jonathan: we are following two major breaking news i vents. several people killed when a truck plows through a christmas market in berlin, germany. alison: hours after a russian ambassador in turkey because assassinated. it was caught on camera. lindsey mastis following the breaking news from the abc7 satellite center. lindsey: a truck rammed in a huge crowd of people in a christmas market. at least nine people are dead and 50 people are injured. german police call it a terrorist attack and they have apprehended the driver. to turkey, the ambassador to the russian ambassador to turkey was assassinated as he spoke in ankara. we are not showing the moments he was gun gunned doing. but the gunman

opened fire and he spoke in turkish and arabic. the police killed the shooter in a 15-minute gun battle. that shooter has been identified as member of the anchor ra riot -- ankara riot police squad. back to you. jonathan: joining us on the phone, chief political correspondent it scott thuman in moscow now. scott, how is this news being received there by the russians? scott: well, jonathan, i was actually in the living room of a member, foreign member of the foreign ministry here when this broke. he was shot. before we knew that ambassador karlov was dead. now that that is out, it is wall-to-wall coverage here as you can imagine in moscow. russia is saying is this a foreignist ac

not win, we will fight it decisively. you heard from vladimir putin who has called this provocation designed to interrupt the syrian peace process. why does it all matter? why is it happening? the relationship between turkey and russia has been strained but recently bridged. last year turkey shot down a russian fighter jet that strayed in the air space from syria. that put a lot of tension between the nations. president erdely tried to -- president erderan called putin to explain the latest. they are trying to figure out what they need to do. but this complicates the syrianition in so many ways. they have upset many of the

aggression in response to bombings perhaps. alison: i want to ask you because you can give us perspective on breaking news out of berlin. this time last year you were at a market similar to this right there in berlin. if you could describe what it is like for people watching at home. alison: i was down the street from the christmas market, i was at another one a year ago covering terror-related stories in berlin, germany. an unfortunate coincidence that this is another location. these markets are kind of different than what we are used to in the united states. we don't see them in a large format where the masses gather and they walk around the vendors at the outdoor event. people enjoy this fes five time of year -- festive time of year. it's a celebrated

the united states state department issued a warning for travelers going to europe specifically saying that holiday vents, festivals and the markets could be a target. this is in line by the magazines by isis says use cars and knives. they are more readily accessible than guns. remember in east france and then weeks ago at ohio state university with that suspect using the car to ram the students and get out with a knife. this appears to be another incident of the nature. so not only in moscow are they talking about what happened with the ambassador in turkey, but also there is chatter about what is going on in berlin. all of these major national capitals are having to lock down or be prepared for another attack. jonathan: sc

unclear at this point. abc7 is staying on the story. whether he have an update as soon as soon new comes in the newsroom. jonathan: "7 on your side" now with a health alert. pediatric intensive care units are full. alison: in fact, a child was turned away from the multiple hospitals over the weekend. the reason is r.s.v. a virus that spreads really fast. jonathan: more children get this when they are young. it's treatable. but it can be very dangerous and contagious. alison: richard reeve is live with a health alert. this is a scramble to find treatment for the infants and the toddlers. richard: yeah, that is right. friday night a doctor frantically trying to find i.c.u. for his parents. but step back a little bit to tell you what happened. this r.s.v. infection as we have been saying is an issue every year but a real headache for a lot of hospitals around here. they just don't have the i.c.u. bed for the young patients. now the facility where we ar

pediatric e.r. at vens healthcare, shady grove medical center. they have 18 e.r. beds here. they don't come to the level of an i.c.u. friday night, the doctor we mentioned, had a young r.s.v. patient who he felt needed intensive care. he called children's hospital. he called inova fairfax and georgetown university. all he said were fill up as of friday night. this is no laughing matter for some of the patients. it affects the respiratory system. you said of the patients under 2 years old. for most there is no problems but in a few cases it can lead to pneumonia and serious situations. finally the doctor found a place at john hopkins university hospital in baltimore and he would like to see more resources in cases like this. >> you have o

alison: abc7 continues to follow the breaking news coming today from berlin, germany. a truck crowded through a crowd -- a truck plowed through a crowded christmas market in berlin. at least nine people are dead and others are injured. police believe this was an attack. it's recommend -- recommend -- reminiscent of bastille day in nice.

