searching. let's get straight to richard reeve who is on the scene. rich? richard: yeah, john, firefighters say it was a male body found. we'll push it in and show you the scene there. right by the excursion boat. this was at about 1:50 or so they began searching for this person. we have some video to show you. apparently a woman on the shore here at the foot of prince street saw that man go in. now, authorities still investigating, trying to figure out why that man went into the water. but you can just imagine on a day like this the temperatures in the potomac river very, very cold. they have recovered the body a short time ago. reporting live, richard reeve, abc7 news. jonathan: wow! snow in connecticut, a strong storm is battering the northeast. michelle: white-out conditions from philadelphia to new england. alison: an

slamming in the massachusetts coast before snow was falling sideways when that arrived there. jonathan: the city that never sleeps got blanketed. michelle: stormwatch7 team coverage with chief meteorologist doug hill following the storm and the local advisories. alison: lana zak is in central park but we'll begin with doug and the winter weather alert. it is old out there. doug: it is and we were barely touched compared to what happened up the coast. we are getting the backlash now. the blizzard conditions stretch from rhode island through boston to the coast of maine. enormous lightning with the system as well. it continues to intensify at this hour. look how quickly it has dropped a lot of snow. in massachusetts they have 18 inches of snow so far. 17 in connecticut. springfield, massachusetts, 13. almost a foot in fairfield. and in central park in new york city, nine inches of snow on the ground. that is exactly where we find abc's lana zak bundled up against the big february

lana? lana: hi there, doug. more than 3,000 flights have been canceled. here in new york city, john f. kennedy airport issued a complete ground stop. everybody trying to stay safe as we are facing this winter whiplash. hear that noise? [thunder] that is thunder snow in connecticut. okay, all right, all right. 50 million americans affected by the storm. schools canceled. commuters staying home. the biggest danger are the slick roads. look at the tractor trailer on i-87. in suffolk county, new york, state of emergency were declared. first responders had to flip over a truck that collided with an s.u.v. authorities are urging everyone to stay off the roads. >> these roads are bad. they will only get worse with the snow accumulation and the wind. lana: yesterday was a different story. a perfect spring day. wednesday record high 62 degrees in central park. what a change from yester

days. around here, we have a pretty good snow squall and snowshowers to the west of the metro area. we are tracking one near dulles. the visibility is very low, it's near white-out conditions now because of a squall along 66 coming west of the district, heading to the western section of fairfax county. that will affect traffic temporarily. the winds are driving the snowshowers from the great lakes. we have had a gust in the past hour to 40 miles per hour in wint. 31-mile-per-hour -- 40 miles per hour gusts in winchester and 31-mile-per-hour in the metro. what is coming up and what do we have in store? we'll let you know in a few minutes. michelle: intense wind gusts bringing down wires in falls church. this is north of route 7. fairfax county police warning drives to find -- warning

this area. it will be closed until midnight. this is the scene in philadelphia. there is a plane on the tarmac. they have white-out conditions there. thousands of flights have been canceled. there is a plane in the tarmac as we just showed you. it's tough to see, though. this is having a cascading effect across the country. jeff goldberg is at national airport. many travelers are seeking other options, right? jeff: no question. that is what we have seen, the cascading effect. throughout the day it has gotten a little better with the departures. a lot of on time and flight delays for other part of the country. but there are problems, cancellation and delays of a couple of hours going into new york. that is a situation that is disrupting travelers quite a bit. we spoke to several travel evidences dealing with the delays from the -- travelers dealing with the delays from the storm. from three or four hours up to 24 hours. people are flying to

john: queen jones and sheila had visions of sunny beaches when they booked a cruise on the carnival magic last fall. unfortunately a hurricane had other plans. >> hurricane matthew came through and it prevented us to flight down. john: with the flight canceled the women called about a refund but they were stunned when the agent told them -- >> we'd have to file an insurance claim to get our money back. john: but they couldn't because they had not purchased insurance. figuring if there was a hurricane they would have no problem to get a refund. >> never was it explained to me to get insurance for weather. it was if you got sick prior to cruise you could file a claim to get money back or something happened during the cruise. john: even if there is a big storm or your flight is canceled you are still not entitled to a refund from the cruise line if that ship sails. that is why it is so important to purchase trip insurance from a site like tripinsurance.com or the cruise line or travel agent.
