and as president trump tries to shift the blame following the dismissal of his former national security adviser. >> reporter: today for the first time, a high level trump administration official will come face-to-face with a russian authority when secretary of state rex tillerson meets his russian counterpart in germany. but it's the secret meetings with trump campaign officials and russian operatives that everyone is talking about. everyone except the president. >> mr. president, can you guarantee that nobody on your campaign had any contact with the russians? mr. president, any questions on russia? mr. president? >> reporter: the bombshell russian revelations as the administration is still reeling from the dismissal of national security adviser michael flynn for deceiving the vice president about his conversations with the russian ambassador. instead of refuting the flynn allegations, the president went on the attack. >> general flynn is a wonderful man. i think he's been treated very, very unfairly by the media. as i call it, the fake media in

thing that he was treated so badly. >> taking that cue, house republicans now calling for an investigation into the leaks surrounding the ouster of flynn, not the actual communications themselves. overnight, top committee chair jason chaffetz calling for the inspector general to get involved. but some republican senators are more concerned about the chaos and dysfunction at the white house this week. >> you don't know who's in charge. this flynn situation. the whole environment is one of dysfunction in the trump administration. the president's answer to all of this, announcing overnight his first re-election campaign rally. scheduled for this weekend in florida. >> tickets. >> already campaigning for 2020. >> little do a lot of people know that he already filed the paperwork for his 2020 campaign re-election campaign. >> he's not wasting time on that one. >> looking forward to it already. already a rally in the orlando melbourne area.

a lot of people talking about who he didn't take questions from at all this week. he had a lot of availability. but nobody. >> but only took questions from conservative christian outlets and who didn't ask him at all about the allegations about his campaign being in touch with russia during the campaign season. so we're going to see as the white house press briefing comes up what kind of questions we'll get answered as the week goes on. >> as you can imagine, it sat well with the rest media in that room. > i'm sure everyone was really happy. and meanwhile, the u.s. military is keeping an eye on russia, as well after a russian spy ship started moving along the east coast. >> the vessel is staying in international waters but was last seen about 30 miles from america's biggest submarine base in connecticut. democratic lawmakers from connecticut are calling the ship's movement another step in russia's increasing aggression. this is believed to be the fourth time since 2014 that russian spy ships have hovered floor u.s. navy bases. >> defense secretary jim mattis

to increase their defense spending. mattis says if that doesn't happen, then the u.s. will "moderate its commitment to the alliance," while saying the u.s. can no longer shoulder most of the nato burden, mattis also has called nato the fundamental bedrock of u.s. relations been the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is praising his meeting with president trump tweeting it was a successful day for israel. >> last night, netanyahu met with congressional leaders but he refused to answer questions about what he might be willing to do in order to achieve peace in the middle east. abc's cecilia vega has the details. >> reporter: a red carpet white house welcome for benjamin netanyahu's arrival. two leaders and friends. but inside the east room, president trump putting israel's prime minister on the spot over settlements. >> as far as settlements, i would like to see you hold back on settlements for a little bit. we'll work something out, but i would like to see a deal be made. it might be a bigger and better deal than people in this room
