4:03 pm
as far as i'm concerned it could have gone a lot longer. we discussed a lot of situations. some wonderful and some difficulties. i look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including counsel. he explained some of the difficulties, some of the high-flying aspects and some of the really great things that have been achieved. so mr. president, it was a great honor being with y you many, many more times timesn the future. president obama: thank you, everybody. we are not going to be taking any questions. thank you, guys. thank you. c'mon, guys. michelle: president obama's first piece of advice to president-elect trump. don't take questions when they start yelling in the oval office. ads he will probably remember -- alison: he will

civility between the two. president trump said he will lean on and need he from obama. they have 4,000 jobs to fill for the trump team. hopefully they will work nice together. alison: these are two people with a lot of jabs back and forth over the years, personal and public. to see they come together is hopeful for the people. michelle: for sure. this was their first meeting. interesting. jonathan: in an hour and a half, too. went for an hou michelle: check this out now. show you a picture. november to 1, 2008. eight years ago to the date. the moment then president-elect barack obama met with president george w. bush. yesterday president obama spoke about how the bush team helped him move in the white house. the pledge that he has to do the same for trump. we put together a photo gallery of the moment.
4:05 pm
we showed you anti-trump protests last night in d.c. really across the country. they were popping up instan tainously. we saw demonstrations in chicago, oakland, seattle, new york. many other major cities. there has been protests today. stephen tschida continues the team coverage from the white house with the latest. stephen: important meeting between president-elect donald trump and sitting president obama took place and the demonstrators came here because they wanted to express the grief, the disappointment and fear over the jam count of the presidential election. there were demonstration here and demonstrations near the trump hotel and on capitol hill.
4:06 pm
feeling on this day. listen up. >> i have been motivated by the protests and the marching in new york, san francisco, where masses of people have come out. what is being said as far as the bad lapping wage, and not -- the bad language and not accepting president-elect trump i don't agree with. steves president barack obama and president-elect trump expressing a show of unity here at the white house. not necessarily the case on the streets of the nation's capital. after donald trump left capitol hill, we went into a coffee shop. there was a line, supporters of trump, opponents of trump. it quickly erupted into a shouting match. that is the latest. stephen tschida, abc7 news. michelle: across the country, security at properties bearing
4:07 pm
in downtown washington. kevin lewis kef is there now. set the scene for us today. kevin: the trump hotel is well certified and fortified this afternoon. i can tell you that members of the u.s. secret service, d.c. police, private security guard. even the national park service mounted horse unit is on scene. quite ironically the authorities are using the metal fences here to assemble a wall of sorts around the international hotel. and this is primarily why. a steady flow of protesters over the last 24 hours. we arrived around 1:30 today as a group of 150 georgetown day school students. most too young to even vote. chanted anti-trump rhetoric outside. the students told me administrators at the prestigious private school allowed them to ditch class in the pursuit of the first amendment rights.
4:08 pm
at the trump hotel coupled with the loud large and persistent protests hurt business. every hotel guest i spoke with today told me the negative energy was easy to tune out. don't forget these are folks paying a minimum of $484 a night to stay here. that is not even including taxes and fees. i interviewed a federal employee who works near the hotel and he had this take on trump's ability to profit amidst protests. >> i think people will consider it a badge of honor to register as a guest here in spite of this. kevin: you feel the negative press may be a good thing for the hotel? >> look what has happened to trump so far. anything they throw at him, what does it do to his ratings? it doesn't matter if it's good
4:09 pm
the heavy protest and the police presence here. this is the main entrance for vehicles to the hotel. so far there is a lot of speculation to where donald trump is. we are not sure if he is staying here tonight or heading elsewhere. we are live in northwest. i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. clearly it's not all protest. there is plenty of support. half the country voted for donald trump. this was the scene yesterday just outside the building in new york. it got crazy. at first it started with people chanting and maryland bureau chief brad bell is in chester, maryland, this is a part of the world in maryland that is trump country. a lot of folks there are happy. brad: a lot of people are very happy. you know what? at this time of year on the eastern shore the water and the sky are as blue as can be. but jonathan, you are right. if you look at an election map, it is red. very much trump country.
4:10 pm
to hillary clinton's 70,000 votes. if you talk to people here today, they say they are not in the mood to hear from protesters. this is trump country. as the bumper sticker says, some call the eastern shore the right side of maryland. donald trump soundly beat hillary clinton here. and today most we speak to are happy with the results of the election. >> because they really have been doing a number on us. been able to step up and have a voice. >> i want to see the corruption go away. i really believe he can do it. >> a waterman just off his work boat explains it this way. >> he is there for the working man. >> to ask about the protests at the white house. the trump hotel and elsewhere. and most here are quick to dismiss the message. >> it's totally unwarranted. they just don't respect the democratic process. >> their opinion don't matter.
4:11 pm
president no matter what now. brad: when we come back at 5:00, we will delve more deeply into why donald trump is so popular over here. you are also going to hear very harsh words from trump supporters for those protesters. in chester, brad bell, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. alison: okay. it happens, of course, every four or eight years depending but meeting at the white house today was quite a moment. michelle: it is that peaceful transition of p country together that makes it so interesting. especially this time because of the campaign season has been so nasty. jonathan: nasty, divisive and people is one way or the other. there is to middle ground. for the first time it is playing out on social media. big-time. lindsey mastis is in the newsroom with the perspective for us. lindsey: i'm focusing on congress. a lot of people are coming out an congratulating donald trump.
4:12 pm
congratulating trump on an impressive win to become the next president. we also have a picture that representative john rat-cliff of teg put up of him and donald trump as well. a lot of people in congress look forward to what they want to have happen. we have senator roy blount from missouri saying he is looking forward to working with president-elect trump to repeal obamacare, rein in regulation and strengthen the nation at home and abroad chris murphy out of connecticut saying gut punch last night but congratulations to real donald trump. if he really wants to work across the aisle i am ready. here is hoping. of course, james eleanor holmes norton saying there is no time to cry in the soup. let's make soup. i won't prejudge him on d.c. but i insist he not prejudge d.c. back to you. alison: thank you very much. we continue our coverage ahead
4:13 pm
meets with house speaker paul ryan and gets a tour of the capitol. trump will work with republican majority in both houses of congress. that is still ahead. jonathan: next up at 4:00, a great reason not to give your child a cell phone. alison: a courthouse take-down. this is not about partisan politics but something much different. doug: sunshine and chilly temperatures. better get used to the combination. it looks like that is the story for a while. we will lay out the next seven da jonathan: and santa claus arrives at the mall which raises this question. okay, it's two days after the election. we are two weeks before thanksgiving. too soon? michelle: that is the abc7 instapoll question today. head to wjla.com/votenow to weigh in. we'll check in on the tally

