our tim barber. tim, this is really an incredible story. reporter: a neighbor smelled smoke. he called 911. what happened next is the reason 77-year-old woman is recovering tonight here at the hospital. >> it's not the movies here. you're thinking in the back of your head, i don't know if i'm coming out. reporter: officers j.p. and william were done for the day when they got one last call. breathe, couldn't see. didn't really know what was going on. reporter: northeast washington full of smoke. >> we gotta get in there. that's just the bottom line. they broke a window. >> thick smoke, just covered, all the windows and everything. you could smell it. >> we would have been in trouble in another couple of minutes. >> we both were screaming, lady, where are you at? couldn't see nothing. reporter: she was passed out on the kitchen floor. >> i saw a light, so i started dragging her to the light. out asoth carried her fast as possible. reporter: the 77-year-old was rushed to the

window, to let out the smoke, but she couldn't move. reporter: the daughter-in-law told us she was cooking when she had a stroke. calledank a neighbor who 911. >> thank god he was home and smelled hope. reporter: and these officers for risking their life to save another. >> i just wanna say thank you so much! >> we knew there was serious consequences going in there. person's life in there. we knew we had to get her out. just glad she's okay. reporter: tim barber, abc 7 news. >> and we have more breaking news tonight from baltimore, where there's a big firefight there.n this is in a vacant warehouse in woodbury area. no reports of injuries or word on a possible cause. but we will keep you posted.

whoever fired right into traffic. bullets flying right on route 50 in cheverly. arethe three people injured expected to be okay. tom has the latest on the investigation happening right now. reporter: after 7:30, a truck shot the car that had been up away, and eastbound route 50 was finally reopened. but it had been shut down for the entire evening rush hour. >> route 50 is obviously a very highway, especially around 3:00 when this took place. reporter: when police arrived on carscene, they found a absolutely riddled with bullets. camera saw 13 places where they ripped into the car. and police say there were actually more shots than that, blastedthe windows were out as well. although all three men inside hit, incredibly, police say none of their injuries are life-threatening. >> we could have had a much different situation. reporter: the shot-up car led to the unusual situation of police doing an
