are life threatening injuries. a person is in custody at the party city store, that is what we were told earlier but the police say that is not the case. they do not have anyone in custody. they are evacuating the hollister store. people were being escortedded out one by one. we are waiting to hear from the police about what happened but in the meantime there were shoppers inside the mall unfolding. we spoke with a woman named alyssa huff who tems us what she -- who tells us what she saw. >> i came back and the security started directing everybody to go another way. that was it. i tried to leave and the cops say nobody let us out. i just found out what happened. richard: we are waiting word from the police. the official word about what is happening now. if they are searching for suspect, if they have a

understand. a politician demanding bribes in exchange for payout of tax dollars. >> the evidence in the case shows that will campos treated the taxpayers' money as if it were a literal slush fund. brad: tough words about a politician. this time it's will campos. he has pleaded guilty to importants brides in exchange for the payout of the taxpayers dollars to businesses and the fake charities in the ten years as a councilmember. >> they were part and parcel of a long standing bribery scheme that reflected corruption on the part of mr. campos and a number of people who are willing to pay him in return for government benefits. brad: campos re-signed from the house of dell -- resigned from the house of delegates nine months in the term. by then he knew he had been caught doling out more than $340,000 from council and

exchange for the kickbacks. he issued a statement that reads in part, "i truly apologize to all of you, my friends and supports. to my family, as strange as its sounds i'm relieved this finally is coming to an end." at a press conference, the u.s. attorney and the f.b.i. officials made it clear the corruption scandal is not over. the chief of police promising to keep digging. >> there are no lengths that i and the men and women of the prince george's police department will not go to, to ensure the integrity of the institutions. brad: the crimes laid out in this plea agreement date to when campos was on prince george's county counsel. -- council. it does not have ties to the time in the legislature but sources tell us in that time he may have been cooperating with the federal authorities of the investigation of the other

p.g. liquor board scandal reported last week. it's all complicated but we are told this continues to grow and there are more competitions that will be charged. brad bell, abc7 news. michelle: on the hill today, alabama senator jeff sessions faced questions from the peers as they consider whether to confirm him as the next attorney general. and jonathan elias has a look at the hearing today. jonathan: we know that senator sessions was asked about all kind of things including the views on hacking in the presidential election. banning the muslims from entering the united states. closing guantanamo bay. civil rights and roe v. wade. but the hearing was interrupted more than a few time by protests. developing story on the hill where utah congressman jason chaffetz says he is planning to block the district's death with dignity bill. mayor bowser signed it last month to let terminally ill patients ends their lives with the help of a doctor. they must vote on a resolution to block a law and be signed by the president to be overturned. michelle: a 5-month-old baby is dead and now his father is charged. police say this man, 20-year-old roger miller jr. killed darnell barnes in october. miller called 911 claiming that the baby was unresponsive after a nose bleed and vomiting. in the investigation, doctors determine the child died from trauma to the head and say the injuries were not accidental. larry: taliban is claiming responsibility for twin bombings that killed at least 38 people and injured 45 others in kabul. officials say the bombers were targeting afghan parliament workers. the first blast came from a suicide bomber attacking on foot. the second blast came from a vehicle that exploded when police arrived to hel

the taliban in kabul since last summer. michelle: tonight the world is remembering the woman who broke the news that world war ii had started. claire holingworth was a british war correspondent. a week in her job she was the first to report that the nazis still invaded poland in august of 1939. talk about a scoop. she spent much of the career on the front lines in the middle east, north africa and vietnam. she died in hong kong this morning. she was 105. larry: coming up at "abc7 news at 5:00" -- two years after the navy yard shooting, evidence that security may still be lacking. michelle: later, parking plans curbed. folks thought they had a place to park in the inauguration find themselves making a change. larry: water main break put a crimp in

update. 24 hours after the lights went out at the washington monument, this was the scene out there. this is the second time it has gone dark in the last week and the latest in a series of mishaps at the memorial. d.c. bureau chief sam ford is live at the national mall with a look at what happens. sam: the pepco crews were here an hour or so. they left 15 minutes ago. they are still trying to determine exactly what caused last night's power failure. total power failure in the monument. it's the latest in a series of problems here. the problems seem to grow and grow. last week the spotlights stayed off because of a timer and last night there was a fault in the undergoing center that brings the

larry: again. michelle: i know. doug: it looks to be brief. the freezing rain goes in effect in the suburbs. start with a time lapse, on the weather bug network this morning in middletown. frederick county. snow on the ground from weekend. you will see more come down with band that came through early this morning. now we switch from snow to freezing rain. these are the jurisdictions and the counties and the incorporated towns and the cities in the county under the freezing rain advisory. it starts at 6:00 and runs through 1:00 a.m. this is still a ways off to the west. the temperatures are cold. low to mid-30's. there are some spots below freezing or at freezing.

we will have several hours of rain moving through and warming up overnight. this may be close to 40 by morning in downtown washington. here is satellite and radar. main line moving in. the leading edge of the front. that will overspread the mountains and approach the i-95 corridor in metro. but it will take a few hours to make the distance. it will give the temperatures time to drop a little bit so there is freezing rain concerns but for a brief period of time. we think in the overnight, once this moves out and you will notice this has the rain moving through around is:00. by then or after then, the temperatures should climb a few degrees. we don't anticipate the issues in the travel wise tomorrow morning. 40 in the city.

