moved out. now comes the cleanup and for thousands of people the wait to get power back on. >> we have a team of reporters scattered throughout the area today and we'll get live reports in just a moment. but first the latest on the forecast with storm watch 7's chief meteorologist doug hill. he's had a busy day. doug? doug: obviously busy. things are quieting down now as the heaviest storms have moved off to the east. no advisorys warnings are in effect for the area. we have a little area of rain especially south of the city this evening and heavier downpours and gusty winds but not the sort we think that will cause any damage. all part of a powerful cold front through the area. what was really interesting is we had severe thunderstorm warnings up all day and a watch for storms that really didn't have any thunder or lightning. it was a line of extremely heavy rain and very high winds across the area. we had a wind gust reported at marine corps base quantico at 78 miles per hour. we'll see temperatures continue to drop this evening but slowly because the cold front

we'll be in the 60's. by the time we get overnight we will turn cooler with strong, gusty winds, temperatures in the 40's by tomorrow morning. this after hitting 80 degrees today. the wind gusts looking on our storm watch 7 future cast will be in the 25 to 30-mile-per-hour range overnight early tomorrow and then stay very breezy throughout the day with a fair amount of sunshine. the winds finally dying down tomorrow night. all these little blue dots you see, the dark blue, are wind damage reports, and the lighter blue are high wind gusts about 129 as we can count them through the mid-atlantic area reported so far and no surprise with the high winds. one of the reports is in kensington we received a report of a wind gust there that was in the upper 50's to about 58 miles per hour. that is a really strong wind gust but very typical of what we dealt with around the area. kensington is where we find abc 7 meteorologist josh knight who was out during the height of the storm chasing the wind and found the effects there in

kensington. josh: absolutely, doug. and around a lot of the area you'll see things like this. this fell down in many places. one of the biggest trees i've been able to find down is here in kensington. we're on parkwood court. you can see the tree looks pretty dead. it was in the back yard before the storms moved through, fell through the roof there, and and down ont yard the hill. the home owners didn't want to talk on camera but one neighbor told us this was not a unusual thunderstorm. >> yeah. it was like a hurricane wind for a moment, and as it rushed through the court and the wires were shaking we heard this crash. it wasn't raining or thundering. we saw the tree fall into the house. josh: now, here's the really good news. i guess kind of the scary news is one of the home owners was actually inside when the tree came down but we did get a chance to chat with her. she said

the kids are understandably a little shaken up. in kensington, meteorologist josh knight. back to you guys. >> thank you. right now there are about 14,000 people who are without power in our area. >> that's right. montgomery county saw some of the worst of the storms, which has left behind a real mess as you just saw for some people to deal with today. >> let's keep our team coverage going today. kevin is in gaithersburg. kevin: this neighborhood had a tree come down, power lines , which down with it started a fire. i'm standing in burnt grass. the remarkable thing, take a look at this. a power line which has been cut so there is no. a crater in the middle of this road and it runs at least a foot deep and almost kind of mimiced a volcano if you will. the crater in the roadway, the asphalt that burned sort of

looked like lava and is still smoldering at this hour. i can tell you it does not smell good. pretty potent asphalt and plastic smell to it. you come up the roadway here and this is a scene we've seen so many times before following severe weather. we have a guy here treeg to clear some debris. up here folks had chain saws out earlier and now they're just picking up what they cut off of the tree that was blocking this roadway to their homes. these folks tell us that they get out here when the power went off and saw the roadway on fire. earlier this afternoon a tree brought down power lines and trapped a car with a person inside of it. we have video of that scene. happened around 1:30 this afternoon. river road and seneca road is the nearest

the roadway was shut down. >> all right. kevin, thank you. we're having some issues with his audio. we also want to remind you that we will continue to track this weather throughout our newscast this evening. you can stay up to date on the changing forecast right on your phone any time. just go to wjla.com/text and sign up right there to have severe weather alerts. jonathan? >> another story we're following tonight, a crime alert in fairfax county. police say a woman was sexually assaulted as she of moving out of her apartment. we have the story from annandale. >> residents of this very large town home and apartment complex in annandale nervous tonight. this after a woman who was moving out yesterday tells authorities she encountered a man in the parking area who offered to help her. she said he seems suspicious so she told him no, went back into her unit to continue packing up. she says about an hour later the same man came in through an open door, implied he had a knife, ordered her to take her clothing off, and began to sexual assault her.

