"the skinny" on this friday, february 3rd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> oh, my god. it is such a big, big deal in england and a big deal around here. we should point out that the brian ross unit has been investigating whether or not prince harry. >> is down with the swirl. >> he's down with the swirl. because she is of mixed race. we're going to delve into that in "the skinny" and find out what their findings are. but in the meantime, we're going to talk a little serious this half hour. the administration is sounding more like its predecessor on two key issues. first of course, there's russia. despite promising closer relations with russia, president trump's ambassador to the u.n. had harsh words for the kremlin. nikki haley said if russia does not stop the violence in crimea and give the territory back to ukraine, the u.s. also continue the sanctions against that country. of course, the second issue israel's settlements in disputed territories.

israel not to expand its construction plan. it said such expansion "may not be helpful in achieving peace in the region." however the administration stopped the short of declaring an official position on new settlements. >> and we're learning that a senior white house official telling abc news new sanctions against iran are in the works and may be announced as early as today. the trump administration put iran on notice blasting the country for testing a ballistic missile and supporting terrorists. the president said a range of options are under consideration and made it clear that he's not ruling anything out. >> military action off the table in iran? >> nothing's -- honestly, nothing is off the table. >> all right. >> and there's a call for new sanctions from a bipartisan group of senators. they sent a letter to the president saying iranian officials must feel sufficient pressure to stop their destabilization activities. president trump appeared poised

to blur the line between church and state as he attended his first national prayer breakfast. he proposed to totally destroy the tax rule barring churches and religious groups from endorsing political candidates. more now from abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: the president closing his eyes, bowing his head in prayer. >> may he never forsake us. >> reporter: and in this room packed with religious leaders, declaring himself one of the faithful. >> we are all united by our faith. >> reporter: many in the room, the evangelicals who helped propel him to the white house, and the president giving them a gift so many had wanted. a promise to, quote, destroy a law that bars tax exempt churches from endorsing political candidates. >> freedom of religion is a sacred right, but it's also a right under threat all around us. >> reporter: the religious right applauding his recent supreme court pick, neil gorsuch, who the conservative judge who talked about his faith at his nomination though his views on abortion are still unknown. but on the issue of gay rights, donald trump has disappointed some conservatives with his campaign statement

and as for the president's promise to repeal the law that bans churches from endorsing candidates, that would require an act of congress repealing part of the tax code. so far a big endorsement from one important member of the house, speaker paul ryan. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> house democratic leader nancy pelosi is slamming president trump's shake-up of the national security council. pelosi is especially critical about the elevation of the president's chief political strategist to the council calling the move stunning. although she does not mention him by name, it's clear that she is referring to steve bannon. >> what's making america less safe is to have a white supremacist named to the national security council as a permanent member. >> pelosi is also condemning the move to reduce the roles of military and intelligence officials describing their new status as don't call us, we'll call you. president trump also used the national prayer breakfast to ask for a bit of divine intervention for arnold schwarzenegger.

♪ some follow-up to the protest violence that broke out at the university of california-berkeley. the police chief there says the chaos started when more than 100 armed people, some dressed in ninja-like uniforms showed up. >> it started as a peaceful protest against controversial ed breitbart editor milo yiannopoulos. milo called what happened at berkeley politically violence in response to perfectly mainstream opinions in his words and he didn't stop there. we're up "up all nightline" with abc's kayna whitworth. >> reporter: milo continues to fan the flames on fox news.
