nearby prince george's county. we informed prince george's authorities. they are checking to see if what was discovered here is related to the thefts in prince george's county. stephen tschida, abc seven news. anchor: thank you. in virginia, the search is on for the person or people who stole puppies out of a local pet store. our northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg joining us and manassas with the latest on the dog napping did.they have any video or surveillance ? reporter: that still remains to be seen. police are actively investigating the burglary. last night, they were in the room dusting for fingerprints, looking for information.it is believed that yesterday between 1:00 and 5:00, someone, or people, came through the window and stole six puppy dogs from the store that sells dogs for breeders. the owners still cannot believe it.

roger and shania are all smiles with the three puppies still for sale at d.c. pups. but when talking about the six puppies taken >> -- i was devastated. i was hysterical. >> i was in shock. reporter: they are engaged, and have only owned the store for a few months. they got here at 6:00 to check on the puppies before a 7:00 appointment. the they walked inside, puppies, a pomeranian, maltese, and others, just 9-12 weeks old, were gone from the cages, along with six travel cases. the back window of the shop a few hundred feet from city hall, was broken. the security cam out front has been pulled from the wall. >> that kind of person is concerning. reporter: the couple immediately called manassas police, while in disbelief someone would steal the dogs. >> it breaks my heart. i don't think there are any --

--ay, charlotte them bread charlotte's friends were back in class. deathre coping with the of a friend. i cannot even imagine. reporter: is really hard for these young people. many of them have not experienced anything like this before. there are some big mysteries last night. police say they know who the suspect is, they know who -- his identity, but they have not released it publicly. also not said why. the kids have many questions. leon was one of many who wore all black to school today in honor of fellow howard high student charlotte zaremba. the school system spokesman says it was expected to be a tough day in class. >> we want to be sensitive to the grief they might be feeling. we want to provide support. everything we have seen on social media, she

and had friends. we want to respect that, while we try to figure out what occurred. reporter: the sophomore was murdered in her elegant city bedroom yesterday, just two hours into the new year. police say the 16-year-old's mother heard a scuffle in her daughter's bedroom, went to check, and was shot and wounded by a 15-year-old boy, who then turned the boy on charlotte and himself. charlotte died a short time later. her mother, suzanne, was treated and released. the suspect is in critical condition. here at the scene, flowers have been left. a neighbor told us that nobody is now at the house. the family wants its privacy. at dismissal at howard high, students said they just don't understand how something like this could happen. >> people were either indifferent, or very sad. just seeing the way it is affecting my friends, and the fact that she was a child that was killed, was pretty hard. reporter:

again, the big mystery tonight, why did this happen? what was the motive? we have been in touch with howard county police all day. they have not updated the story. if anything does come in, we will have that when we come back at 6:00. at howard high school, brad bell, abc seven. jonathan: very sad. thank you. in prince george's county, police are searching for the driver who hit a man in upper marlboro. arounde 34 -- roof for 10:30. they believe he was crossing the street, and he had a medical emergency, and passed out. witnesses say the driver did not even stop. it is unclear whether he died before he was even hit by the car. police do not have a good description of the vehicle. alison: we are keeping a close eye on the developing story out of turkey, where investigators say they have fingerprints and a description of the person who attacked the nightclub on new year's eve.

this is the man they are looking for. michelle marsh is at the live desk with the latest. michelle: the islamic state claimed responsibility for that attack this morning. eight people are already in custody and being questioned. theey's prime minister says country is monitoring hundreds of social media accounts for any clues about where the person behind the attack could be. 39 people were killed when a man with a gun started shooting inside the club, shortly after midnight. in therom delaware was club when the shooting started. >> i was with nine people. seven of us were shot. thinks thee says he only reason he survived is that he pretended to be dead, after he was shot. the state department says he is the only u.s. citizen injured in that attack. the islamic state is also claiming responsibility for haymarket bombing in baghdad. that attack -- 48

market bombing in baghdad. that attack killed 39 people. abc seven.rsh, alison: for children are dead after a bad mix of pesticide and water. fire officials in texas say someone in the house sprayed pesticide underneath the home. then, that person try to wash it away with water, unknowingly creating a toxic tests -- gas. 10 people were in the home when firefighters arrived, and four children were dead. a fifth person is in critical condition. >> there was a fumigate they were using. there was aluminum phosphide. when mixed with water, it creates a gas which is highly poisonous. alison: investigators believe people in the home they have been breathing the toxic gas for up to two days. no one is expected to be charged.

parts of the country, maryland's opioid had -- epidemic seems to be getting worse. newly released data shows nearly 1500 overdoses in the state. that is nearly double the 2015.s from of the 24 counties in maryland, only three saw a drop in heroin overdoses from the year before. enforcement says users sometimes think they are buying heroin, but they are buying more potent fentanyl. alison: coming up, cold turkey. how one local town is clamping down on all kinds of smoking. jonathan: a little later. >> no computer is safe. i don't care what they say. reading between the lines, as the president-elect refers to claims that russia hacked the election results. alison: bringing in the new year with newborns. why one sibling will always have an edge on the other in the sibling rivalry department. reporter:

jonathan: this is kind of a rough morning. players were at maddox -- redskins park, packing up their stuff. the team lost to the giants, after kirk cousins threw an interception, which sealed their fate. 8-7-1inished with an record. it was hard. the end of the season was a big disappointment.we thought we would have a playoff run. alison: some fans say they have been down this road before. reporter: you have that right. redskins fans, like the norton family here, the good thing is they can bank on their experience. they know too well what disappointed feels like. we are in ashburn. this place is really cool. they have a lot of memorabilia around. check outhi

but this is heavy. it is nasty and severe, over a pretty wide part of the deep south. they are under tornado watches. numerous reports of damage over portions of mississippi and alabama. while the whole area is headed in our direction, the elements that make it severe will not accompany the rain. heavy at times tomorrow, but nothing severe anticipated. futurecast to around 6:30 in the morning, a wedge of rain is moving in. definitely an impact for the morning commute. it also projects that most of it will be out by the afternoon. a little moisture will linger in the mountains, but we will be in pretty good shape by late afternoon. here's a close-up. wide area of study rain around 7:30. most of the heavy rain should be to the northeast around 11:30. it will stay cloudy. temperatures will be around 50 or so across the area. as far as

alison: we are back with a look at some new year's newborns. they arrived 10 minutes apart, but they are separated on the calendar by a whole year. a little boy named sawyer was rn on december 31 at 11:59, and his brother was born january 1. the same thing happened over the weekend in utah. they came three minutes apart. in san diego, a set of girls, four minutes apart. and both of these cases, the babies bridged the new year. jonathan: the best part of that, when you think about