scream, came to help. authorities say the man then turned on the 37-year-old woman. the neighbor grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the ground, and then ran off. residents of the complex describe what this has done to them. >> i have to lock the door properly. right now i'm in fear. how can i go out. right? >> as far as the suspect, very little to go on other than he was thin and spoke with an african accent. abc 7 news. jonathan: thank you. d.c. police now investigating a shooting in southeast. investigators say a man was shot in a vehicle at wheeler road and upsal street just before 11:00 this morning. the police chief says the gunman that took off was chased briefly by an officer who happened to be in the area at that time. the victim was said to be unconscious but breathing when he was taken to the hospital. >> a demonstration was held in rockville today taking a stand against the recent attack on the jewish communi

bombs was held across from the charles e. smith jewish day school. it was one of three jewish centers in our area to recently receive bomb threats. the demonstrators and school community stand against the hate. >> it's about standing against hatred. this is about who we are as a community. who we are as a country. it's about not letting this not letting it happen again. >> there have been 60 similar threats across the country since early january. >> when the cherry blossoms might peak. the white house weighs in on kellyanne conway and the police chase takes a dukes of hazard turn. the chain of events that sent this car going airborne. jonathan: we're continuing to follow the severe storms which

wore white in support of women's rights. white is historically a symbolic color for the women's suffrage movement. meanwhile, the white house has concluded kellyanne conway was acting without nefarious motive when she plugged iva in. ka trump's products in a tv interview. the letter from the white house makes no mention of plans for disciplinary action. we all know president trump made the jump from tv to the white house. could oprah winfrey be next? she said in an interview with bloomberg that she is considering a presidential run. winfrey said she used to think you needed government experience to be elected president but she added that's all changed now that trump has been elected. jonathan: you do need experience on the roadways especially during traffic. it's the wednesday evening hump day ride home. >> well,

experience necessary but this afternoon we're experiencing a recovery period after strong winds and heavy rains made their way through the area. lots of reports of down trees. some incidents and as you can imagine volume early as most folks may be trying to head home to see what the house may be looking like. certainly volume delays picking up now. outer loop through prince george's, an earlier accident near richie marlboro still tying up the ride leaving the woodrow wilson bridge. 66, here for the ride home through centreville westbound between 29 and centreville and the car rest area we have one now currently blocking a single right lane. we did have two right lanes blocked. still seeing heavy volume in 50 and fair oaks as a result. also slowing earlier from merrifield from 495 due to an accident on the ramp to eastbound 66 from the inner loop of 495. we just cleared one as well northbound 395, fidge -- fidge, back to better and moving at

the district. in d.c. we have an issue outstanding. canal road is still closed at foxall. you can see yellow tape closing off foxal at canal road at the intersection. you can see the tree trimming truck has made its way to the area. there was an accident. a tree fell as a result and we have lots going on there. no word on when it may reopen. earlier from folks as well through parts of southeast maybe trying to avoid the beltway were being diverted eastbound pennsylvania avenue at minnesota for a report of a downed pole in the roadway. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. to help deal with today's storms we offer some nice weather thoughts. we're talking about the cherry blossoms. >> it's just the best time of the year in the city. now it seems like the mild winter could mean they're going to be blooming a lot earlier than normal. what are the dates, rich? rich: yeah, guys. check it out. those dates are march 14 through march 17. you can

buds beginning to pop out there and the little red florettes part of the petals there. now, we came down to the tidal basin, a section of the tidal basin where the very first cherry trees were planted on march 27, 1912. we have video for you. 3,000 cherry theresa gift from the japanese government to the district. only about 100 of the original trees remain. for blossom fans this is going to be epic. one of the earliest if not the earliest blooms in memory. peak bloom happens when 70% of the blossoms are in bloom. this year it is happening on st. patrick's day so it should be quite the party. >> they're beautiful and the history of them, they were a gift from the people of japan and this is a beautiful thing. they live on. as the years go on they get bigger and more beautiful. >> the cherry blossom festival attracts

