announcer: from abc7 news this is a breaking news alert. alison: we begin with break news in montgomery village where two people have been shot. this is the 8500 block of hawk run terrace. we are told by authorities one person is dead. that person was found right in front of one of those town homes there. a second person is at the hospital. now police are trying to see if the two are connected. we are told five people are currently in custody. they are all being questioned about the shooting. so abc7 following this story in montgomery village. we will have much more information as soon as we get it. stay with us. michelle: also breaking a school bus accident in north carolina. this is in the southwestern part of the state in a town called "newton." we know one student was hurt in the crash. it look like a driver hit the bus head on. when we get more details we will pass it along. jonathan: this afternoon only on 7, betsy devos was blo

she was trying to get in the school. she was just sworn in as cabinet member. they blocked her on the steps. we will have much more on the confrontation at jefferson middle school in a moment. >> you should be so proud of yourself. jonathan: those were the protesters who were chasing her. when she didn't get in the school she was escorted back to the s.u.v. and taken away. very tense moments. alison: that is coming up. first, though, students in loudoun county walking out. michelle: this happened a short time ago, protesting president trump's immigration policies. richard reeve is at rock ridge high in ashburn. rich, what is their mission today? richard: well, this was a multiple school protest. their biggest concern they say is the trump travel ban even though the courts have ruled against it. take a look. you can see some of the students walking out. they walked out of school at 2:30. about 100 students from rock ridge high

about 50 from another school. this part of loudoun county, a very diverse area. many, many muslims go to school here. students from every religion and every race. they are worried about that travel ban being reinstated. they gathered at the stadium behind the school. we talked to one student whose father from iraq and mother is from turkey and she is a muslim-american. >> i personally felt very, i have been very, you know, fearful about the future, about muslims in general because of sort of what is going on with the presidency right now and the executive orders that have been made. richard: substitutes face a skip or tardy note in their records. the school officials say look, we want them to be able to express their civil rights but they need to know there are ramifications for skipping out at school. coming up at 5:00, we will speak to a girl who went to this rally

trump supporters and half are not. for now, live in ashburn, richard reeve, abc7 news. michelle: still no decision from a federal alexandria judge on what is next for the aziz brothers. they are the face of the virginia lawsuit against the travel ban. the men were midair when the executive order took effect. lawyers requested an injunction despite the hold on the travel ban saying anything could happen. jonathan: only on abc7 this afternoon, back to that secretary devos protest in d.c. at jefferson middle school. check out the videotape. you see the protesters, they literally run to the steps before the education secretary could make it in forcing her to find another way. then they actually blocked her car. it was very tense this afternoon. abc7's sam sweeney and photo journalist dale wright captured all of it. sam: despite being sworn in and already on the job for several days, secretary of education betsy devos' j

today she was physically blocked from entering jefferson academy middle school in southwest d.c. you can see in the video the secretary tries to get in the backdoor of the school but she is confronted physically and then blocked out. >> you do not represent anything that they stand for. >> you are giving money to senators and buying your way in the position. you should be so proud of yourself. you should be so proud of yourself. go back. >> go back to the car. >> shame, shame, shame! sam: out front of the school, another situation. protesters blocked her security detail from entering. with the street shut down one protester screamed his foot had been runed over. eventually police grabbed and shoved the protesters out of the way. at this hour, it's unclear what group the protesters are with but it's not the teachers union. they came earlier in peace to welcome the new secretary but with a strong message. >> each of the parents are concerned because we

avenue a lot of people believe is going to lead down simply because it is the ultimate say in the judicial system. but at the same time, he can do a couple of things. one, he could take the order that has already been debated so heavily and redactor revise portions of it. for example, the part inclusive of those who hold greencards. the part that relates to religious minorities. otherwise, people believe christians might get preferential treatment. if you take out the elements, perhaps it could stand in the courts that have already discussed it. the other option that president trump has is to unveil something completely new. will it be a different executive order? are there other powers he can implement to get his point across and do what he says is keeping america safer? either way, he made it pretty clear he plans to do something and very soon. take a listen. president trump: we are going to do whatever is necessary to keep our country safe. so we

very rapidly, having to do with additional security for our country. you will be seeing that sometime next week. in addition, we will continue to go through the court process. ultimately i have no doubt that we will win that particular case. scott: so he says sometime next week. we don't know what that may be except that some of the attorneys that represent the administration, they were in court today in virginia discussing another challenge. they said they are considering all options. they may appeal, they may not. not tipping their hands. we don't know that they know just yet what they want to do. alison: thank you for the latest there. earlier today, tom price was sworn in as secretary of health and human services. it was a party line vote. it happened in the night while you were likely sleeping. the now former republican congressman from georgia is expected to play a key role in repealing and replacing the affordable care act. michelle: joshua

