golfer tiger woods did this week that he says he hasn't done in at least a decade. we'll reveal the answer in "the skinny" on this wednesday, february 1st. keep you in suspense. have to wait and see. >> got to wait for the secret to be revealed. good morning to you, everybody on this hump day. hope you are having a good day. start the half-hour with president trump announcing, judge neil gorsuch for his pick for supreme court setting the stage for a partisan battle. >> the president made the primetime announcement live from the white house. he praised gorsuch and gorsuch thanked the president for entrusting him. with what he called "a most solemn assignment." >> the 49-year-old is married. he has two daughters. he is from colorado. and harvard law grad. he clerked for justices white and kennedy. now judge gorsuch compared to

the late justice antonin scalia. the man he may replace. late last night he called scalia a lion of the law. abc's terry moran with more. >> was that a surprise? was it? >> reporter: in the east room, president trump enjoying the primetime spotlight announcing his supreme court pick, neil gorsuch. >> judge gorsuch has outstanding legal skills, brilliant mind, tremendous discipline and earned bipartisan support. judge gorsuch stepping forward speaking of the honor of the moment. >> standing here in a house of history acutely aware of my own imperfections i pledge if i am confirmed i will do all my powers to permit to be a faithful servant of the constitution laws of this great country. >> reporter: the colorado native has a top tier pedigree, law degree from harvard, also with honors, and a doctorate from oxford, he then went on to clerk for two supreme court justices, including justice anthony kennedy.

at 49 years old, he is the youngest nominee to the supreme court in 25 years. the response to president trump's pick came in fast and furious minutes after he began his remarks, democratic national committee issued their own statement. we cannot afford a supreme court justice who doesn't have the utmost respect for constitutional values of liberty, equality and justice for all. other democratic leaders weighing in, expressing strong concerns, from chuck schumer and nancy pelosi who addressed the pick in a cnn townhall. >> he's come down against employees rights. clean air, clean water, food safety, safety medicine, and the rest, if you care about that for your children, he's not your guy. president trump's pick, replacing scalia won't tip the balance of power on the court.

>> reporter: yeah, definitely. i mean they have been working on this for weeks, months. we have heard president trump, you know, months prior talking abut this on the campaign trail. how this was all rolled out. basically, president trump called judge gorsuch monday. letting him know he was the pick. a team from the white house, white house counsel, flew up to colorado, picked him up from a neighbor's house. back roads, to the airport. a military plane was waiting for gorsuch to fly him back to d.c. quite the plan. highly anticipated announcement yesterday. at the white house. that, a lot of people were waiting to hear. >> all the planning moves from the building that is behind you to the one that you are looking at right now. where the confirmation process

what's next? >> yeah, you are exactly right. and you know we heard from the white house, they said they're going to start moving this process along today. right here on capitol hill. they're calling it a robust effort. president trump's team they have already, already trying to win over democrats. vice president pence, he has been meeting one-on-one with moderate democrats. the last week or so. he was actually here on capitol hill just a few hours before president trump's announcement at the white house. but something to remember is that there is a 60-vote threshold for supreme court nominees. and that means that republicans need at least eight democrats to get on board and vote for gorsuch. if democrats block gorsuch, senate majority leader, mitch mcconnell is going to have to step in and change some of the rules. but, what you can expect is that this judge, judge gorsuch will get grilled by both democrats and republicans during confirmation hearings on everything from executive powers to even trump's latest in graduation order.

own, joining washington. the virginia governor, called the ban incompatible with what makes america great. both massachusetts and new york have also joined the suit. previously filed by the aclu. massachusetts attorney general called the order, harmful and discriminatory. >> the trump administration is defending the rocky rollout of that executive order. now insisting that it is not a ban even though that's the word they used to describe it. despite reports the president, or that he was blindsided by details of the order, secretary of homeland security, john kelly insisted he saw several drafts. >> this is not, i repeat a ban on muslims. his whole approach was part of what then candidate trump talked about for a year or two. so we knew all that was coming. as i said -- >> administration announced some 870 refugees will be allowed enter the country to avoid undo hardship. the acting head of immigration and customs says the government
