this morning on "world news now," pressure is mounting on the director of the fbi. >> while james comey is getting criticism from both sides of the aisle, donald trump says the embattled director has brought back his reputation. and as hillary clinton tries to change the subject away from the e-mail probe, millions of americans prepare to head to the full story ahead. and breaking news from alabama, where a gas pipeline explosion has turned deadly. the powerful blast sent smoke and fire into the sky. and watch as this elderly driver is pulled away from her burning vehicle, as it becomes engulfed in flames. the responding officer's lapel cam, catching the moment, pulling her out just in time.

sta states millions of americans have cast their vote. >> reporter: let's get the latest from pierre thomas. >> reporter: inside the fbi, dozens of cyber experts are poring over e-mails belonging to huma abedin. the team was investigating clinton's private server, has pulled a hard drive, from ant anthony weiner, underinvestigation for a sexting scandal with an underaged girl. abedin seen in this photo, now off the trail, as the investigation intensifies. abc news has learned the fbi has made a copy of the data from the hard drive and begun separating abedin's e-mails from the hundreds of thousands that belong to weiner. the focus is on abedin's work e-mails during clinton's time of secretary of state. especially those sent to clinton's private server. they're trying to weed out

the fbi. the white house trying to stay on the sidelines. >> i'll neither defend or criticize what director comey has decided to communicate to the public about this investigation. >> reporter: but the fbi director facing a barrage of criticism from the left and right, for his decision to notify congress this close to the election. comey has maintained it would be wrong not to acknowledge the new developments. but some democrats on capitol hill are calling for comey to resign. the former attorney general, former senior justice officials, including republicans, penned a letter saying, they were astonished and perplexed by comey's actions. even long-time trump actions, criticizing the timing. >> 11 days before one of the most hotly contested presidential elections of our time, both disgraces and politicizes the fbi, and is symptomatic of all that is wrong

>> reporter: in his letter to congress friday, comey said he wanted to determine if the e-mails contained classified information. as well as to assess the importance to our investigation into the clinton server. but in a separate letter released that day to fbi colleagues, comey explained in more detail, given that we don't know the significance of this newly discovered collection of e-mails, i don't want to create a misleading impression. but that only drew more fire. >> if you tonight know, keep your mouth shut. don't speculate. >> r updates on the investigation. and i'm told if something was found, he would consider making that public. but there's just so much material to sift through, no one knows what's going to happen. we're in unchartered territory with the election just days away. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. and back to the campaign trail right now. president obama heads to ohio today to support hillary clinton. she was in that all-important battleground state monday, holding two rallies.

[ cheers ] it wasn't even in a close call. >> she says from. clinton also trying to shift the focus back on to trump, questioning if he was fit to be president. she used a line she used before, saying someone who can be baited with a tweet should not be trusted with nuclear weapons. >> trump is trying to make the most of that e-mail controversy, stressing the controversy in two appearances. trump said clinton would plunge the country into what he called a constitutional crisis. he predicted clinton's legal

anytime soon, while questioning if she should hold office. >> hillary clinton is unfit and unqualified to be the president of the united states. and she's likely to be under investigation for criminality for a very, very long time to come. >> meanwhile, some republicans questioned why trump spent time in michigan, which hasn't gone for a gop candidate since 1988. today, he will be in pennsylvania and wisconsin, also there's this side note. a shooting in the parking lot of the clinton presidential library in arkansas. police in little rock says the shooting was the result of a robbery attempt. some people had met in the parking lot to sell some blue jeans. one person was hit in the leg and is expected to survive. breaking news from alabama, where one person has been killed and several injured in a gas pipeline explosion. the country's biggest gas pipeline is shut down for the sec time in two months. and residents in the area have been forced to evacuation.

thick smoke there in the area. this explosion happened not far from the site of a september incident, where a pine burst, leaking thousands of gallons of gal lean and leading to shortages across the south. five people are being treated at local hospitals. no word on their conditions. the battle to retake mosul has reached that city itself. iraqi special forces have pushed up to the eastern outskirts of the city, taking in the last village before the city boundary. there's som artillery, tanks and machine guns and isis positions on the eastern edge of the city. and are just five miles from the city center. mosul is the last stronghold of isis in iraq. state television says there's clash within the city between isis and residents living there. there's no confirmation of that. for the first time, we are hearing some of the 911 calls made by the pulse nightclub shooter as that siege was under way.

when weiner's sexting scandal broke, abedin decided to stand by her man, as her boss did years earlier. abedin showed up on this video, when he announced his candidacy for new york city mayor. >> nobody will work harder than anthony. >> reporter: the showtime documentary, "weiner" chronicles his attempt at comeback. his wife often by his side. >> you don't know anything. >> i would say, you normal campaign candidate's wife. i think you're doing an amazing job. it's great to be out here. >> reporter: a second sexting scandal broke. this time, weiner used the name carlos danger. >> these things that i did were wrong. and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through many challenges in our marriage. >> reporter: abedin, again, decided to stay. >> i loved him. i have forgiven him. i believe in him. and as we have said from the

forward. >> reporter: but the final straw came this past august, when weiner was caught sexting again. this time, a photo of him lying in bed next to their son. abedin announced she was leaving him. the fbi announced they are investigating him and whether he was sexting a 15-year-old girl. that investigation now links weiner to clinton, something in the laptop weiner may have shared with abedin, sparked the e-mail server. >> it's strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election. >> reporter: in this dailymail.com photo, huma is seen leaving campaign headquarters. now, facing the possibility that the text that torpedoed her marriage, can claim clinton's presidential dreams as collateral damage. >> we'll find out what impact it has one week from today.
