we're going to delve into that later on this morning, but we do have to start on the west coast and the states of emergency across the west because of the weather. about 500 homes in northern california's wine country have been flooded as the russian river crested yesterday three feet above flood stage. a second crest is expected tomorrow evening. >> the rain caused numerous rock and mud slides. one caught a news van. the photographer inside only has a few minor injuries but the van is completely totalled. there's also flooding along the truckee river in nevada with some roads and bridges closed. let's get more. >> reporter: with the relentless rains drenching the west for more than 48 hours the new danger, mud slides. >> you can see rocks sliding down. it's an active situation. >> reporter: this van crushed.

the driver a photographer for kgo injured but home from the hospital. the storm moving east in colorado springs near 90 miles per hour gusts snapping huge trees. knocking out power to thousands. in reno, nevada the governor declaring a state of emergency evacuating more than 1,000 residents. we met with a resident in lockwood. >> it's been unnerving. >> reporter: this excavator pulling debris and trying to keep water flowing in the truckee river. at least four killed in the west including the driver of this taxi after his taxi plunged into the water. >> reporter: the rain stopped here about 12 hours ago. just look at the water still pouring over the top of this dam. it's normally flowing at 1,000 cubic feet per second. that dam can is 70 years old.

it's holding back nearly 40 million gallons of reservoir water. >> reporter: in the sierra nevadas, this is all that's left of the pioneer cabin tree. it was hollowed out in the 1880s. much of the rest of the country still freezing after ice storms killed at least four in the south and brought snow and accidents all the way to the northeast. the truckee river runs through downtown reno threatening bridges as the water levels rise several feet above their flood levels. officials are hoping it drops off because there's more rain on the way. reno, nevada, abc news. >> unbelievable images out of the west, and the national weather, there's more on the way. >> let's get the forecast from paul williams. good morning, paul. >> good morning. now, if the rain wasn't enough, there's a sliver of california that's got to watch out for 4 to 8 feet of snow. that being said, we're really concerned about the rain between 8 to 16 inches throughout portions of california. at the least, four to eight. we're talking about massive rock