murder. they are strolling casually toward their target. the man with the hat is clutching a knife. what detectives believe will be the murder weapon. if they aren't recognizable to those who know them in that video, police hope this clip of their silver lexus will lead to their identities. it was tuesday afternoon when the man attacked and allegedly killed 34-year-old barnes in the exxon station at central avenue at addison. barnes is known to sit and ask people for money. the theory is he angered those men and they went around the station, parked and came back and stabbed barnes once in the heart. that is one of the reason that the police are work something hard on the case. they believe it was a cold-blooded killing by someone who felt they had been perhaps disrespected. we will be back here at 5:00 when we said detectives plan

alison: just look at this. pretty scary. this is at j.f.k. last night. an engine caught fire right before taking off. they were going to buenos aires. the entire plane, you can see in the pick cheer, just -- in the picture, just covered in flames. they put the fire out and no one on board was hurt. jonathan: they got their full attention. scary. four people have been arrested for planning a terrorist attack. two were a boyfriend and girlfriend and they were radicalized online. they both had explosives with them and say the attack was imminent. the explosive

november 2015 attack in paris and the march 2016 attack in brussels by isis. and from the war on terror in france to our own backyard. virginia, a former national guardsman from sterling was sentenced for planning an attack similar to the fort hood shooting inspired by isis. our suzanne kennedy was in the courtroom. suzanne: federal prosecutors say mohamed jalloh was enamored with isil and planning a fort hood style attack on the u.s. military. the defense says the sterling man who served in the virginia national guard was a troubled person and not a radicalized terrorist, just a person with a superficial understanding of isil. in the end, the 27-year-old who pled guilty to providing material support to a terrorist organization was sentenced to 11 years in prison. a tearful jalloh testified saying he was deeply ashamed of his actions and he did what he did only because he was seeking purpose in his life. he says, i'm quoting

"the entire crime is not who i am, who i plan to be, who i have been." he did seem happy with the sentenced. he waved and smiled at his family who were in the courtroom. they left today without making a comment. mohamed jalloh sentenced to 11 years in prison. at the alexandria federal courthouse, suzanne kennedy. back to you. >> mike pence is like the most decent human being i have ever met. michelle: that is house republican jason chaffetz getting booed in his hometown. you can hear him stand up for mike pence, vice president there. that sent the crowd to the frenzy. toward the end of the town hall the tone did begin to change. chaffetz repeatedly sought to assure attendees he wanted to listen. actor account -- actor "the rock" and

jam-up from the ninth street ramp and the brentwood parkway making sure way to bladensburg road. we had an earlier incident on the inbound side. that is now clear. looking to 395 on the inbound 14th street bridge, traffic is moving at a good pace but you will start to see the jam-ups forming on the bridge span as you head to the third street tunnel to the southeast/southwest freeway. it remains jammed to the outbound 11th street bridge. taking a look now at the wilson bridge on the outer loop, heavy volume there. it begins at telegraph road making your way across the bridge span. that is a look from the traffic center. back to you. alison: thank you. have a good weekend. abc7 on storm watch. rain is still a big problem out west. look at this. washington state. this is in maple valley. a mudslide just took out a home. the home is a total loss. but the accident could have been worse. the mudslide started rolling a 5,000-gallon fully loaded propane

alison: but it did not explode. michelle: thank goodness for that. in the northeast, there is a big problem following the snowstorm. americans are digging out today and in some cases they are doing it in temperatures that feel like the single digits to make clean-up more difficult for new englanders. >> it's not bad. it's fluffier than it could be. i'm not complaining we could have had worse. michelle: they are used to it. icy roads are the biggest danger this evening and there is more winter weather on the way. jonathan: it's nice that you have a new englander with a porch half full mentality. michelle: light and fluffy. doug: there is more coming in tomorrow, tomorrow night and sunday. michelle: hopefully they will take whatever share comes to them. jonathan: they are working out their

early morning there are breaks in the overcast. but it will feature cloudiness tomorrow. i wouldn't be surprised to get little areas of sunshine. the winds are out of the south/southwest and we head to lower 60's. late saturday and sunday we feel effects from the warm front and the cold front. the storm system headed to canada for sunday and a lot of snow. the worst that we will see are the sunday showers around the area. front will pass through and it will get windy late sunday and monday but that is the only effect of the system. so the weekend forecast is cloudy. there will be sun. 62 tomorrow. mostly cloudy on sunday. upper 60's with a 60% chance of the showers developing in the day. the average high is 46. coming up in a little bit we will look at the next ten days. i think it will be an interesting, interesting pattern here as we are still going to have uppings and downs -- ups and downs but they have not as radical. what does that mean? i have no clue. i'm just here to report it. jonathan: it sounded god

