rich. >> it goes to show you never know from day today. something routine can turn into something horrible. michelle: hogan is now out of surgery and is expected to recover. jonathan: luckily the officer survived but a report released today shows the number of the law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty this year is the highest in five years. many of the killings took place as ambushes. amy aubert dug in the report today and she joins us now with the details. amy: more than 130 officers died in the line of duty in 2016 alone. it's something the national law enforcement officer memorial fun calls alarming and sad. passerbys reading the name and honoring the fallen. >> i didn't realize how excessive it was. heart-breaking. >> 135 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2016. the highest number for five years. that is according to preliminary data from the

kevin: last month the pitbulls had to be rescued from a home. >> the dogs came in. they weren't able to keep themselves clean. >> animal cruelty investigator jack breckenridge says the officers entered the two-story property to find 11 dogs covered in fee -- feces. some were in crates. others were roaming free. they discovered a dead dog buried in a shallow graver that was killed from a recent dog fight. >> dog in their own waste and feces on the walls. kevin: they have charged calvin dubs iii with 11 counts of animal cruelty. do you live in the home? yesterday his father also charged in the case drove away from the news camera and later returned to tell us he and his son are innocent. >> are you
