breaking news in maryland. just after 9 o-clock last night-- police responded to a fatal accident that shut down walker mill road in both directions. police tell us that a car crashed into a pole, killing the driver. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. we are following a developing story in fairfax county ... where the chief of police is recovering after n an apparent drunk driving crash. chief edwin roessler was hit as

traffic light in centreville just before nine o-clock. the other driver is now charged with driving while intoxicated. chief roessler was not seriously hurt. he was treated and released from the hospital. a new law in montgomery county is designed to keep renters safe. the new law requires annual inspections of properties with multiple code violations. it's been in the works for a while. but -- there is added urgency after a gas explosion killed seven people at an apartment complex in silver spring earlier this year. residents of flower branch apartments are suing kay management and washington gas. the law also requires landlords to give renters utility bills... 90-days notice of rent increases... and offer a two-year lease at each lease renewal. right now. repair crews are on the ground in north dakota this morning after an oil pipeline

170-thousand gallons of crude oil. the leak happened about a 150 miles away from where hundreds of people are protesting plans to build a similar pipeline across tribal land. investigators say this week's spill was discovered by the landowner after the crude had already spread miles away from the rupture. the company that owns the pipeline is investigating why remote monitors did not discover the leak sooner. well if you don't believe in "sewer monsters" then this video may change your mind. a florida man says he heard low growl near a storm drain so he got on the ground to take a look. and he got one heck of a surprise. the man says a huge alligator was staring right at him. he recorded this video.. before running back home. utility workers later told him that sewer alligators are not uncommon. so if you ever accidentally drop something down the storm drain-- do not try to reach in and grab it. it's xx and we're just getting started.
