am appalled. >> reporter: less than three weeks to go until election day. and the action is back in the battleground states today. hillary clinton is in ohio. and donald trump is in north carolina and pennsylvania.

donald trump did get a few laughs at the dinner last night. with some self-deprecating jokes before turning up the heat on clinton. >> one of the best received lines was at his wife's expense. a lighthearted nod at media bias. >> michelle obama gives a speech. everyone loves it. it's fantastic. they think she's absolutely great. my wife exact same speech. and people get on her case. and i don't get it. i don't know why. and it wasn't her fault. >> and trump said, i'm in trouble when i get home. melania played along. taking it in stride. even standing and waving in the

so. >> he asked the cardinal to say a good word to get hum out of trouble. european leaders strongly condemned russia's actions in syria but stopped short of threatening sanctions. russia has agreed to a pause of air strikes, so civilians can leave and medical evacuations can begin. but european leaders are calling for a lasting cease-fire. and they're ready to consider all available options if the atrocities continue. isis fighters being f border into syria. pro-syria analysts point out that the arrival of thousands of isis militants produces new dangers for militant forces. and they're accusing western countries of using the mosul operation of influencing the war in syria. the u.s. has its first

the inflaters can rupture, spewing metal fragments. the older inflaters, the more likely they are to malfunction. and investigators are investigating the cause of an odor on a flight from atlanta. more than a dozen passengers reported feeling sick after smelling what they described as a sweet odor. health officials greeted the plane upon arrival none of the passengers requested medical attention. the nfl is reopening an investigation after washington state police released journal entries and e-mails that showed josh brown admitted to physically verbaling abusing his former wife. the nfl sus spened him for one game in august, after its initial investigation. the giants play sunday in london but brown will not be with them. one more win and chicago

into and out of a shark cage off of the coast of mexico. it turns out it's not the first or the last time at that location, or at that cage. the video shows sharks pushing their way into cages that is supposed to keep them out. the divers say it's very frigh frightening. one of the divers kept his camera rolling. at risk of losing it all. group of schoolchildren waiting for their school bus. >> as the bus stopped, an suv, plowed into them, pinning a young girl underneath the vehicle. abc's clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: the emergency call came in at 8:00. children, caught in the path of an out-of-control suv. neighbors mobilized, helping lift that 6,000-pound escalade off of a young girl.

>> nobody has more respect for women than i do. >> reporter: these are the highest levels we've seen all night. and an interesting thing is, the stress levels are an even split between supporters of both candidates. >> the nature of these two candidates have brought out a lot of emotion in people. >> reporter: 57% of voters frustrated. 55%, disgusted. and 43%, scared. >> worrying about who is going to win the election, isn't going to actually do anything. go out and vote. >> reporter: overall, self-reported stress, rising steadily throughout the evening. and there's still 19 days left for the election. >> hillary, you have no idea. >> 17. >> reporter: mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> it was fun, also, i watched a bunch of fourth graders watch the debate. and they were bickering less than many of the candidates were last night. >> did their stress levels rise, as well? >> i'm sure it did.
