residents worried about an uptick in crime in northwest washington. shooting since saturday have the neighborhood on edge. nobody was hurt but a car was damaged in what the police believe was a road rage incident. jonathan: more than a month after a woman was brutally attacked by a man with a knife, the police say they arrested the man seen in the surveillance video. until now all they had was the video. good police work tracked him down. tom roussey is live from northwest washington with how they caught them. this was really good work on the part of the detectives. tom: they used something a lot of us have in our wallets. it was not a drivers license or credit card. the police say this is o mendoza.d ernest on the saturday night after thanksgiving, a female victim in this case was working at the grand hyatt washington hotel on h street.

when a man came in she thought was staying there. >> he pulled out a knife, pushed her against the bed, and demanded her to take off her clothing. tom: she fought back and he heard her badly, even ripping her hair out before he fled. the police found the surveillance video. by working with metro transit police, they found out something else. >> he had been using a specific metro transit card. to been tracking that card over the last 30 days and monday they hit pay dirt. >> they tracked him to landover. tom: the police arrested him and now had a name to go with the video. did they have the right man? >> through the video evidence and working with our survivor, we were able to tell the person we had on video was are suspect. mendoza is charged with assault with intent

surgery at shock trauma in baltimore and is expected to recover. a report released today by the law enforcement national fund has troubling findings about the number of officers killed in the line of duty this year, many of them assassinated or ambushed. in all 135 people of lost their lives, the highest in the past five years. each of those lives are memorials at the national law enforcement memorial in northwest washington. at half: flags flying staff in maryland today, governor larry hogan ordering that in honor of a soldier who died after injury sustained in afghanistan. sergeant first class allen browne of takoma park was injured in an ied blast. he died at walter reed medical center. jonathan: the story will make you smile -- a video seen nearly a million times online. a man is singing outside of the gallery place metro station.

new york city police say they are prepared to secure the new year's eve celebration in times square. today's preparations included a practice confetti drop, but it was all business for the police department. they deploy dozens of sanitation trucks as roadblocks to stop vehicle attacks like we saw in germany and france. the police do not have credible threats but took recent events into their planning. >> this will be a very well protected event, with multiple layers of security. detaile: the security will include 7000 police officers walking the streets and perched on rooftops, as well a