michelle: a lot of excitement for the mayor of miami shores on election day. this had nothing to do with voting. alice burch was robbed at gunpoint. she decided to chase after them and she was shoved to the ground. >> it was dangerous but he was a young person and he didn't expect to be chased. if i had not chased after i would not be able to get the jonathan: christmas is already popping up where every you look. alison: it's not even thanksgiving yet. we want to hear with you. do you agree with that? go to wjla.com/votenow and let us know if you think it's too early to celebrate christmas. michelle: here is one sign.
4:18 pm
it's santa flight academy. it opens tomorrow. yes. two weeks before thanksgiving. jonathan: he's still in florida. it's not the season yet. michelle: there is this. the holiday tradition is back. coffee giant starbuck holiday cup. starbucks brought back christmas images after going with a simple red design last year. that drew criticism from some people who said the chain was part of a so-called christmas. jonathan: they said they were too p.c. alison: pretty designs. jonathan: we can all breathe easy again. alison: thank goodness. now that we got you caught up on christmas news in november, george washington guard mei-lyn bautista is coming off a successful freshman campaign as she was named to the atlantic 10 all-rookie team. but her source of motivation is unique. erin hawksworth introduces us
4:19 pm
>> my younger brother is what motivates me on and off the court. erin: g.w. guard mei-lyn bautista is a stud on the basketball court. but many people don't know her 13-year-old brother jason is her inspiration. >> he is the one that makes me, you know? i'm going to get better today. if it was my last game i'd want to do everything for him. erin: delayed which means his motor skills are behind for his age. >> he can't walk, he can't talk, he can't run. but he is learning sign language. erin: even though he lives in new york it doesn't stop them from communicating. >> do you miss him? >> every day. he ran me face time through the ipad. he knows how to do that. erin: mei-lyn and her brother are very close and she hopes to help others with disabilities one day. >> i want to make it somewhere

people like my brother. for people who have a family member who has a disability i feel like you should be positive about it. look at it on the bright side and motivate you to he that person and do as much as you can. >> congratulations. you are this week's team player. michelle: wow! it's so nice to see someone that young thinking about of themselves. jonathan: yeah. michelle: the great relationship between brother and sister. sometimes it each other. jonathan: you see the passion on the court. don't get in her way. let's get a look at the traffic situation. jamie sullivan keeping an eye on things. it's easy to do because it's moving so slow. jamie: it's slow in a lot of areas. i want to focus in first in the district. third street tunnel very heavy as you head northbound as well as southbound. outbound southeast/southwest freeway approaching the bridge we average 14 miles per hour. the big picture is not bad at
4:21 pm
park. but we have the heavy traffic in the northwest corner. as you do approach 50, though, near route 202. take a look. the sun glare. this is something we do have this afternoon. yesterday we didn't have much of it. the northwest corner averaging 7 miles per hour. a look near old georgetown and you can see the volume on the inner loop. wrapping around. live look at georgetown shows you we are still heavy toward 355 connecticut a and getting into silver spring. back to you. alison: okay. you are going to love this one. look who it is. our very own stormwatch7 meteorologist brian van de graaff participating in what they are calling the real election. here is what it is. apple pie versus pumpkin pie. make your pick. jonathan: you have to go for both. alison: that is at farragut square. it's for the slice of life pie sale to help fund meals for the critically ill in the
