this morning on "world news now," conservatives setting the course. the trump administration taking a break from all those tough questions in d.c., facing a friendlier crowd at the annual cpac gathering in the suburbs, we're going to take you to the conference to see what he everyone's really trying to get their hands on ahead of the president's big speech. >> outrage in the streets overnight as the trump administration's rollback of transgender for students is met with anger and uncertainty. protests are demanding action including caitlyn jenner calling the situation a disaster. >> new this half hour, the explosive incident that's left a community outraged. >> the new video that shows what led to an off-duty police officer firing his weapon after an altercation with a group of teens. we hear from the young man involved.

the president making it clear he wants the u.s. to be the world's dominant nuclear power. in a new interview, the president said he would like to see a world without nuclear arms but he said if there are going to be nukes, then the u.s. is going to be at the top of the pack. we should point out russia currently has more nuclear warheads than the u.s. but both countries have more than enough to destroy the world. the president raised eyebrows when he referred to the deportation of undocumented immigrants as a military operation. press secretary sean spicer later explains that the president was using that phrase to mean, precision. homeland security chief john kelley traveling in mexico took a tougher stance stating clearly there will be no mass deportations and no use of military force during immigration operations. >> kelly made those comments while in mexico city with secretary of state rex tillerson by his side. they were meeting with the mexican president and his cabinet trying to alleviate

their concerns over new u.s. immigration policies, a task made tougher after the president's remarks. new protests against president trump's rollback of transgender protections in public schools. demonstrators outside new york's landmark stone wall inn chanted and held signs in support of transgender youth. the inn is considered the birthplace of the gay kivl rights movement. the roll back gives power back to states and school districts to decide the issue. >> i think it's not a question of whether it's a civil right, whether it's appropriately addressed. as i noted it's appropriately addressed at the state level. and long time republican and transgender activist caitlyn jenner is speaking out about the policy reversal asking president trump to give her a call. jenner tweeting to the president, "from one republican to another, this is a disaster." the former olympian had a message of support for transgender youth. >> new questions about ivanka

she had a seat at the table with manufacturing ceos at the white house. sources say she recently hosted republican members of congress to discuss a child care tax proposal and paid maternity leave. it was a big issue that she discussed on the campaign trail. such a policy meeting is considered unusual for the child of a president with no formal role in the administration. and we do have breaking news right now about a new police shooting, this one not far from capitol hill. detail taz still sketchy. but two d.c. police officers were shot and are now hospitalized. we're told their wounds are not life-threatening but a male suspect was shot and killed. the officers were responding to a report of shots fired. there were three other shooting incidents earlier in another part of the nation's capital. >> and we're also keeping an eye on the severe storm system in the midwest right now. take a look at the radar. that storm is intense from idaho to michigan. the snow and wind will pick up and develop into a blizzard later today. this is a storm system that wreaked havoc in northern california and has already

claimed lives as it moves east. dangerous conditions on i-80 near salt lake city. wow, trucks getting out and catching fire. the driver did not survive. and a more than 200-mile section of the highway in wyoming was closed because the snow made travel a little bit to you dangerous. >> this morning, it will be a dangerous commute, as well for those in the upper plains with blizzard conditions for most of the region. by tonight, the area will have gotten 6 to 12 inches of snow. to the south centered around indiana, temperatures will be much warmer and the danger is from damaging winds and hail possibly, even tornadoes. >> to the west coast now, we're learning new details about the confrontation in anaheim, california, that led to the an off-duty police officer firing had is weapon. new video shows that explosive encounter between an lapd officer and a 13-year-old boy. the incident sparking outrage and protests. the officer claims the teen
