announcer: from abc7 news, this is a breaking news alert. jonathan: right now at 4:00, the civics test taken to the streets. michelle: d.c. high school students walk out. alison: right now g.w. students are protesting. we have team coverage for you. jeff goldberg with the university students. michelle: stephen tschida and q mccray were with the high school kids. jona jeff goldberg and breaking news. protesting that is happening right now. where are you? who are they? jeff: well, jonathan, these are hundreds of g.w. students. this protest started at cogan plaza in the center of g.w. at about 3:30. the march came down pennsylvania avenue. here we are. right in front of the white house. hundreds of g.w. students chanting as they made the walk from pennsylvania avenue, the chants ranging from "no hate, no fear, everyone is welcome

and "we reject the president-elect." the mood is anti-donald trump. but the march is peaceful the entire way through. speakers talking right now. i'm joined by chloe. why are you? what are you protesting? >> i'm protesting everything trump stood for in the election and disenfranchise the minority students, lgbtq students and everyone in this country who believes in what the country stands president-elect and will be the president. do you think there is a way students like yourself can come to accept him and try to work together with supporters of his to move forward? >> this man is our president and it will be our president. it's unfortunate fact. we are not here today because he is not our president, it's because he is. we protest everything he stood for in the campaign and we want to make the voices heard and this is something he hears and he knows coming into the campaign, into the white house.

we will stand here every day. when he is doing something and he is going against the communities, we'll be here every singlal day he will say he will do stuff in them campaign. jeff: thank you. one of the many g.w. students out here in front of the white house protesting the election of donald trump. obviously his point of view on many subjects. we will keep watching and bring you updates on abc7 news as it develops. back to you. alison: okay,jev. thank you for that. stephen tschida continues our team coverage today. he school protests that we are seeing today. stephen: throngs of high school students descended on the trump hotel today and denounced donald trump. some of them not too clear, not too specific with the rationale or the reasons but very loud. they continued down pennsylvania avenue to demonstrate in front of the u.s. capitol and ended up in front of the u.s. supreme

and filled the streets of the nation's capital. the students assembled en masse in front of the trump hotel. so many of them, they blocked pennsylvania avenue. most of them not old enough to vote. some unable to clearly say why they are protesting. other than in the most vague of terms. >> we really don't like donald trump. stephen: 18-year-old matt floyd did cast a ballot the election. he wants a peaceful transfer of power but also wants to inform the incoming president of where he and the others stand. >> we have to respond to the rhetoric in some way. we cannot have a country where hate-filled rhetoric is socially acceptable. it's ridiculous. stephen: now i spoke with one of the high school organizers of today's demonstration. she said she really urged in the social media a peaceful demonstration.

some bottle-throwing at the hotel. it doesn't appear to be much damage to that and climbing on the statues. there were fights at by the capitol and theft of property. it wasn't as peaceful as they hoped but nowhere near as violent as some of the demonstrations we have seen in other cities across the country. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you. the instapoll over the past few days. do you think the students protesting donald trump are right or looking for opportunity to ditch class? michelle: overwhelming the viewers said it's a way to get out of class. alison: that is why we sent q mccray to the protest to find out how strong the convictions really are. here is what he found. q: students made it clear who they were demonstrating against. donald trump and his election win. >> we don't really want trump as the president. >> we are here to protest. q: do they know why they were

you are against? >> i'm mostly against how like -- i don't know if this is true or not but the woman's rights. >> we don't really know. q: we spoke to 16 students on and off camera. more than half didn't know the issues. >> i just don't like him and i want a better country. >> maybe half, or more are here for the wrong reasons. they just want -- this is an excuse to get out of class. q: but then there were students like these. what p >> i'm against all the just big tri, the racism -- bigotry, the racism, the tone he uses and how he expects everyone he insulted to get behind him. >> he says abortion and he is trying to punish people for having abortion. he don't know what women go through. he don't know what we go through. q: the students marched from trump hotel to the capitol. many of them didn't know all the issues involving the issue in the election, one thing is

solidarity. northwest, i'm q mccray, abc7. michelle: keep a close eye on the bottom of screen. since we started the newscast it's switching more in favor of the students protesting. we'll keep an eye on that. now to the trump transition. key members of the team all joining the president-elect in trump tower. abc7's maggie ruley with how donald trump's first major are drawing criticism from many. reporter: president-elect donald trump continues the transition to president receiving the first presidential briefing today in trump tower. from now on trump and mike pence will get the same daily updates as president obama. >> he will be a great president. reporter: trump's teams rallying around him. there is speculation that secretary of state will go to former new york city mayor rudy giuliani or former unambassador john bolton.

