we showed you anti-trump protests last night in d.c. really across the country. they were popping up instan tainously. we saw demonstrations in chicago, oakland, seattle, new york. many other major cities. there has been protests today. stephen tschida continues the team coverage from the white house with the latest. stephen: important meeting between president-elect donald trump and sitting president obama took place and the demonstrators came here because they wanted to express the grief, the disappointment and fear over the jam count of the presidential election. there were demonstration here and demonstrations near the trump hotel and on capitol hill.

in downtown washington. kevin lewis kef is there now. set the scene for us today. kevin: the trump hotel is well certified and fortified this afternoon. i can tell you that members of the u.s. secret service, d.c. police, private security guard. even the national park service mounted horse unit is on scene. quite ironically the authorities are using the metal fences here to assemble a wall of sorts around the international hotel. and this is primarily why. a steady flow of protesters over the last 24 hours. we arrived around 1:30 today as a group of 150 georgetown day school students. most too young to even vote. chanted anti-trump rhetoric outside. the students told me administrators at the prestigious private school allowed them to ditch class in the pursuit of the first amendment rights.

at the trump hotel coupled with the loud large and persistent protests hurt business. every hotel guest i spoke with today told me the negative energy was easy to tune out. don't forget these are folks paying a minimum of $484 a night to stay here. that is not even including taxes and fees. i interviewed a federal employee who works near the hotel and he had this take on trump's ability to profit amidst protests. >> i think people will consider it a badge of honor to register as a guest here in spite of this. kevin: you feel the negative press may be a good thing for the hotel? >> look what has happened to trump so far. anything they throw at him, what does it do to his ratings? it doesn't matter if it's good

the heavy protest and the police presence here. this is the main entrance for vehicles to the hotel. so far there is a lot of speculation to where donald trump is. we are not sure if he is staying here tonight or heading elsewhere. we are live in northwest. i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. clearly it's not all protest. there is plenty of support. half the country voted for donald trump. this was the scene yesterday just outside the building in new york. it got crazy. at first it started with people chanting and maryland bureau chief brad bell is in chester, maryland, this is a part of the world in maryland that is trump country. a lot of folks there are happy. brad: a lot of people are very happy. you know what? at this time of year on the eastern shore the water and the sky are as blue as can be. but jonathan, you are right. if you look at an election map, it is red. very much trump country.

to hillary clinton's 70,000 votes. if you talk to people here today, they say they are not in the mood to hear from protesters. this is trump country. as the bumper sticker says, some call the eastern shore the right side of maryland. donald trump soundly beat hillary clinton here. and today most we speak to are happy with the results of the election. >> because they really have been doing a number on us. been able to step up and have a voice. >> i want to see the corruption go away. i really believe he can do it. >> a waterman just off his work boat explains it this way. >> he is there for the working man. >> to ask about the protests at the white house. the trump hotel and elsewhere. and most here are quick to dismiss the message. >> it's totally unwarranted. they just don't respect the democratic process. >> their opinion don't matter.

as you said, the new republican on the d.c. state board of education is 33-year-old ashley carter. she says her family is from d.c. she was reared on the eastern shore. she is back in the city. at age 33, tried her hand at elective office and defeated long-time incumbent member mary lord for the at-large school board post. she became the second republican on the nonpartisan school board. she said she was surprised she won but worked hard, knocking herself in all eight wards of d.c. it's paid off. >> i am a republican. however, this is a nonpartisan election. i really want to make sure that we are raising and improving our graduation rate here in the city. this is the lowest in the country. i want to work hard to make sure that the schools are better for our students in the city.