michelle: every president has an impression on "saturday night live." it is tough to tell the guys apart. alison: i know. all the sketches are hilarious and legendary but now alec baldwin brought hilarious version to the sketch show but he explains to kidd o'shea he is not doing it for money. there is not much in it. kidd: this weekend, alex baldwin will host "saturday night live" for a record 17th time. his impersonation of donald trump is part of their ratings uptick. but you might be surprised how much he takes home from each appearance on the show. there was a recent article that everybody went crazy that you only get paid $1,400 an episode to do s.n.l. people were shocked by that. >> lauren is my friend. when you host "saturday night live" you are not paid an exorbitant amount of money either. the "saturday night live"

jonathan: we met with q mccray and he found out that lieutenant jim downing might be 103 years old but he recalls every detail of the pearl harbor attack like it was yesterday. >> this is the letter i wrote. q: a letter 75 years old. jim downing has lived a long fruitful life but there is one day he will never forget. the bombing at pearl harbor. >> the saddest thing i saw this morning, blown the ship in the water. q: this 103-year-old recalled the details like it was yesterday. >> while we were eating breakfast we heard a huge explosion. >> it took him 15 minutes to get back to the ship. the worst was done but he

reagan national at 37. winds from the southwest at 14. dew point is the true point of the moisture. the air is bone try. i have been looking at the doppler radar showing snow to the north. that won't make it here but the closer you are to the pennsylvania line you could see a flurry. cloudy tonight. temperatures are holding steady. why? southwesterly winds and cloud cover preventing a drop off. tomorrow we start with the cloudy skies. we have a little sunshine but rather cloudy day. the temperatures are up to 62 degrees. there is a 60% chance of showers developing through the afternoon and the evening. it will be a cold front. then it will get wendy here. -- get windy here. late sunday is a very windy period. this storm system is going to develop to the north. cranks up. part of the area might wind up

night and monday morning. it's cooler and milder for valentine's day and 53. 47 on wednesday. thursday and friday mid-40's. so there you have average february weather. but when we head through next weekend the same thing happens again. the temperatures go up. upper 50's on saturday and back to the mid-20's by the following monday -- mid-60's by the following monday. john? >> that is crazy. jonathan: a natural gas fire and explosion in louisiana big enough to see from the highway. a phillips 66 employee still missing after the blast. he is one of six crew members working the line when the accident happened last night. about 30 miles west of new orleans. two others were taken to the hospital. investigators are still working to determine if the high winds played a role in what made a tractor trailer drive off the chesapeake bay bridge-tunnel. michelle: that crash killed the driver. 47-year-old joseph chen. amy aubert joins us with the latest on the story.

amy: today chen's wife describing the father of two as an awesome husband. now let's get to the video that is showing where this happened. you can see the barriers on the side of the bridge smashed. the waves whipping below. take a look at the picture. this truck in chesapeake bay. the driver was reportedly seen standing on the roof of the truck but by the time the helicopter reached him he was found in the water and unresponsive. there were not travel restrictions because the winds were between 20 and 27-mile-per-hour. chen's wife saying they would have celebrated their tenth anniversary in april. heartbreaking. jonathan: interesting to find out what caused the truck to go over. amy: they are looking into that. jonathan: thank you. michelle: an amtrak train from d.c. to boston got stuck overnight due to electrical issues that knocked out the

the passengers were forced to endure bitter cold for five hours. to make matter worse the bathrooms were broken. jonathan: covering metro this noon after a month long break, safetrack returns tomorrow and it will affect the blue line. this is what you need to know about surge 12. no trains will run between rosslyn and the pentagon. the arlington cemetery station is closed. blue line trains will be replaced by yellow rush plus service at all time between franconia springfield. it will run through february 28. michelle: two people are in critical condition after a fire. one man passed out in the front yard and another had to be rescued from the basement. that is where the officials say the fire started. >> i hope that john is okay. and anybody else in the house at time. i hope they are all right. i have been here 14 years. he was here when i came. michelle: two were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. investigators are trying to figure out what started the fire. now to an update. the virginia tech student accused of killing a 13-year-old girl says he may have been worried she was pregnant. 19-year-old david eisenhower is charged with first-degree murder in the death of nicole lovell. fellow student natalie keepers is charged with accessory after the fact.

week, keepers said eisenhower met her at a party and worried he might have gotten her pregnant. jonathan: d.c. health department shut down whole foods market because of rodents, insects and pests. it's not the only big grocery store shut down. stephen tschida is live in georgetown to explain it to us. that has to be frustrating. a little alarming. stephen: for customers, yeah. the whole foods opened an hour and a half ago, maybe two hours ago. 45 minutes ago in the heart of georgetown another closure sign from the health department. this time again because of rodents. we hung out in front of the whole foods throughout the day. a lot of customers frustrated from the rodents trying to come in from the cold. popular whole foods on bustling wisconsin avenue. usually business but not today.