more rain moving in tomorrow night with another system that is expected but the temperatures above freezing. so there are no icy concerns tomorrow. just rain. thursday, nice change. for one day. it will become partly sunny with the highs at 64. friday is a 50-degree high but that is in the morning. the temperatures dropping with the increasingly cloudiness. we get to saturday and we get one day and drop back in 30's. that may coincide with a system to give us mix of rain and snow during the day. temperatures above freezing. i don't think it's a major impact from that. cloudy day on the day on sunday. looking ahead to dr. martin luther king day monday and the parade at 11:00. we have clouds and peek of sunshine. can't rule out a stray shower. i will be chill by but not bone chilling cold. upper 40's. next ten days. tomorrow a night break. becoming partly sunny. 52. rain at night. 64 on thursday. turn

the temperatures fall to 40's in the afternoon and a messy saturday with a chance of wintery mix. 40 on sunday. 47 for martin luther king day. looking to inaugurations day next friday. temperatures will climb and remain in 50's. there is still a chance of a shower on thursday and friday way down the road from here but at least the temperatures look favorable. there have been inaugurations in the past like 1985 president reagan's second inauguration canceled because of the extreme wind and wind chill. it was so bad. this looks mild. larry: i was here in 2009. we stayed in our hotel room and watched it on tv. it was so cold. michelle: search of forever feds in search of a home find one together. >> we gave it jerky, granola bar. larry: the lengths they went

larry: we are live in arlington with a look at live christmas trees. kimberly suiters? kimberly: that is the amazing thing. the tree did not burn, nor the other one, whether it had fire retar doesn't on it or not. this is after four minutes of having a flare directly on the tree. so an artificial tree is a safe deal if you have a house fire. this may be a different story. go ahead and light them up. we have the arlington county fire department helping us demonstrate the difference between the tree on the left was hand-treated with the fire retardant by us, two products we bought. the tree on the right not treated at all. both of them equally watered. both of them in a stand for about tw

so, if we can pan down a little bit jim to see the flares down at the bottom. as you can see, the one on the left that i sprayed with fire retardant, it didn't have much of an impact, did it? on the left-hand side i put one product in the left tree. wow! these went up fast. we are timing it. how quickly did they get fully engulfed? >> less than a minute. kimberly: less than a minute. both trees fully engulfed. it looks to us like the fire retardant product that we put on the left tree had almost no impact. although, both of them seem to be doing all right on the bottom right. maybe it's just the wind blowing through there. >> that and the way the fire burns up. age that in -- imagine that in a room.

michelle: now breaking news in dylann roof case. a jury sentenced to 22-year-old to death for killing nine church goers in a bible study in charleston, south carolina. it comes after roof told the jury in the closing statements that he still felt like he had to do it. had to kill those people. roof still faces a state trial in which he may face the death penalty again. larry: this just in. the aerospace defense command is planning exercises over the area so don't be alarmed or surprised if you hear low flying planes from midnight and 2:30 a.m. michelle: array of shortfall discovered at the washington navy yard two years after a contractor got a shotgun in a secure building and killed 12 people. stephen tschida joins us now with the finds of the interim investigation and the reaction to the -- internal

to the new information. stephen: they conducted the audit of security in building 197. only in that building in 2015, two years after the mass shooting in building 97 that killed 12 people it uncover 74 security lapses. today a news crew caught the attention of the security guards. but an audit revealed that an investigator managed to slip past security at the c systems command building two years after a contractor managed to get a contact in the same building to kill 12 people. >> how do you have the military personnel walking around and you let a person get in? stephen: the investigation found 74 security lapses such as the unqualified security guards. some lacked basic knowledge of the security brothers including how to use weapons. the safe where ammunition was held was left open sin

>> i hope they will address whatever they need to get addressed. stephen: perhaps the troubling finding is a lapse in security clearances. the shooter should have been barred from the job at the navy yard had those responsible properly vetted him. >> i am very surprised. security should be heightened at this point. >> this audit was only on building 197. the c systems command center. i spoke to a representative of the c system command center who said of the 74 security lapses in 2015, all but four have been rectified. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. michelle: now to a developing story out of florida where police are offering reward for capture of the man accused of

enforcement. that man is markeith lloyd. he is accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and shooting officer master clayton at a wal-mart. police believe that lloyd is getting help and anyone helping him faces serious charges. larry: covering metro tonight and the transit agency lawsuit against d.c. fire department. it stems from the deadly smoke incident at the l'enfant plaza station almost two years ago. the mayor and the fire chief addressing this and the transportation reporter is joining us live with what they had to say. >> larry, both the mayor and the d.c. fire chief saying that the firefighters in this city are trained and prepared to respond to any incident on metro. this comes after metro filed new claims in an ongoing lawsuit saying they were not prepared to respond to the deadly smoke incident two years ago. they argue that d.c. fire and e.m.s. ignored

montgomery county adopted center. we learned today they have been adopted together. they will go live with a family with kids and we hope they are all happy. hoping that last week when we saw this. michelle: you know a lot of times when you take in a dog it's a challenge to take two. so i'm glad there was a family out there that was able to take in both lady and rambo. they are adorable. larry: yeah. love that. michelle: complete opposites but perfect together. larry: exactly. michelle: well, it was a rough night for one dog in utah. it got stuck on the mountain. the rescue team scaled down to save it. but despite how many treats the dog wouldn't budge. he is just so nervous. the crew was forced to leave but vowed to come back the next day. by the time they got there the dog got down safely on its own. larry: wow! michelle: glad he is okay. that is way up there. larry: very high.
