q mccray monitoring it from the satellite center and jonathan elias leads the coverage from the abc7 live desk. jonathan: it seems to get back to order now controlling the airport at the fort lauderdale international airport. earlier at 1:15 it was absolute chaos. first, tell you what happened. they are saying this guy apparently got off of a flight, went in the bathroom after he picked up a checked piece of luggage which was his pistol. he opened up the case, loaded the gun, came out of the bathroom and opened fire. without saying a word. then he reloaded and continued to fire. when it was over five people were dead, eight people were wounded. chaos at the airport happened because after police descended on the terminal, baggage claim area which which is not a secure part of the airport. police started showing up and everybody was racing out. a short time later there was more chaos as people were let out on the tarmac and they were told to stay there for their own safety. then there were reports that there was more shots fired in a separate area of the airport at a parking garage.

people's nerves have not frayed enough. they are held at the tarmac. eyewitnesses interviewed one by one. people's luggage strewn all over the place. they ran from the airport without their luggage. so they have to figure out whose bag belongs to who. this is an arduous, long, a process that will take a long time. but they have the bomb squad called in a short time ago. there was a suspicious package found. they took it to an area a little away from the airport and detonated that. but all of this is playing out while passengers are already terrified from the events that played out at 1:15 this afternoon. again, what happened was a guy got off the plane. he had just flown into fort lauderdale. hepicked up his bag. one thing we learned in the shooting is that the gunman flaw with his bag. his bag contained a pistol. he checked that in with the t.s.a. it is perfectly legal to travel with a pistol or rifle with ammo but you have to check it in with the t.s.a. and it has to be in a locked
