happy friday to you. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm linsey davis in for diane. we begin with iran. bracing for punishing new u.s. sanctions and possibly much more after testing a ballistic missile. >> senators from both parties are turning up the pressure and president trump says he's not ruing out military action. meanwhile, the president is defending a heated phone call with australia's prime minister as lawmakers intervene reassuring that nation that it still has unwavering american support. abc's elizabeth hur is following the overnight developments. she joins us here in new york. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: kendis and linsey, good morning to you. as far as iran is concerned both parties are coming together saying they're concern and president trump says he agrees and is not ruling anything out. from talking tough to taking action. >> that's what i do. i fix things. we're going to straighten it out. >> reporter: president trump ready to impose new sanctions against iran. >> iran continues to threaten u.s. friends and allies in t

region. >> reporter: the white house first put iran on notice earlier this week after iran tested another ballistic missile. iranian officials fired back saying they don't need permission to defend themselves. now, president trump says taking military action is also an option. >> nothing is off the table. >> reporter: the president defiant saying the u.s. will straighten out the world taking on countries like mexico, iran and even one of america's closest friends, australia. >> i called the australian ambassador to reinforce to him our commitment to australia and our relationship. >> reporter: senator mccain trying to mend fences after "the washington post" reported president trump told the australian prime minister on the phone saturday that of the four calls he had that day with foreign leaders, this was the worst call by far. slamming an agreement australia made with president obama to resettle some 1200 refugees in the u.s.

deal but later on camera the president sounded more diplomatic. >> a previous administration does something, you have to respect that. >> i think the president should sleep more and tweet less. >> reporter: and that was senator graham who is among the 20 senators from both parties who signed a letter urging president trump to hold iran accountable. the white house has not yet released details on sanctions but that could come later today. kendis and linsey. >> elizabeth, thank you. now to what appears to be a slight change in tone from this administration to israel. the jewish state saw the start of the trump presidency as a green light to build more settlements in the disputed territories. >> but now the trump administration is saying it might not be good for the peace process. benjamin netanyahu visits later this month. another surprise at the u.p.s. new u.s. ambassador nikki haley blasting russia for the recent violence in

russia by the obama administration would remain in place until russia returns crimea. as a candidate the president hinted that he might recognize russia's 2014 annexation of crimea. those violent protests at uc berkeley may lead to a financial hit from the federal government. president trump hinted on twitter about withholding federal funds from them after protests escalated into rioting wednesday night. in the senate a rare early morning vote to advance the nomination of betsy devos for education correct. lawmakers have been flooded with calls and e-mails from constituents looking to block it. susan collins and lisa murkowski said they plan to vote against her citing her lack of experience but vice president mike pence was planning to break an expected tie with a yes vote. head scratching after a statement from kellyanne conway on

conway referred to a bowling green massacre to justify president trump's ban on refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly muslim countries, listen. >> i bet it's brand-new information to people that president obama had a six-month ban on the iraqi refugee program after two iraqis came here to this country, were radicalized and were the masterminds behind the bowling green massacre. >> it didn't get covered because it never happened. all right, giving conway the benefit of the doubt she may have meant an incident in 2011 involving two iraqi nationals indicted for allegedly having dies to attacks against u.s. troops in iraq. those two men lived in bowling green, kentucky. some rattled nerves on capitol hill following an alleged procurement scam. capitol police and the fbi investigating congressional tech support staffers. according to buzzfeed reports, the investigation involves a

county landfill and recycling center. skytrak-7 over the scene at the center in lorton. firefighters tell us that when they arrived they found a trash fire three stories high. the fire is now out-- but firefighters expect to stay on the scene all day long. the cause of the fire is also under investigation. president donald trump will meet with his business advisory council for the first time today. but one major name will not be there. uber ceo travis kalanick has broken ties with the president's council-- in the wake of president trump's executive order on immigration. the ride-sharing service has been under fire since the travel ban last week. many users shared the hash-tag "delete-uber", as they switched to different ride sharing companies. kalanick says his participation in the council has been misenterpreted-- and it was never meant to be an endorsement of the president's agenda. the ceo of tesla will be at today's council meeting. but he says he has a few words for president trump. elon musk say

president trump's immigration order during the meeting at the white house. musk added that "attending does not mean that i agree with actions by the administration." prosecutors are moving forward with criminal charges for nearly a dozen protesters arrested during violent demonstrations on inauguration day. 10 people appeared in court thursday where they were arriaged on felony riot charges. in all-- 230 people who were arrested during inauguration day incidents involving broken windows, burned vehicles, and fighting with police. they are due back in court next month. it's official. the white house is about to get a new security fence. the new design was given the final stamp of approval thursday. it will be taller, and stronger- and use special technology to keep intruders out. the goal is to start construction next year. it's xx and we're just getting started. breaking right now out of fairfax county.
