the white house. that three-judge appeals panel deciding not to reinstate the president's travel ban. a big setback for president trump. the ban set off chaos at airports hours after it went into effect. families detained. makeshift legal clinics set up. an iraqi translator for the u.s. government turned away and only allowed back into the country once the washington state court put the travel ban on hold. >> i fought for my rights and i succeeded. >> reporter: president trump started attacking the judges of the 9th circuit court even before they issued their ruling. > i was a good student. i understand things. i comprehend very well. okay? better than i think almost anybody. and i want to tell you, i listened to a bunch of stuff last night on television that was disgraceful. >> reporter: but lawyers for washington state argued the president's executive order violated the constitution and

travelers from the affected countries but also to the state of washington. >> what's the irreparable harm to the state of washington? >> we had students and faculty at our state universities that were stranded overseas. we had families that were separated. >> reporter: the white house argued that the president clearly has the authority to impose the ban and that putting it on hold is downright dangerous. >> believe me, i've learned a lot in the last two weeks and terrorism is a far greater threat than the people of our country understand. >> jonathan karl, abc news. and president trump is pushing back against reports his supreme court nominee criticized his attacks on the judiciary as demoralizing. the president said the comments made by judge neil gorsuch were misrepresented. but that comes after the remarks were corroborated by a spokesperson for gorsuch and at least three senators including richard blumenthal of connecticut.

>> judge gorsuch told me and there were white house staff in the room that he is disheartened and he finds these attacks on the judiciary to be demoralizing and disheartening. >> the meeting was private but blumalthal says gorsuch told him it was fine to repeat what he said. enthal is now calling on gorsuch to go public with his criticism of the president. >> democrats spent hours on the senate floor detailing their opposition to congressman tom price. they painted him as the architect of the plan to dismantle obamacare. but republicans championed his fitness for that job citing his extensive knowledge of the health care system. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan is requesting more assistance in fighting america's longest war. general john nicholson told a senate committee that a few thousand more troops are needed to help train and advise afghan soldiers. nicholson also noted russian

meddling is complicating the counter-terrorism fight. the taliban expanded its territory as the number of u.s. troops have declined. >> in your overall assessment, are we winning or losing? >> mr. chairman, i believe we're in a stalemate. >> the white house is reviewing u.s. military strategy all around the world. so it's unclear if the trump administration would approve an increase of u.s. forces in afghanistan. meanwhile, the president bashed john mccain for questioning the success of the yemen raid. the president tweeted that mccain's talking about the mission's success or failure only emboldens the enemy. he also said mccain doesn't know how to win anymore. a navy seal died in the january 20th raid along with dozens of civilians. >> an well, since city schools are closed again today after a blizzard dumped as much as 19 inches of snow on parts of the northeast. with temperatures in the teens and single digits overnight, slush on the roads is refreezing and commuters this morning could be in for another long day of traffic accidents. and polic

those slippery conditions resulted in this crash. that vehicle slamming into a home. three residents were upstairs at the time. they were not injured but the crash knocked the house off its foundation and utilities had to be shut off. wow. so the house is no longer habitable. can you believe that? the residents were allowed to retrieve some of their belongings. the driver had only minor injuries and was not ticketed. temperatures by the way there in new hampshire in the single digits overnight. and it's going to get colder in some areas. let's get the complete forecast from accuweather's justin povick. good morning. >> kendis and diane, thanks and good morning to you. it's the wake of the storm now that we're going to be looking at on this friday. winds are subsiding. the snow is over. but we're still digging out and it's still cold. temperatures running below normal. you again need the heavy coats all along the interstate 95 corridor. some clouds out there, as well. we stayed busy in the southwest. now the rain spreading toward

of arrests or any arrests. >> but there's a development that is adding fuel to that fire. an arizona mother who has been deported to mexico had been living in the u.s. for several decades until an immigration check days ago. >> protesters voicing outrage after she was forced to leave her children behind. abc's clayton sandell has the latest. >> reporter: for years, the government left guadalupe de rayos alone. not anymore. [ chanting ] protesters gathered in phoenix overnight, even holding the wheels on a government immigration van in a desperate move to stop it from taking her back to mexico. [ chanting ] garcia came to the u.s. from mexico illegally as a teenager. and like many undocumented workers she used a fake social security number to get a job. that resulted in a felony conviction. she was ordered back to mexico, but with no history of violence or other criminal record was allowed to stay pending appeal. >> last week, they weren't
