5-year-old boy killed in this fire. earlier today, fairfax county fire officials saying the cause of the fire was inappropriate use of a lighter by the 5-year-old boy. the fire started in the garage of the home in lorton. officials say it did spread fast. it started just after 5:00. it started in the garage area of the home. fire officials don't know what was lit on fire by the lighter but they say likely some kind of debris that can be found in a typical garage. two firefighters who live in the neighborhood, one is retired and the other on his day off rushed to the home to try to save the child but they could not get in the garage as the fire and the smoke was overwhelming. those firefighters with two adults that live in the house were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. two dogs were saved from the home but two dogs died inside with three birds. following the death of the 5-year-old boy, neighbors say this is heartbreaking. >> it is. it'

forever. >> i can't imagine what the mother is going through now. >> a tight-knit community of fairfax county. it's definitely hit very hard. jeff: as you look at the home, you can see it is a total loss. the windows are blown out throughout the home. the debris in the driveway cleared out of the garage following the fire. coming up at 5:00, we'll have more with the heroic efforts by the firefighters who tried to save the young boy. we will speak to a neighbor who knew the young boy well. say he was a fun-loving very kind boy that will be so greatly missed. live in lorton, jeff goldberg, abc7 news. jonathan: heartbreaking, jeff. thank you. this just in the newsroom. the officer that was involved in this crash, the one caught on the dash cam here, boom, right there. he has been taken off patrol by fairfax police. the wreck happened saturday on leesburg pike while an officer was responding to a disorderly call.

he just slammed in the side of a minivan. the officer was going above the speed limit when the crash happened. right now no charges on either party being filed. but it's not clear at this point who is at fault. the officer's dash cam video system was damaged beyond repair. michelle: developing in the district, two people shot on alabama avenue southeast. one of them critically injured. the two men were alert when police and paramedics got there after 10:00. no description of the gunman. as soon as we get one we will share it with you. jonathan: house fire in bristol destroyed a family home. everyone made it out safely. look at the video. it burned through the top floor damage estimate is $300,000 and it could be higher than that. this dry weather we have been having now really is taking its toll. look at this. from skytrak7 you can see the smoke below. this was montgomery county fire crews working on a brush fire on

today. no word on how it started but one of a few fires we have seen in the area because it's so dry out there. what we are in need of is rain. the question is will we see any before the winter is over? stormwatch7's chief meteorologist doug hill joining us. we could use a drenching. doug: we will get rain before winter is over but will it be enough lain to do any good? at 4:30 i have a special report on why we are seeing the brush fires here. in the meantime, all we can offer is showers tomorrow. right now cloudiness and sunshine in spots. maybe fog lateer tonight. most of the rain we are seeing is stretching from west to east and south of the metro area. we won't see rain but as the warmer air moves in overnight and tomorrow we will see the areas of fog developing. something to keep an eye on there. temperatures in the 60's. 65 in warrenton. 61 in college park. through the evening the temperatures will drop and hold in the 50's overnight. morning fog nd

the races. back to the 70's tomorrow. alison: thank you very much. one year ago, d.c. started contracting private ambulances to help improve response times. bureau chief sam ford takes a look at what has changed. good and bad. sam: after a year of mixing public and private ambulances to handle d.c.'s 170,000 calls for service, the mayor and fire chief this morning called a news conference to declare victory of the decision to do it this way. >> we are seeing an improvement in unit availability. we are seeing improvement in the response times. sam: the way it works if a regular d.c. ambulance arrives and determine the patient is in dire straights it's off to the hospital. but if not, they wait to free them up without lights to transport to the hospital. >> we have progress to report to you. sam:fy officials say there is more time for training, repairing the ambulances and the response time improve by a

they estimate half to three-quarters of the patients don't need to go to the emergency room at all. today they announced a new program coming soon. call to 911 may get you switched to a nurse who on the phone will tell you, you just need a clinic. >> they will decide which outpatient setting they should go for the same-day medical care and they will patch in the same day transport for the individual. sam: transport may mean a cab ride. the plan is to get 16 of the private clinics like unity health ready to take in patients who today would go to a hospital. in northwest washington, sam ford, abc7 news. jonathan: the annual conservative action conference is kicking off this afternoon at national harbor and it brings out some of the biggest name in the conservative politics world. among them, all-star line-up from the white house, top adviser steve

priebus. and trump is booked for friday morning. michelle: a government official saying the trump administration will revoke guidelines that say transgender students should be allow to use locker room and bathrooms that match their gender identity. that was put in place by president obama this past may. the jewish cemetery vandalized in missouri is getting a big boost. a group of muslim activists raised more than $80,000 to help with repairs to nearly 200 headstones. the goal was to raise $20,000 by the end of march. they shattered that mark in three hours. jonathan: does an adult have a right to visit his or her sick parent? apparently not automatically in maryland. maryland bureau whee brad bell has the high profile fight for change. this comes from the late casey casem's children. >> they were stars.

remedy the problem that the women were talking about and why it failed to get through the general assembly last year. in annapolis, brad bell, abc7 news. alison: thank you. see you at 5:00. meanwhile, a montgomery county man accused of killing his own child. plus a pitbull puppy. the incident happened months apart. this is a story you will see only on abc7. our montgomery county reporter kevin lewis outside circuit court in rockville where the man is scheduled for trial later this year. kevin? kevin: kevin: that is roger miller jr. last month they arrested the 20-year-old for allegedly shaking his 5-month-old baby boy to death. paramedics were called to the apartment complex in the white oaks section of silver spring and found the infant gasping for air and bleeding from the nose and vomiting. he

now fast forward to this month and police charged miller for beating his 10-week-old pitbull puppy to death. they found the dog named miol lying along -- milo lying along the street. it was 23 degrees outside and milo was spasms. his body temp was so low the staff couldn't get a reading. doctors ultimately euthanized milo because his suffering was so severe. miller's girlfriend later told police the 20-year-old repeatedly kicked and punched milo because the puppy wouldn't respond to its name. >> every time i turn on the news myself, you know, somebody is killing this person. their wife, husband, children. it doesn't matter. it is sad. it's really sad. >> miller is behind bars awaiting trial for the death of his infant son.

announcer: you're watching "abc7 news at 4:00". on your side. jonathan: we have seen nice weather but it has been dry. we have seen a number of brush fires this week. michelle: a lot of them. stormwatch7's chief meteorologist doug hill tells us, it is no surprise given the drought conditions across the region. doug: monday's pop-up fire along prince george's county showed how quickly the dry leaves, underbrush and degrees can ignite and spread. a fire on sugar loaf mountain along the montgomery county/frederick county line was

lightning strikes for majority of the wildfires in the u.s. most brush fires are started by sparks, carelessness with cigarettes or outdoor burning or by arson. we are below rainfall and that with the warm temperatures and gusty wind set the stage for brush fires. that will only diminish if we see substantial widespread rain. that is not likely soon. to give you background on the deficit, this goes back to the last six months where 8.5 inches below precipitation. this will change. sooner or later we will get a soaking rain. 50 tonight with fog. 72 tomorrow after the morning fog and afternoon sun. friday will feel i

audio from cell phone will help figure out who killed three girls on hiking trip. >> what police call double homicide. the voice saying, "down the hill" that police believe may have belonged to man that is the main suspect in the murder of the girls. they revealed both are from the cell phone when they dropped her off for afternoon hike. an hour later they never showed up. >> this made me sick going to the bridge thinking a friend of mine died there. >> investigators are begging the public to help them identify the man by the picture or those three words.