every year. coming up at 5:00 we will hear from a young man who has brought his parents over from china just to see the cherry blossom festival. reporting live, richard reeve, abc 7 news. >> thank you. if you got caught out there today, my gosh. rain was coming down sideways. jonathan: i walked the dog at 10:00. it was 75 degrees. felt beautiful. then a few hours later it was just gusting. doug: the rain cgwas moving 50 miles an hour. you could go from sunshine and go inside for 20 minutes, dark as night and, boom. it hits. they were thunderstorms without thunder largely. we picked up maybe three lightning strikes across the whole line, too. generally just rain squalls with high winds. man, were they something else. i want to start with a look at our time lapse from national harbor. you have to look closely because they only rained heavily for two minutes with the high wind blowing through. see if you can spot when the skies darken and then splash it's gone and skies clearing and now back to cloudy skies again. that is the kind of day we had.

but in that brief period of time the winds did quite a bit of damage and the wind gusts were really high. many over 60 miles per hour. the highest one we've seen yet was reported at marine corps base quantico with a wind gust there at 78 miles per hour. hurricane force. it's 65 at quantico now. 70 leesburg. 69 reagan national. 69 in baltimore. we're waiting for the official report from the airport. inc. we hit 80 degrees there today. that ties the record for the first of march. windy tonight. more showers. the threat of severe weather tonight will be south and southwest of most of our viewing area. it will turn colder. the cold front hasn't come in yet. winds are still out of the southwest. the colder air is still back here with the front. you ths long, skinny line of storms some producing tornadoes or at least tornado warnings but we don't expect that to be an impact here. we have a severe thunderstorm watch from north carolina south into northern south carolina. the showers and storms are moving to the northeast the whole while the band is slowly sinking

at the totch the line washington will definitely get more rain. maybe a few heavier downpours and wind gusts but gusts in the 30, 35-mile-per-hour range, not in the hurricane force range. our future cast shows windy conditions. clearing overnight. snow showers to the north. lake effect stuff through the day tomorrow. we'll have a lot of sunshine here. temperatures only in the low to mid 50's. then on friday morning it looks as though a little alberta clipper will come pay a visit and that could produce periods of light snow in the morning. we don't expect impacts in the area, psychological, but nothing really because the ground is so warm and the air temperatures will be above freezing. that will be an issue. gusty winds and flurries in the afternoon before skies clear out for the weekend. here is a look at the next 10 days. more ups and downs of course. what else? 54 tomorrow. 45 with a little wintry stuff in the morning. flurries in the afternoon. to the weekend, lots of sunshine but chilly. look at friday night's low and saturday night's low. 24 is the coldest it's been in a long time but we'll recover to 54 degrees on sunday. ok

doug: the rain has ended in the metro area right now but there is more in the southwest moving in the general direction. don't be a bit surprised to see more rain later this evening and gusty winds. not from a cold front but from a surge of high pressure behind the front and the national weather service has just issued an expansive wind advisory in effect from 10:00 tonight. actually starts at 8:00 to the west but the metro area starts 10:00 tonight through 10:00 tomorrow morning. winds could gust at times maybe close to 45 or 50 miles per hour. again, no storminess. just pressure. air pressure. but the wind gusts will be significant. right now we have gusts at last report

29 miles per hour manassas. 25 miles per hour in fredericksburg. if you're just joining us the big wind was down south today when the marine corps base quantico reported a wind gust of 78 miles per hour. that's hurricane force. doppler radar, no watches. no warnings. the remaining severe thunderstorms in delaware and southern jersey. everybody else has quieted down. plenty of rain as you see and notice the motion to the east-northeast. a lot of the area especially south of washington will get more rain and then we'll get the gusty winds. this is what future cast says the steady, heavy rain just south of the metro area late tonight moves out of the picture. skies will brighten but then we have winds and wind gusts. that's really been the big story today with the showers across the area. no thunder or lightning but plenty of strong winds and damage reports. we'll head north to montgomery county, maryland in kensington. abc 7 meteorologist josh knight has been tracking the storm's effects and has a big one right behind him. josh? josh: yeah.

