where you are and when the winter weather arrives. chief meteorologist doug hill has the timeline of the winter alert. doug: most will arrive at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. a freezing rain advisory in effect from midnight to 9s . a.m. the area in pink are a part of southern virginia. and north is d.c., metro and well beyond pennsylvania and new jersey. widespread winter weather advisory. mostly all freezing rain to the south. some sleet mixed with the freezing rain to the north. it runs until 9:00 a.m. to the south. noon to the north. the outlook is the clouds that will lower and thicken. the good news is look at the temperature trend. overnight, the temperatures are rising in the metro area. there will be the window through the early morning where the sleet and the freezing rain will be a real concern. as a result the driving conditions can be treacherous in the spots through the early morning and the mid-morning until it changes over. i could impact the travel. not from the local ice situation but

saint paul, detroit, cleveland. they will have heavy snow and sleet. it could impact the traffic. call ahead. it will improve rapidly in the afternoon as the rain will come to an ends. maureen? >> thank you, doug. jonathan: the timing of the wintry weather and the rain that will follow could not be coming at a worst time. this weekend, traditionally one of the busiest shopping weekend of the year. brianne carter spent her day talking to the road crews. they have been busy to get the roads up. but a lot of people are using the roads to get home. >> they are. many of them will see the brine they will put down. you can see that it is looking fine now but if you give it 12 hours tomorrow, about this time and we'll be see a different situation. the state highway administration in maryland w

to treat the roads. it's a similar situation in virginia. they will have 1,100 crews tonight starting out along the roads. the main roads and the secondary roads as well. they are laying the brine in d.c. if brine instead of the salt. the hard rock salt won't work with the cold temperatures we have had. d.c. will deploy crews at midnight. the biggest concern is the ice. >> our biggest concern is ice. we don't want slick roads tomorrow. we don't want the folks out shopping, the last minute shopping to deal with the slippery roads. we will be treating all night. >> this is what we see for the parking lot at the

outlet. this is the situation all day long. they are trying to get ahead of the weather to find the ice slathered across the sparking spaces. the outlets open up at 8:00. but some say they are heading home and it will be lunchtime before they get the last minute gifts. reporting live, abc7 news. maureen: the frigid temperatures are taking a toll on cars. today alone triple-a says it got double the usual number of the calls to jumpstart dead batteries. the other car commodity in demand is air for tires that lost pressure because of the cold temperatures. jon well, impending weather could make for dicey conditions tomorrow.

jonathan: a rage fire and billowing smoke in the san francisco bay this morning. it broke out in a jump warning and prompted anyone nearby to stay inside and close the windows and turn the a.c. or the heater. it's the a.c. in california. it's been knocked down but there is no word on a cause. maureen: a 19-year-old woman is charged with setting fire to her own home overnight. it destroyed the home on the sea island port in spencerville. three other people inside the building at the time escaped unharmed. firefighters face additional challenges from the weather. water freezing. jonathan: another fire. rough start to the morning commute for metro riders after a fire broke out underneath a rail car. that happened 7:30. 50 passengers were evacuated from the cars. metro is blaming a brake issue for the fire. maureen: federal railroad

plan to upgrade passenger rail service in the northeast corridor. the goal is to eliminate the bottlenecks that cause delays. the plan calls for shoring up the infrastructure, running more trains and building new tracks to allow the trains to travel faster. the upgrade will cost $120 billion over 30 years. jonathan: "7 on your side" with a crime alert from the fairfax county. take a look at this. this is surveillance video showing a guy robbing a sub awe sandwich shop in the alexandria section of fairfax county. you can see the guy jumps over the counter to confront the clerk before emptying the register. if you know anything about this, anything about the guy that looks familiar, the fairfax police would like to hear from you. maureen: an unusual scene caught on video. behind the rattling and the shaking christmas tree is a deer trying tose cape after it wandered wandered in a frederick county home. we spoke to the teenager who shot the video. what he thinks brought th

christmas. brad: ryan manchester just got home from high school when it happened. >> i heard the loudest banging noise on my front door. >> so he started to roll video of an eight-point buck. a deer in the house. >> the deer was freaking out behind my christmas tree. >> he calls 911. he is told animal control will take 15 minutes to arrive. in the meantime, his family's house is getting trashedded. >> i could hear it down here banging all over the place. >> he calls his dad and gets permission to unlock the pistol father and son use at the range. >> it came and stood next to the table here. and looked at me. i was pointing the gun at it. it kind of gave me the deer in headlights look. brad: he fired twice. the buck went down. the police arrived and said the teenager did the right thing. the deer probably came from the woods in the neighborhood. what it was thinking that day, it's too late

maps. the pinkish color indicates an area through virginia and southern maryland under freezing rain advisory from midnight until 9:00 a.m. the area lightly and the colorfully shaded in periwinkle to the north of the metro area is a winter weather advisory. in effect at the same time. midnight to 9s . a.m. tomorrow. we think we will deal with the light amount of sleet. a little of that. freezing rain for a while. overnight through 9:00 in the morning because temperatures will hold steady overnight and slowly rise. once we get up to 33, we are good to go. it will be rain. keep an eye on the map and the numbers. 8:00 in the morning, the purplish area shows where we are likely to freezing rain. temperatures are starting to come up above freezing in many locations. then almost everybody south is above freezing but hanging on to the ice potential to the north. that is why the northern and the western zones have advisory in effect from noon until 1:00. we could see clearing in the afternoon. the temperatures will change as we head in the 50's. that is good

tomorrow night. even after nightfall. snowfall, maybe tenth of an inch locally. maybe a half inch north and west. the majority is freezing rain. as far as the ice accumulation, we are looking for over tenth of an inch in baltimore. the same in washington. .2 in annapolis. andrews is more than that. not a huge accumulation of ice. but enough with the temperatures cold it could glaze place, especially the untreated roadways, sidewalk and the parking lot. it would be self-limiting for a short time in the morning until the warmer winds blow in and raise the temperature. we hit the lower 50's between noon and 4:00 and then fall off. maybe as i said sunshine late in the afternoon. sunday a cold front is coming in. we have showers in the morning. showers in the afternoon. some could be heavy as a strong cold front comes in. we could hit 60, 362 in spots before the -- 60, 362 in spots before the front goes through. it will drop to 62 at
