this morning on "world news now," los angeles is on alert. >> security has been stepped up overnight in the nation's second largest city after the fbi and local officials determined there was a threat against the transit system. we'll have details just ahead. also breaking overnight, a shooting causes a panic at a christmas parade. families enjoying the start of the holiday season when gun shots a local broadcast capturing those moments. and fighting down under, the strange incident involving a kangaroo, a dog, and a human. we'll show you how this one ends. probably not how you expect. ? ? >> and sorry, nickelback, that's the message from a police department who threatened to punish drunk drivers with having to listen to the canadian melodic rock group. see why they're now apologizing.

? ? it's hard to say it ? from abc news, this is "world news now." >> we gt a nickelback fan over here. i don't even know who they are. >> how have you never heard of them? >> i've heard of them. i think i know that song. but you know the whole catalog. >> and it's going to be stuck in your head and you're hear it over and over as the day goes on. i'm diane macedo, and we're starting off with a threat in california. forcing authorities to step security in transit stations in los angeles. >> the call came from an anonymous male caller ore seas who was not making the threat, but reporting it. the fact that the caller sounded intelligent, giving specific information regarding location and timing, that prompted them to go public.

something. you are the eyes and ears of law enforcement. public safety is my profession, but it's everybody's business. >> the fbi says the threat specified the city's universal red line city station. but the los angeles mayor said he's confident in law enforcement's response and he says he plans to ride the red line today as a show of support. breaking news out of sanford, north carolina, where multiple gun shots cut short the town's christmas parade last night. >> palace say that at least two people were hospitalized and in serious condition. another with a non-life-threatening injury. witnesses on the scene report hearing as many as eight gun shots, but elsewhere along the parade route, the announcers of the event were unaware of the violence that was unfolding. >> they've got all kinds of internet, web design, wireless phones, tv. >> there's been a shooting. >> oh, really? >> security systems.

maybe shut down the parade. >> oh, really? >> yeah. several people are going home. >> well, we didn't get a santa claus. >> yeah, i know and we may not. ngets police say both shootings were related and not random. one suspect is in custody and the investigation continues. a night of remembrance as thousands honor the victims of friday's massive warehouse fire. mourners held candles hours after the death toll rose to 36. investigators don't believe any mo b they can't be sure until the search efforts are complete. meantime, it's possible the tragedy could turn into a murder case. prosecutors are still determining whether any crimes were committed. the cause of the fire is still under investigation, however the building was an illegal residence. a number of the victims and those unaccounted for are students or recent grads from university of california at

members of the cal berkeley community are among the dead. prosecutors in south carolina are vowing on retry a former police officer in the shooting of an unarmed man. the jury could not reach a decision and the judge declared a mistrial. steve osunsami has more on the emotional day in court. >> the court therefore must declare a mistrial in ifthis ca. >> reporter: this disturbing video video -- he will remain under house arrest. >> until my family can see justice, no, there's no forgiveness. >> reporter: for the family of walter scott and for black americans who thought that video of the killing would bring justice, they feel the system has failed them again. they're already looking forward to a retrial promised by prosecutors. >> it's not over. y'all hear me? it's not over!

jurors, both of them white women, were in tears as the black foreman delivered the news. >> the statistics say that the next jury will look a lot like you. >> reporter: most of the nearly all white jury looked like they were in disbelief, but there was one who refused to make eye contact with the judge, the jury, or the family of walter scott. >> something got to him. i'm sure we'll quickly hear from the rest of the juror disagreed with him. >> a handful of people who came to watch, stormed out of the courtroom in disgust. to show many, the crime was clear. slager fired eight shots. when he fired his first bullet, scott was already 18 feet away. on the witness stand, he explained that he and scott fought before they were scene in the recording. he says at one point, scott got a hold of his taser and says in his mind at the time, scott was a threat. >> you fire until the threat was

>> reporter: jurors could have picked between manslaughter and murder and couldn't agree on either. prosecutors in this case say they'll work with the federal work, but they plan to retry this case. as far as protests, there weren't violent protests here when walter scott was killed. and the skol family is begging the streets for that same patience. steve osunsami, abc news, charleston. turning now to the raging attempt to bring even a temporary halt to the violence in the country's hardest hit city. russia and china have blocked a draft resolution inside the u.n. security council that would have demanded a seven-day truce in aleppo. it would have allowed for the evaluation of the sick and the wounded and a clear path for much needed food and medicine. president-elect donald trump is expected to announce more cabinet picks this week, after offering a key position to ben carson. trump named his former rival to

he's passionate about strengthening communities, but democrats are slamming the retired neurosurgeon as unqualified for the job. and the president-elect sat down with former vice president al gore to discuss climate change. you might remember trump had called climate change a hoax and pledged to roll back certainly environmental regulations, but after the election, he said he would keep an open mind. gore said they had a product discussion, describing it as a sincere search for common ground. >> the bulk of the time was trump. i found it an extremely interesting conversation and to be continued. and i'm just going to leave it at that. thank you. >> he was scheduled to meet only with trump's daughter, who reportedly wants to make climate change one of her signature issues. the standing rock sioux chairman is calling for volunteers to leave.
