"live desk." michelle marsh, back to you. jonathan: all right. thanks very much. right now at sky over national har -- skyla over national harbor -- skytrak7 is over national harbor. this is the headlights and it looks like normal traffic. the casino there, the big building in the middle is drawing a lot of attention. you can see brake lights on the right side of the casino. keep in mind the police officers are out there trying to keep the traffic moving. last night different case. it was at capacity by 11:18. 48 minutes after it opened. maryland bureau chief brad bell was there for all of this. they hit capacity again three hours ago. so now they are issuing a warning. wow, are they popular! brad: yeah. you know what? sometimes you can be smothered with love. that is what is going on here. between last night when they opened and nooning today, -- and noon today, 50 ,000

at m.g.m. national harbor. at noon is when the casino reached the capacity. so people could get in the resort but they couldn't get in the casino. so now, m.g.m. an hour ago issued an extraordinary bit of advice. after all the advertising to get people to come, they are now saying stay away this weekend unless you have hotel and restaurant reservations. don't come this weekend. they are worried that people will have a bad experience. take a look. right now the traffic is not too bad. you may be able to get in. but the problem is when things get too crowded it can get heated. that happened last night with a fight on the casino floor that really has gotten social media attention. according to sources the brief fight happened on the casino floor when a man's behavior toward women offended others. m.g.m. security broke it up. >> the spokesman said the victim who suffered minor injuries declined to press charges.

seconds. security did their job. evening was fine. brad: traffic and parking and big crowds were far greater issues at the m.g.m. national harbor last night. with a v.i.p. party crowding the complex and the garages, many of those trying to get in for the official opening at 11:00 had to be turned away because they were too early and then the resort reached maximum capacity. >> that is how it is when you open up something and advertise it to several million people. brad: today through the day the traffic moved smoothly until 2:00 p.m. when the casino reached again the maximum capacity. the unified command center the police reacted ordering entrances to the parking garages blocked, spreading the word to change plans and stay away for a while. m.g.m. spokesman says while frustrating for patrons, such glitches are to be expected. >> there has been so much anticipation built up for the project we will see significant traffic in the coming days and wee

moved back in the area. jonathan: in fact, i was noticing brad bell wearing gloves. he is hearty. if he is wearing gloves you know it's cold. stormwatch7's chief meteorologist doug hill with a check of the weather. when will it start to warm up perhaps? doug: that is a relative term. sunday it warms up that much. then the warmest day we have of the next ten is monday when we hit the mid-50's for one day. let's talk about the conditions now around the area. it's mostly clear outside. temperatures are 36 degrees at reagan normal airport. the feels like temperature is at 28 degrees. other feels like temperatures around the area as of 5:00, it feels like 25 in baltimore. 21 in hagerstown and winchester. it feels like 30 in fredericksburg. 24 at joint base andrews. the hour-by-hour through the overnight, we will see the numbers continue to drop. air temperatures generally by morning in the viewing area is in the middle 20's. with the winds continuing out of the west/northwest 10 to 15 mi

the wind chills tonight and tomorrow will be in the teens and the 20's and will probably remain in the 20's all day long. sunshine tomorrow but a cold, up to the low 40's on the day sunday. we have a couple more pushes of cold air coming. two more big cold fronts next week. we will highlight that in the ten-day forecast in ten minutes. alison: the clock is ticking. literally. the government is trying to avoid a shutdown. the house overwhelmingly approved a spending bill on thursday. but the sticking point seems to be in the senate. tim barber takes a look at the issues on the hill. >> we need to hope and wish and pray they don't shut down. tim: allen burns remembers how the last federal shutdown grinded business to a halt. >> it hurt my pocket, my boss' pocket. tim: they are steps from the capitol where another shutdown is looming.

driver, behind the wheel of the blue b.m.w. sports car will now spend the next 12 years in prison. >> this was a bullet. a missile going down the street. kevin: prosecutors say the 21-year-old had already compiled a troubling traffic record of crashes, speeding tickets and a citation for spinning tires. >> is he remorseful? yes. do i think there is self-pity mixed in? absolutely. kevin: today sobbing at sentencing, atakoglu told the judge -- a female judge who spent a decade in traffic court said in response -- >> this was a very, very difficult sentence tense. kevin: atakoglu's defense attorney blamed the crash in part on the client not taking

medication. his family seen here distraught. >> a lot of crying and hand-holding. last thing i heard was his mother scream as he was taken away that she loved him. kevin: well the state of maryland is now spending $300,000 on improvements to river road. that includes flashing lights to the top metal poles that alert drivers to people waiting to turn left for the deadly crash occurred. live in bethesda, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. alison: today, jurors in charleston, south carolina, saw video of dylann roof entering the church before he started shooting. they also heard roof's confession. in it roof says he planned to kill himself after the shootings but changed his mind when police didn't arrive right away. roof's defense team conceded his guilt in the murders of the nine parishioners but say

that is the combination of the air temperature and wind gusting. tonight is mostly clear. the air temperatures in the city will drop slowly and steadily. 30 degrees downtown. 20's elsewhere. the key vol, the wind chills because of the winds out of the west/northwest will remain in the teens and the 20's. overnight and in the morning. get up to date on the lake effect snow. there is no storm center to deal with. it's not a winter storm. it's the annual lake effect snows. the snow driven by the low level and the mid-level winds from the southwest pushed them to southeast pennsylvania and a few to new jersey. the winds as they change direction the area of the snow ban will change. here if you are looking for a flake, you have to wait a while. your don't wait for the cold air. it will continue tonight. sat late and radar shows most of the low level cloudiness