a lot of folks are getting out there. it opens in minutes. jamie: just about 11 minutes the gates will open. we will start out with a live look at the beltway. this is the opposite side from where fedex field is. both directions there is volume building in. happy to report no crashes right now. but 10 miles per hour is your average on the inner loop in the northwest corner. in d.c., not bad. heavy traffic on the freeway. a little on kenilworth avenue. bottom of the beltway, outer loop to alexandria. the inner loop is not bad at all but the outer loop slows again approaching branch avenue. focus in here on 242. 41 miles per hour is the average. we mentioned at 4:30 they will open up the gates. the kickoff tonight at 8:30. you can expect the congestion this avenue. so we are talking about traffic. steve rudin is talking food, weather. he gets to be there in the fun of it all. steve?

jonathan: they are trying to figure out what started the blaze. this is the district yacht club. it happened overnight. sam sweeney has the latest on the developing story. sam: good afternoon. mayor muriel bowser said she was devastated by the overnight news of the fire at the district yacht club. investigators from the a.t.f. are on the scene trying to figure out what started this fire, destroying the historic yacht club. flames burst fro

three buildings on the property. this afternoon there is little left to salvage. officials calling it a complete loss. firefighters were stalled by a lack of water access and the low water pressure. eventually fire boats arrived. members rushed and were simply shocked after hearing the news this morning. >> earlier today we hosted a christmas party for the kids. that is everything. the clubhouse, the bar and the workshop where we have all of our tools and the expensive equipment we use. we service our own boats. steve: the club has been in existence for 60 years. sam: it will be a long road ahead. they still can't say how it started.

"great christmas light fight" finale, you have to set your d.v.r. it will be on at 1:30 a.m. right here on abc7. well, turning to other news now. this weekend, a fuel tanker skidded off 95 in baltimore highway and exploded. it triggered a deadly 55- vehicle pime-up. -- pile-up. our transportation reporter brianne carter tells us why it could take months to complete an investigation. brianne: it could be weeks or months before the investigation in this fiery tanker crash is complete. the crash that claimed two lives happened saturday morning in the treacherous icy conditions along interstate 95 in baltimore. >> the amount of the pure accidents and metal entangled on the interstate was substantial. brianne: nearly two dozen people were injured in a crash that involved more than 60 cars after the tanker fell from the i

jonathan: abc7 continues to follow breaking news from berlin, germany. lifer pictures from the left of the screen. that was until a few hours ago a busy, crowded, outdoor market where people were doing christmas shopping and what have you. when the big truck right there you see in the picture plowed into the crowd. we know nine people have been killed. more than 30 or 40 others have been injured as a result of this. this is reminiscent of the bastille day attack in nice, july 14 where dozens of people were killed ove

situation under control. the driver has been taken into custody. there may have been a passenger that may have been killed by police. there is information unfolding but the police are quick to say this was an attack. we have an update at 5:00. alison: now another terrible story. this developing in little rock. desperate manhunt for the driver who shot and killed a 3-year-old boy. in an apparent road rage attack. it happened over the weekend. a grand mother taking the children shopping when they came to a stop sign. the driver behind them honked the horn because she was driving slowly. she honked back. the driver behind them shot in the car and hit her 3-year-old grandson. >> this is the second time in less than a month that an infant child has been shot while traveling in a vehicle in our

that is frustrating to the police station and the community. alison: the 3-year-old only noticed he had been shot when they got to a parking lot. he died at the hospital. they believe the killer wisconsin driving 2003 black heavy impala. jonathan: judgment day for an aspiring christian raper that lost his temper and ran down his music producer. the september 2015 fight left william mcdaniel dead outside of his clarksburg home. montgomery county reporter kevin lewis explains why mcdaniel's family is so upset. >> he took my grandson. he was supposed to become a police officer. kevin: standing in court, guilty of breaking a key commandment, christian rapper ryan "ry money" salandy claimed stress and anxiety plowed him to plow down his -- anxiety caused him to plow down his music producer. >> not once did he apologize to the family. >> mcd
