past two hours at dulles international airport. jeff go now with the latest. jeff: well, michelle, the moments really are filled with a great deal of joy. but the travelers and the people waiting we are not sure in the past week whether or not the moment would happen. this is the international arrival at the dulles international airport. the individuals are offering free legal aid and free legal assistance. but today we saw two stories in which that joy came out in full strength. the kids could hardly contain the excitement. he lives in alexandria. his wife was living in sudan and obtained visa in december set to come to the united states. but her plans were put on hold when the travel ban went in effect. >> devastated. i thought about moving back but i didn't want to be without my wife.

the political leaders, he was rallvel. then the ban was lifted. >> i'm happy. >> another couple with a similar story. they live in falls church and several weeks ago she went to see her ailing parents in qatar. nine days ago she flew to dulles but was denied entry and sent back to qatar. >> i thought maybe i won't see my husband again. i believe that american people are really, really nice people. jeff: now they can embrace and smile at large. >> we came for freedom. we came for future and hope. we thought

into a planned 24-hour protest against some of president trump's cabinet picks. this right now is a live look at the senate floor. this push comes ahead of tomorrow's planned confirmation vote for betsy devos as education secretary. but there is a wrinkle in that plan. two republicans plan to oppose devos. opponents need one more republican to cross the aisle to block her nomination. jonathan: you want to talk about lucky. take a look at this. a pilot escaping this mangled plane or what is left of it that crashed in fort washington. he was even able to call 911 himself, direct the crews to the plane and met them outside the wood line. he was air lifted to the hospital as a precaution. it appears the plane lost power shortly after taking off. another crash with surprisingly minor injuries. look at this. a car crashing through the front door of the university mall theaters in fairfax. the driver had bumps and bruises but nobody else were hurt. prepares

this afternoon. michelle: investigators had a busy morning in alexandria. someone robbed the navy federal credit union branch in potomac yard. almost as soon as it opened this morning. the thief reportedly even dropped some cash in crystal city. police, though, say it wasn't a lot of money and they quickly found it. so far, no arrests in the case. jonathan: how about this? hours after raising hundreds of dollars for a program that feeds the homeless, a church in columbia heights discovered that the money was gone. stolen. as mike carter-conneen reports the thief made off with not only the cash but the safe that was holding it. >> program at st. stephen and the incarnation episcopal church serves hot meal to the homeless and vulnerable residents. >> because we provide so many resources here this is particularly saddening for us to experience.

>> they discovered that the safe had been stolen. >> it was a fundraiser saturday night. with the cameras inside and outside there is surveillance footage of the thief. it appears to be a man who uses a chair cart and then a wheelchair to move the safe out and away from the building. >> we are praying for him. it's obviously a person who struggling and has needs. >> but others have little sympathy for a person who targets a thief. >> the person who did this should be caught and come forward and pay for whatever he has taken from the church. mike: d.c. police are investigating. meanwhile the church changed all the locks. >> the one in the office specifically, the dead bolt, residential dead bolt. very easy to pick. we just changed it to a high security dead bolt. mike: because the fundraiser money was stolen they created a go fund me account. the church says any extra

additional meals for homeless. in northwest washington, mike carter-conneen, abc7 news. michelle: this weekend someone also broke into a gaithersburg mosque. montgomery county police say someone rifled through desks and drawers. the council on american-islamic relations sent out this surveillance picture. it appears that nothing was taken in the break-in but a $1,000 reward money is offered for answers to who is responsible. jonathan: coming up for us, fix for a mural of civil rights icons that some thought was tv show characters. michelle: plus, business owners say one change has people boycotting them. cost of parking and efforts to fight back ahead. jonathan: deadly result for avalanche in unexpected place. we have it for you next. doug: a warm front will move through tomorrow with showers but it will bring a good chance of record high temperatures to many part of

jonathan: take a look at this. a lot of snow. mountain of snow. it broke loose rapid caused an avalanche and killed more than 100 people along the afghanistan-pakistan border. several villages completely buried in the snow. hundreds of people were saved

staying in their cars that actually were trapped out on tween kabul and kandahar. afghanistan's primary airport now remains closed. it is buried under more than two feet of snow. michelle: coast guard investigators are targeting the safety culture of the doomed el faro cargoship. today marks the start of final hearing on the ship's sinking. a former chief will testify he didn't even know if life jackets were stored on the bridge as required. the el faro sank after getting caught in a hurricane in 2015. all 33 on board died. jonathan: shut down by a rat and a bed bug infestation. tonight it's unclear how long savoy elementary school in southeast will be closed. pest control spent the weekend cleaning up the building. they were back out there today. d.c. public schools is now providing meals for the students at the berry farm rec center. >> i hope that they can get this school cleaned up quickly and get it underway. because lke

jonathan: starting next week, metro is pulling the least reliable cars off tracks. right now only 82 of the 4000-series cars are still many service. those cars will be retired alongside the 1000-series which are the original ones to the 40-year-old system. been around a while. the goal is to have both modellals gone by the end of the year replaced by the 7000-series trains. michelle: a plunge in business has some reston business owners considering legal action. they say the sudden drop in sales traces back to one simple change. the cost of parking. tom roussey is live at reston town center to explain. tom? tom: you know these business owners met this afternoon and decided they want to pursue what the legal options might be. that is because most of the customers who come either park on the street for use one of the many garages here. but that is no longer free monday

jonathan: we have been shocked ss of business. tom: at world of beer at reston town center, they say business this january was well down from last january. even though last january had a blizzard that drove customers away. they place the blame on one thing. pay parking. >> overall, everybody has boycotted the area. they have taken a stand and finding other ways to entertain the friends or coworkers. tom: the parking at reston town center was always free. that ended early last month. now monday through friday it's at least $2. double that if you stay more than an hour. it keeps going up from there. >> it is hurting everybody. we are trying to find a solution. >> this afternoon, business owners and managers met to try to decide what to do. many say they are hearing the same things from customers. >> how bad it is. that they are never coming back. they are boycotting. tom: some businesses say they can't afford to pay to

parking. they also don't like what they say is a confusing ourages customers to download a parking app. >> they don't know which lot they have to park in and remember which lot, what collar garage they -- collar garage they park -- colorer garage they parked in. they don't like the system at all. tom: the spokesperson for the property that owns the town officer says nobody is dismin niching the concern of retailers. he says he thinks things will settle down. saying paid parking has only been in operation for 30 days. to do a proper analysis takes a longer period of time from boston property perspective. he says the money will go for things like infrastructure, upkeep and events here at the reston town center. reporting live in reston, i'm tom roussey. abc7 news. jonathan: a big change is made to the mural many looked at and thought it's un recognizable. they
