including undocumented immigrants. this after a series of disturbing incidents, including swastikas in a bethesda school bathroom and a banner with graffiti in silver spring. >> apparently, some people think they are authorized now to say things and do things they would have thought twice about doing just a few weeks ago. alison: the latest data shows that minority now makes up -- minorities now make up one third of montgomery county. jonathan: a west virginia mayor is out of a job after showing support for a racist comment about the first lady. the comment referred to michelle obama as "an ape in heels." she has been removed from her post. the mayor has resigned.

outside of the white house tonight in protest. but this is not against president-elect trump. instead, the crowd, including senator bernie sanders, speaking out against a controversial pipeline. tom roussey reports. tom: this was one of many protests going on across the country, the same day the company wanting to finish the dakota access pipeline help in federal court and seven days after the election. >> it takes on new urgency. tom: president-elect trump is for the pipeline, which supporters say is a safer way to transport oil and would make u.s. less dependent on foreign oil. >> hopefully donald trump would listen to the people. tom: the big issue is whether the pipeline builder ken lay pipe under a missouri river reservoir in north dakota.

fighting back against crime with a warning about a terrifying phone call. some of the is calling people in prince george's county claiming to have kidnapped a loved one. they even use the persons name. at least a dozen people i been targeted. the caller demands a ransom. they often call multiple family members at the same time. the police say that you can protect yourself by limiting how much criminals can learn about you from what you put on social media. >> make sure that you are media. whatever you put on social media is always available, even if deleted. jonathan: in each case, the caller demands that money be sent to a puerto rican bank. be aware of those phone calls and if you get one contact the police immediately. alison: death and dying, something we don't like to talk about, but today d.c. took a step forward to allow what is being called death with dignity. the council agreed on a bill

a doctor. jay korff reports. >> i've had a wonderful life. i still do. jay: former journalist and professional photographer mary klein hopes to lead a long life, but she has terminal ovarian cancer. >> i don't know how long i have left to live. jay: she has endured radical chemotherapy and treatment so radical her body is now breaking down. a death with dignity bill. if approved, klein said she would consider getting the medication needed to end her life. >> when i have just a few months more left to live, i would like the option of a peaceful death. jay: the d.c. council says safeguards are in place to prevent problems.

sophomore, who was taken down by a school officer following the attack. the five victims are recovering with conditions ranging from fair to critical. the motive at this point is a big question. southwest airlines employee shot to death in the parking lot of an airport in oklahoma city. the suspected gunman was found dead in his truck after shooting himself. it happened at the will rogers airport. the police are not saying if other. alison: right now, a sweeping new ban on burning in parts of seven states. we've been telling you about raging wildfires going on for more than a week. there are now air quality concerns in atlanta, charlotte and several cities. authorities believe that several fires were set intentionally. two people today were arrested for arson. jonathan: chances are you will get one for christmas or honda

alison: billions of dollars are spent on gift cards every year. odds are that you will receive one over the holidays. but billions of these gift cards are stolen. horace holmes introduces us to an arlington woman believes money was swiped off the gift card before it was even in her hands. prevent it from happening to you. horace: she had no idea when she and her family purchased $4400 for kitchen appliances. she was caught in the middle of a battle. with best buy, the company where they purchased the appliances. >> the products are great. we ordered them from best buy because they had a special

$400 best buy gift card. horace: within days she received this gift card in the mail. perfect. she would use the money to buy other items in the kitchen. the problem is what you went to best buy to redeem the car -- >> there was $10 on the card. horace: she called best buy to find out what happened and gave the company the account number on the card. the representative told her the card was used at one of its stores in columbus, georgia, 750 miles card she received was in transit with the u.s. postal service to her house. she was told the card was used again at the same georgia store a few days later to buy dvd's. when she reported this to best buy -- >> they said the card was little with $400, sorry, it's the same as cash. horace: this is a detective with the metropolitan police