and west from the mountains and north closer to the lake. our area is nice and clear. but very cold as well. late tonight, the skies will be clear. we get through the day tomorrow. the future cast shows plenty of sunshine through the day with the clouds remaining in the higher terrain to the mountains. saturday afternoon and night it's clear but sunday the clouds return as the winds goes south. i will cost possibilities of the snowshowers in the west through sunday morning. for the balance of the day we see mostly cloudy skies. the temperatures will get in the lower 40's. that is it. on sunday night the moisture will show up with the winds out of the south. that will lead to a warmer but a rainy monday around the area. here is the weekend outlook. tomorrow, plenty of sunshine. breezy. cold. 39. wind chills in the 20's most of the day. sunday increasing cloudiness. highs to 42. the christmas parade is saturday at 6:00 p.m. in

we used to joke about it in the past when people say what do you think about on the launch pad? how do you think you would feel if you knew you were on the top of 2 billion parts built by the lowest bidder on a government contract? alison: that is john glenn joking about being one of the pioneers of the american space program. we spoke about what glenn's legacy should be. >> he was a legend known for the brave willingness to be the first american to orbit the earth as well as the work as a statesman. john glenn was a marine, astronaut, a senator and a family man. his 19622 journey gave hope one day the u.s. would put a man on the moon. >> it was important to fly

orbital mention which he did. it was more important to have someone that americans could identify. someone like me. reporter: current nasa administrator looked up to john glenn as a mentor and a friend. he said he was a quiet hero whose every man persona made him relatable. >> people could identify with him. being from ohio and middle america he was the guy around the corner. reporter: glenn was awarded the space medal of honor and guest of honor at a new york ticker tape parade. he entered world of politics and he represented his home state of ohio for a quarter century. bolden says glenns legacy should be as an ordinary american citizen who did extraordinary things. >> senator glenn always was down on the ground with all of us. he never allowed himself to seem to be

in the case of the woman accused of killing her twin sister. today, alexandria duval agreed to be moved to a different place for a trial. she traveled to new york after an earlier indictment was dismissed. investigators now are trying to determine what caused the fire at a marina on the james river near richmond this morning. that fire did destroy a dozen boats. some of the boats burned while they were tied to the dock. others floated downstream. some people who live on the boats had to run for safety. no one was injured. arson has not been ruled out. alison: this is a real mystery baffling government officials and really angering historians. the wrecks of several ships sunk during world war ii have just disappointed.

american, britain and dutch ships killing thousands of soldiers. they visited the site it and they found four of the wrecks were no longer there. just gone. one american ship, uss houston was there but the scavengers had stripped pieces of it. many people think the wrecks should be left undisturbed to honor those who never made it off the ships. >> to do things such as we are talking about, would be equiver lent for someone to go into arlington national cemetery -- equivalent for someone to go into arlington national cemetery with extra kateing equipment and start -- excavating equipment and and start to dig up coffins and graves. alison: it is possible that the scavengers broke up entire ships to sell scrap metal worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. jonathan: coming up, 7 salutes the woman behind the push to

reminders that freedom isn't free. every year one group brings togethers thousands of volunteers to thank those who given lives for their freedom. leslie is with the group "wreaths across america." the retired army captain knows about sacrifice. >> two weeks before the end of the deployment, i developed a blood clot in my left leg. i thought i had just pulled a muscle. jonathan: it wasn't. serving a as peacekeeper in bosnia she had been exposed to a toxin and the reaction was costly. >> having lost my leg and most of my vision to chemical agent or toxin serving in-country i had a bigger mission i wasn't aware of. >> her vision is to serve those who have given all. by working with the group to bring together 70,000 volunteers and hundred of semis loaded with wreaths to make sure every lost service member is honored

consumer alert. lisa: with the money up for grabs, the cyber scammers are more devious than ever. creating apps that could fool the savvy shopper. there are a dizzying 4 million apps, many of which for retail sales. making holiday shopping from the couch even easier. perhaps you download the coach app. then dillard's, just fab, maybe big lots to get a heads up on deals. but there is a problem. none of the stores have an app. major retailers and the customers have being duped by the criminals impersonating the store and stealing your money. >> there were hundreds of fake apps at the app store overnight. right before the holiday. >> he discovered the fraudsters impersonating the re tailers. >> they are creating fake app to allow them to shop, provide credit card information,

location information. imitate iing it so a consumer -- imitating it so the consumer don't know the difference. lisa: that is until your credit card is charged and nothing arrives. they are making an attempt to control the fake apps but they are falling short. >> as soon as they are reported the fake apps are taken down and the others come up. it's a giant game of whackamole. lisa: how do you know? some of the apps are for the companies and stores that don't have an app, like coach? >> a quick step consumers can make to make sure they are downloading the retailer's app. go to the browser, to the site and click the link to send you to the app store and download the app. lisa: if there is no link there is probably no legit app. there are a number of tips to spot a fake app. go to wjla.com. lisa fletcher, abc7 news. jonathan: there is a war going on over the nation's water. because right now bottled water is poised to ous

leotta was killed. one week after he was hit by a drunk driver. as amy aubert shows us, this week, family members paid their respects to the fallen officer at the national law enforcement officer's memorial. amy: pencil to paper. the name of officer noah leotta beginning to peer through. >> i want his name not only to be etched here but etched in everybody's heart and mind. amy: for richard leotta, officer noah leottas father, it is hard to imagine a year has gone by. >> tomorrow is the anniversary of when he passed away. i saw noh take his last breath. it's the worst memory i have. i wouldn't wish it on anybody else. amy: the 24-year-old police officer struck and killed last december. his uncle visiting the memorial a day over. >> you never get
