that came out on the back deck of the town home. while he was out there the witnesses tell me they heard the police yelling to drop a gun. they are not sure what he did. but he went back inside after that. they say about that time a fire started, a big two-alarm fire that was coming out of some of the upper windows of the home. later on, neighbors heard gunshots. that was when the police fired at the man and shot him. he has now been pronounced dead at the hospital. there was another victim inside the home treated at hospital at this point. we are not sure what the injuries are. but initially this came down as a double shooting. we are working to confirm it with police who should give us an update any moment. there is a third victim treated on scene. this is in the mcnair farms neighborhood of herndon, a police neighbors tell me is usually very quiet. a lot going on today in this neighborhood. we will get the update from the police shortly. we should have a few

details for you when that happens. reporting live in fairfax county, herndon, tom roussey, abc7 news. jonathan: first tonight, a woman in a wheelchair, beloved member of the community shot to death on the way to the grocery store. the shots rang out after 10:00 this morning on elvan street in southeast washington. a second person also shot. that person survived. kevin lewis is joining us from the scene. what happened here? what are the circumstances surrounding the shooting? kevin: well, d.c. police are only saying they believe there were multiple gunmen. 68-year-old murder victim described to us as the mother hen of the neighborhood. the best eyewitness just may be that d.c. police camera attached to the wooden lightbulb located directly across the roadway. >> it's very, very, very unacceptable. >> on a day when the communities across d.c. were celebrating peace

jonathan: police in laurel are trying to figure out what caused a driver to veer off the road and crash in two light poles. this happened at 1:00 this afternoon, 219 near stephens road. the driver was the only person in the car right now listed in critical condition. the road was closed as they were investigating. now all lanes are back open. alison: it was meant as a chance to have fun over the possibility of a snow day with a student. but instead a tweet from an employee got her fired and now the employee is speaking out. cheryl conner joins us live from frederick. this started with a misspelling, right? cheryl: yeah

jonathan: one person is dead after a barricade situation. there is a shooting with police. a fire also. there is a lot going on with the story. tom roussey just spoke with the police for update on the situation. what is going on? tom: a lot of the details are becoming more clear here. step out of the way. there is a big fire and police presence. this is on covered wagon lane in mcnair farms in herndon. 2:40 this afternoon police were called out for a shooting. here is the time line we received. two brothers were shot and they were driving themselves to the hospital. police get on the scene and there is a man there with a hostage inside. they eventually determine. now police say at a certain point the man came to the front door and at that time, it is unclear if he is armed or not. police can't confirm that for us. one of the swat team members who have been called to

shot that man. he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. before it happened, at some point the witnesses told me he had interaction with police on the back deck. >> saw one of the fatigued gentleman dressed one an a.k. or whatever gun they had. they were running around to get everybody out of the way. they were like get in the house. i heard maybe gunshots or some type of -- i don't want to say explosive but some type of noise. >> this is the back deck he came out on. you see the upper windows and how they are not there anymore? there was also a two-alarm fire set by the suspect but not 100% sure. the person who was the hostage inside after the suspect was shot, the hostage was freed from up in the townhome there. we are told the only injuries the hostage suffered was smoke inhalation. they believe the hostage was another man so he was minorl

talk about the sports, a bit of history at the white house as president obama welcomed a championship team for the final time. alison: the president said this was a championship team that his entire administration was enthralled by and he was dealing with sick calls. president obama: one of my staff members was caught being interviewed at a bar outside of wrigley. [laughter] we are watching him being interviewed. do you remember, luke? he is looking kind of sheepish about it. why aren't you in the office? [laughter] alison: that is chicago cubs with the president today celebrating their first world series title since teddy roosevelt called the white house home. jonathan: as is traditional, the cubs presented the president as you saw with the own jersey. they raised the stakes for the life-long white sox fan giving him

jonathan: breaking news to share from istanbul. media reports say police arrested the gunman who killed 39 people in an istanbul nightclub in new year's celebrations. remember that? all we had was a selfie of the guy. he gained access to the nightclub dressed as santa claus and opened fire. the gunman was detained. turkish media say he was captured in a police raid at a home in istanbul and he was reportedly staying there with a friend. alison: we a

announcer: now "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. jonathan: that breaking news we are following is coming from herndon where we are on the scene of a wild chain of events including a fire, a barricade situation, a hostage situation and a deadly police shooting all at one home. maureen: a suspect shot by police has now died. three other people were shot in the incident. there is a complicated investigation unfolding. jonathan: let's get to tom roussey live from the latest from the scene where he was briefed by police. tom? tom: it is complicated but we are able to start it out for you for the most part here. it's still an active scene behind me. there were firefighters and police s.w.a.t. team members called out to the scene. here is video we took earlier this afternoon. one town home on covered wagon lane in the mcnair farms neighborhood. two men were shot at the townhome. that happened before any police were called. then police were called to the scene. at that point they say a man had a hostage inside

according to the neighbors with the police. at one point coming out on the back deck. another point coming to the window. he came to the front door. a neighbor told me he had something in his hand. she couldn't tell what. police opened fire and shot him. he was conscious on the scene after being shot. but later he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. the hostage was freed. police are telling me they think the hostage was a man but neighbors tell me the hostage was a woman. we are trying to sort it out. the hostage was only treated for smoke inhalation that we are told at the time. you have a total of three people shot. the two brothers initially shot and drove themselves to the hospital. we don't have an update on the injuries but they were at least well enough to drive themselves to the hospital. then also the man who was shot, the suspect in this case later pronounced dead at the hospital. then the hostage treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. it's still a long night. police and fire planning to
