announcer: now "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. jonathan: right now at 4:00, another mess that metro had to clean up. michelle: brand new 7000 series cars separate mid-commute. alison: check it out as the passengers were offloaded from both halfs of the train and then they walked back along the red line tracks this morning. that was the scene just outside the twinbrook station in rockville. michelle: with all of this happening, it opens up safety questions over the newest rail cars joining the fleet. jonathan: montgomery county reporter kevin lewis is outside the station with more of the passenger video and also an explanation from metro. what did they say? kevin: they are still investigating right now, keeping tight-lipped on a number of questions we have. this happened around 9:00. eight-car train heading to shady

here when the front two cars snapped off the trailing six. around 40 passengers had to be taken off the 7000 series train. thankfully, no one was injured. one woman recorded this video as metro employees escorted her down the rocky rail bed. her trek about the length of a football field. metro has not said if it cut power to the third rail before evacuating passengers. it also isn't sure just how fast the train was going when the cars dislodged. red line trains single tracked for an hour as crews worked to fix things. we did check our archives and we found this isn't the first time something to this effect has happened. in january, a green line train disconnected near the navy yard ballpark station. metro customers contend this is merely the latest black eye for the mass transit agency.

chase. a man slot and killed in 32nd street northwest. today his mother said whoever did this is an animal. stephen tschida has the investigation. stephen: the bullet-riddledded car outside his home. someone shot and killed the 21-year-old, opening fire inside the vehicle. >> it's a waste of life. he was only 21. stephen: today his parents say they know of no one who would want to hurt their son. >> i texted that at 10:00 there will be ice, rain. so make it before 10:00 or stay where you are. stephen: through her tears of grief, phyllis expressed hope for the swift arrest of whoever is responsible. >> it's a pack of dogs that have no value for life.

u.s. attorney general loretta lynch the featured speaker today at the event which focused on unity and peace. this was at the adam center in sterling. they claim to be the second biggest mosque in the united states. quoting f.b.i. statistics lynch staying in 2015 hate crimes nationwide were up 6% from 2014. but hate crimes against muslim americans increased 67%, the sharpest increase after 9/11. joining lynch on stage, leaders that were talking about the need for understanding and tolerance. >> when one of us is threatened we all have to speak out. regardless of the discomfort on us. >> we stand together as americans as diversity and background to combat hate crimes. jeff: you heard from loretta lynch and the spokesman of the

alison: google signed a new deal with the cuba state-run telecommunication company and it will speed up the internet service for cubans using youtube and other google products. it will only affect a small percentage of cubans. a vast majority of the communist country 11 million residents don't have access to the internet. jonathan: the competition to starbucks got everybody on the edge of their seat. peet's coffee is coming to the commonwealth of virginia in a big way. they are opening 175,000 square foot roasting facility in suffolk. they chose virginia over five other mitt atlantic states. there -- mid-atlantic states. there will be 105 new jobs. they will roast the beans to ship up and down the east coast. they will spend $58 million to get the plant up and running. yum! time to check on traffic. jamie sullivan is with us with the details. not a lot of red but there is a spot there. jamie: we are seeing what we typically don't see is a solid black line. that means a closure is in

tractor-trailer accident. this is route 7 westbound completely closed. all lanes blocked with a fatal accident before yellow schoolhouse road. with all lanes blocked we are seeing volume in the area. we have skytrak7 heading to the scene now. look outside. this is traveling near 7 locks road, volume on the inner loop, the outer loop and even a little sun glare out there now. you can see here near river road as you get further north, volume in both directions. our big picture look mainly just going to be in the northwest corner on the beltway. heavy heading outbound 395. the freeway is congested, too. southbound on d.c. 295 we have volume as well. right now the stretch from the 11th street bridge continuing south. it will take you about 20 minutes. the average is about 17 miles per hour. that is a look at traffic. we'll keep you updated on the accident. michelle: people are starting off with snow and cold

nasty winter storm dumped up to 11 inches of snow in detroit, leaving the driver to a slow and a messy morning commute. winter conditions sent plane skidding off an icy runway at the detroit metropolitan airport. no one was injured. the conditions should improve now that the storm is moving away. a new blast of arctic air is expected midweek. jonathan: as we start to see winter weather coming to play, slow down when you are out there driving. watch this video clearly. look at the truck. the pickup truck is not that the driver is out of control but the road is made of ice. you don't have any traction. this dash cam came from minds. a minnesota trooper car on the side of the road as people are passing by. it's all ice. the car, truck you saw there almost hit the trooper. a sweet from the sheriff says ice -- tweet from the sheriff says icy conditions play a factor with people on the roads. they encourage people to slow down. michelle: it looks like

in the courthouse through a private underground garage. taken up -- it's not uncommon for high profile people -- through back passage ways, in the courtroom. no one would have seen her unless they stumbled across courtroom 3f at 9:00 a.m. this morning. mrs. trump says her character has been defamed and she has filed a lawsuit. it's moving ahead. all they were going to do today was talk about scheduling. when the lawyers would have to meet certain deadlines, this sort of thing. typically, plaintiffs and defendants, in this case the defendant did not come, don't appear in court. but mrs. trump lawyer's did issue a statement saying, " >> player: trump was not required to attend but chose to do so to meet the judge, meet opposing counsel and show her commitment to the case." we have looked at the public record. we can tell you the next hearing is going to be january 27.

living deplorable condition. it set the tone for 2016. >> many animals where it's not just two or three animals coming to us in a case. it was 20 to 30 animals coming to us. >> between september and november alone 110 cats and dogs were brought in. surge of cruelty cases now putting a strain on the shelter. >> you get to a point when you so many animals in your care that you are potentially compromising the welfare of animals and staff. ryan: to give you an idea how crowded it is, the community room where the classes are held have turned into the overflow room with cages of cats stopped on top of each other. officials are also having a hard time adopting out small animals so they are hosting a holiday s.o.s. adoption drive. this upcoming saturday and sunday the adoption fees are waved to help the guys find new homes. >> we have so many animals that would love to be the new addition to the family and home for the holidays.

michelle: former u.s. representative aaron shock of illinois will be arraigned any minute now on federal corruption charges. the 35-year-old republican is accused of using government and campaign money to subsidize a lavish lifestyle. he is also accused of pocketing thousands of constituents' dollars. he resigned in march of 2015. a large crowd gathered outside pulse nightclub marking the six month since the massacre. family members, friends and survivors stood outside the shuttered nightclub and held a moment of silence at 2:02 a.m., the exact time the massacre began. back in june, a gunman omar mateen committed the worst mass shooting in recent history. a verdict is in for the death of a former new orleans saints player. jurors handed down a guilty verdict late last night. the tria
