these winds are really pushing this snow coming down hard, coming down fast here in snowy philadelphia and just take a look behind me. that mountain of salt there, there's 107,000 tons of salt, plows are loading up with it to take on this storm. this morning, a major winter storm slamming the east coast. 50 million americans caught right in the crosshairs. the crippling whiteout and white knuckle conditions causing a messy morning commute. that powerful storm system taking its toll from nebraska to ohio. now barreling up the east coast. icy roads were to blame for this 55-car pileup in massachusetts bringing traffic to a standstill. >> my car got hit by another vehicle when i was spinning. >> reporter: and this crash in boston where one was killed after a driver lost control on the slick streets. >> full black ice, couldn't control the car. >> reporter: and watch as this car slips and slides down a sheet of ice. >> watch out. watch out.

>> reporter: uncontrollably bouncing off cars. >> very nerve-racking having my son in the backseat. >> reporter: a far cry from the record springlike temperatures in the east just 24 hours ago. now residents in philly, new york and boston trying to dig out. and what makes this storm worse here in philly is that this actually started as rain which means they couldn't use all of that salt here in philly to pretreat the roads because it would just all wash away so now these plows have to go out there and try to treat these roads after the fact. it just means you have to be very, very careful on these roads. george. >> it is going to be a messy morning. gio, thanks. this storm hitting the northeast at rush hour creating all kinds of hazards and abc's linzie janis right in the middle of it on the new jersey turnpike. >> reporter: good morning. the national weather service says travel is not, i repeat, is not recommended this morning in this area because of the heavy snow and you can see why. have a look at this. the conditions are pretty bad.

you've got snow blowing across the roadway. this is what accumulation of 2 to 4 inches an hour looks like starting to accumulate quite heavily on the roads right now. we can hardly see which lane we're in. my producer is from california so i'm nervous with him driving but it's not a good situation out here. it looks like a country road and here it is a major highway. >> well, better him driving than you right now, linzie, but in the meantime, it does seem like the road is pretty empty so people are taking the advice of the officials. >> there's certainly less traffic than normal but have seen some commuters headed into the city. a lot of heavy trucks. a reported six accidents already this morning on the new jersey turnpike. we saw one of them. everybody is moving pretty slowly. it's a dangerous commute out here this morning, george. >> okay, be careful out there. >> we're going to go from the roads to the runway. the airlines are delaying and canceling thousands of flights this morning.

adrienne bankert is at logan airport. good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: i have a smile on my face. i can't speak for the passengers behind us. some of the last to get out on some of the last flights out of boston logan international airport. 65% of canceled flights coming out of the airport and into the airport. these cancellation notices, 2700 flights, 2,778 to be exact all across the u.s. will not take off today. compare that to a normal day. only 100 usual cancellations. our flight was canceled from laguardia to boston last night. now thankfully we were able to get on a delayed jetblue flight. that was good news. but that's not what a lot of people are going to be facing today. in fact, jetblue, one of the hardest hit airlines all across the country especially the northeast. in pittsburgh we know that they have tried to do everything they can to clear the tarmac and the runways there. they have this giant snowblower in pittsburg

but many people are going to be out weathering the storm and some people are just going to have to stay home. michael. >> adrienne, if you're supposed to fly today should you stay at home or do you have to worry about losing your money? >> reporter: you know what, thankfully a lot of the airlines including 11 major airlines hawaiian, the latest to add to the list, they are making sure that people get their money back, in fact, they are giving people vouchers so that those change fees are waived. many times the fare difference will also be waived but you want to call your airline, in fact, many of them have differing policies so you only have days to get that ticket and actually use it once the snow rolls through, michael. >> thank you, adrienne. rob, you made it back in, my friend. >> much warmer and drier inside for sure. the winter just howling outside and those are going to continue to pick up. rain/snow line south of philadelphia and see the column get colder. it will tn into a very fluffy

explosion at a nuclear power plant. let's go to abc's lama hasan for the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning. this is a fast developing story. here's what we know. this morning explosion in the engine room at a nuclear plant on france's northern coast sparked a fire injuring at least five people at the plant. the fire is believed to have started by a fan which had a hardware malfunction in the engine room where the electricity is produced. rescuers are at the scene assessing the damage right now. officials have told abc news that there is no risk of a radiation leak calling it a significant technical event, but not a nuclear incident because the fire took place outside the nuclear zone. george. >> okay, lama, thanks very much. >> we'll stay on top of it. to the latest on president trump at odds with his supreme court nominee, judge neal gorsuch who is calling the president's harsh words about the court, quote, demoralizing and disheartening. let's go to our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega for much more on all this. good morning, cecilia.