abc news learned the former g.o.p. presidential candidate has taken himself out of the running. but there is one appointee who has been confirmed by trump polarizing politicians on the hill. steve bannon. recently the editor of breitbart, conservative news outlet considered to be a voice for white nationalists. democrats in congress are signing a letter to the president-elect urging him to rescind his appointment of bannon. >> welcome to the dawn of a new unified republican republicans will be working closely with the trump administration, are taking a balanced it approach when it comes to talking bannon. >> this is a person who helped him win an incredible victory and campaign. reporter: the divisive election is dominating president obama's final overseas tour. he calms international concerns when asked but also throws a subtle jab. president obama: those folks

than they were when i came in office. reporter: the current president decides what the president-elect should receiver. president obama decided trump should receive the full presidential daily briefing. that is what president bush did for him eight years ago. abc7 news. jonathan: in congressional matters house republicans have nominated paul ryan to keep the leadership role as speaker of the house. democrats are asking the minority leader nancy pelosi to delay thursday's vote on the leadership positns now. the debate is should she keep her role? some are considering a run at the top democratic party position in the house. it is a project that was three years and $60 million in the making. but today it's finally complete and it is gorgeous. the capitol dome was reopened this morning after the lengthy restoration project. the structure was once covered in scaffolding. remember that? the repairs were done. well, this morning the architect of the capitol gave

kidnapped and are demanding a ransom in exchange for the safe return. brad: in each of the cases money is demanded to be sent to a puerto rican bank, all with information readily available online. we will do a demonstration. i have chosen a neighborhood at random. i have a computer set up and see how long it takes to find out personal information about someone living one of the houses. i'm starting a stopwatch right now. all i need is internet access and starting with address. searching government, private and social media. none requires a fee. in two minutes and 43 seconds i have names of everybody living the home, several phone numbers and facebook page and i have enough to do the scam. the police say that should be a sobering fact. >> make sure you are careful

breaking news keeping an eye on out of oklahoma city. the man shot at will rogers airport has died. according to the abc affiliate the victim was found injured at the ticket counter and shot in the parking lot. walked up to the ticket counter and said he had been shot. the airport shut down. no passenger flights coming or going and no word of a potential suspect in the case. you are looking at video from earlier when we saw s.w.a.t. teams going where every layer of the parking garage going car to shooter in this -- searching for the shooter in this case. passengers inside the airport were told to shelter in place. they the not have the shooter in this case. and the person who was shot has died. stay with abc7 for updates and new information as soon as we get it in the newsroom. michelle: looking at the weather now. gorgeous day out there. there is all this talk about a warm-up. steve: there is. it will start tomorrow and you will feel it on 30 and friday. it will feel great.

hands. >> abc7 at 5:00. on your side. alison: right now at 5:00, the students from the george washington university are heading back to campus after protesting outside the white house. jeff goldberg was with the group as they marched and he joins us live from foggy bottom with a look at what is happening now. jeff? jeff: well, what you are seeing now some lapping wage we certainly can't show on television -- language we this is a protest. the end of the protest in terms of the march that went from here to g.w. to the white house. they came back after walking on pennsylvania avenue. this is a peaceful protest. we have a list of speakers coming through, one after the other expressing disagreement, strong disagreement on trump on a number of issues. immigration, race, abortion. many issues. they have issued a list of the demands they have for the george washington university.

what are the demands that you have for the university now? >> there are several demands. it comes from a small group of the student organizations. who decided that these were the priorities. that this is an image and a new image of our country. and the campus we want to create. jeff: i'll ask you one more question. a lot of disagreement with donald trump but he is the president. he did win. do you accept the results? how do you go toward knowing he will be the president? believes in. >> we accept the results, we don't expect his pollty. we don't expect his racism or bigotry. we are staying here until he changes that. until he agrees that he is not going to deny climate change. jeff: thank you for your time. we appreciate it. the protest is wrapping up here at g.w. the speakers coming in one after another. this is coming up there. they accept results of the