this is some of the worst damage that we've seen across the area. on our way here there's a lot inches in the road and that sort of thing but if you walk with me you can see that this house, the tree was in the back yard earlier today. came crashing down when the wind gusts moved through here and broke through the roof and now you can see a lot of it laying in the front yard. even just from that pressure when that came down you can see the damage done to the actual window right in the front of the house. now, we do have some good news to report here. hile there was somebody inside when this happened they are okay. everybody is okay. they do have places to stay. that is the plus side. we've seen crews taking looks at the different amount of work and trying to get an idea of what happens next. live in kensington, everybody is safe but certainly a little bit of a mess. to continue our team coverage i want to send it over to jeff goldberg in stafford county. jeff: well, what we're seeing in stafford is sort of sporadic damage throughout the

they did have damage, an industrial park on nelm circle in the southern part of the county. a guy is trying to fix the roof damage as a result of the wind that came through. this is some of the remnants from the storm damage that came through from the roof top, some of the stuff they've been clearing out, the debris here as a result of the damage from all the winds. let's show you some video we shot in the last hour or so. this is on route one. you see power crews working on downed power lines on route one there in the stafford county area. we're told that 12,000 people are currently without power in the northern virginia region. 6,000 of those in the fredericksburg and stafford county area. at the peak, 30,000 people were impacted by this storm. now, you take a look at some photos we got. this is from the harbor neighborhood also in stafford county. you have trees down, trees blocking the road. a trampoline flipped over, and trees in yards.

so certainly a bit of a mess for people living in that area. back here live at the industrial park you can see this aluminum it looks like came off the shed over there. we're at least 20 feet away. maybe 30 from where this aluminum might have flown off so certainly those winds really came through and pushed things in a pretty serious direction. however, we are happy to report no major injuries and no major damage here in stafford county as a result of this storm. power crews will be working all throughout the night to restore power for people throughout the area. live in stafford county, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. jonathan: jeff, thanks very much. we getter idea of how widespread the damage is from our viewers because a lot of times you post stuff to your facebook page or put it up on ours or maybe our twitter feed. we keep in close contact on social media to find out what is happening. a lot of folks are getting on there with good pictures. >> absolutely. you know what? if you take a look at this, those

from college park. a lot of people showed us what it looked like just before the storm hit. this is what it looked like over annapolis harbor. then of course the rain. look at this video. unfortunately, he said he left his rain jacket in the car because he didn't know it would hit that fast. look at this video. you can really see the wind here. it was so strong that it was like being in a wind tunnel. you can see it just opening some of the doors over there. of course afterward, damage. we have this photo. this is over in south stafford. this is part of a barn. it looks like part of the roof of a barn. this is loudoun county. and tim showed us what happened to his umbrella, completely came off because of that wind. >> thank you. daylight shedding light on the devastating tornado that struck perryville, missouri overnight. at least one person is dead after a tornado hit the town 80 miles south of st. louis along i-55. emergency managers reported cars were thrown off

and won't be so bad. we'll go live tonight to the huntington metro station with when it begins. reporter: well, michelle, if only we were so lucky. it will begin this weekend on saturday. take a look at the huntington metro station and you see folks filing in now. it will be at a much slower pace come this weekend lasting for 37 days. if you take a look here they're notifying folks of alerts currently. also on that board an alert for the upcoming safe track surge 13. during the latest save track surge yellow and blue lines will operate much less frequently. particularly at stations south of the reagan national airport station. trains will share the same track through the work zone so during the first phase starting saturday blue and yellow line trains will run only every 24 minutes even at rush hour between the braddock road station and out to huntington and van dorn stations. the second phase will impact only the yellow line between king street and

cleaning up after a strong line of storms moved through fast. storm watch 7 chief meteorologist doug hill is tracking what's coming after that front. doug? doug: well, more winds coming this way, larry, but not directly related to the area we saw earlier on today where that was a real mess. we have wind gusts 50, 60 miles per hour. in fact, we had wind gusts, top wind gusts in the area 78 miles per hour at the marine corps base quantico. things have quieted down now. we have more rain to get through this evening. a few heavier downpours closer to interstate 64 interchange. however, the area is feeding moisture off the cold front still way back to the west through ohio. we'll stay breezy and mild but later tonight with the showers coming through and then the front we'll have a big spike in winds again but not from any storms. just from a surge of air pressure following the cold front. a large area late tonight through 10:00 tomorrow morning under a wind advisory. winds could gust 45 to 50 miles per hour but skies will be clearing overnig
