one of the home owners was in the basement when this happened. didn't even realize it happened until she went upstairs and saw it through the roof into the bathroom. the great news is she was okay and everybody is okay and the family has someplace to stay nearby. in kensington, really seeing pretty wild winds today gusting close to 60 miles an hour when the storms moved through. now things are quieting down and people are starting to do some of the cleanup. in kensington, back inside to you guys. >> thanks. a power line doing that. burning a hole right into the pavement. that is some crater. this is out in gaithers bug. there were a number of lines downed by the storm this afternoon. some came down on their own and others knocked over by trees. we also got this image. the roof of a barn straddling power lines in loudoun county. that is one of the reasons at the peak of the storm some 50,000 customers found themselves without power. we just checked and the number is a lot close tower 18,000. between the three major pow

companies. northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg is in fredericksburg right now. jeff, this was some storm. it was quick but it did a lot of damage in that short period of time. >> it sure did. in fact, right now we're feeling heavy winds pick up again in the last five mints or so outside of this home in fredericksburg where you can see the power of the storm. the top of the tree sliced right off. the top of this tree sliced off as well. thankfully, neither of them went into a home. the tree is still standing just a few miles from where we are standing right now. more signs of the storm. the storm came through fast and the cleanup started right after. strong winds sending aluminum flying. some of it into trees. from this storming facility on nelm circle in southern stafford county. trees also toppled over from the wind. just north along route 1, dominion virginia crews hard at work restoring power after winds knocked down transmission lines cutting off power to thousands across

in the harbor neighborhood, fallen trees blocking roads, blocking driveways. even a trampoline got flipped. you see the siding that came off that house here in fredericksburg. certainly some cleanup and repairs still to go. according to dominion virginia, crews will be out working all night to restore the power. thankfully, though, no injuries from this storm. live in fredericksburg, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. >> thank you. let's check in now with storm watch 7 chief meteorologist doug hill for what comes next. doug: high winds but not because of the line of storms but because of high pressure. rapidly coming in late tonight behind a cold front. look at the little dots. you see the dark ones are all reports of excessive wind gusts and we have dozens and dozens of others that represent wind damage. the highest gust reported in the entire area today south at marine corps base quantico with a gust of 78 miles per hour. our story now we still

some rain south of the metro area. that will continue to push to the east and southeast. an isolated shower possible. most of the rain to the south and staying south of the metro area. this is part of the larger system that extends to the carolinas all the way to north georgia with numbers of severe thunderstorm warnings in effect but we will miss that. the cold front is back here along the appalachians. once it pushes through tonight the barometric pressure will start to rise rapidly and will drive winds that have initiated this. so wind advisory in effect from 10:00 tonight to 10:00 tomorrow morning. the metro area. starts a couple hours earlier. 8:00 p.m. along interstate 81 and points to the west. lots of wind in the forecast. but overnight we'll see clearing skies, 40 to 46 degrees. the gusty winds will be with us tomorrow. through the overnight and through tomorrow morning. gusting at times over 40 miles per hour. believe it or not, maybe some snowflakes in our friday forecast. what a crazy winter. michelle? michelle: all right. thanks for keeping us up to date on all of it, doug. you know the same system that moved through our area spawned

about 4:00 this afternoon olice arrested 20-year-old ahmed. we have new video of a drive by shooting in southwest d.c. a week ago. two men are running down the sidewalk as a car slowly drives by. you can see it in the video, the yellow one. two different cameras caught the scene. one person was hurt but survived. so far right now no arrests have been made. >> a racketeering scandal has rocked the baltimore police department. a federal indictment accuses seven officers of stealing, filing false affidavits, and lying about overtime. prosecutors say one officer is also charged with distributing drugs. according to reports this all happened while the department of justice was investigating baltimore police in the wake of freddie gray's death. >> part of the reality of reform is looking within our organization and pulling the covers back and seeing who is betraying

community. >> the officers are in f.b.i. custody and have been suspended without pay. the u.s. attorney said five federal cases had to be dropped because some of the indicted officers were involved in the investigation. >> a former secret service agent admits he was sexting with what he thought was a teenage girl while on duty at the white house but the person on the other end of the explicit texts was actually a police detective. lee moore pleaded guilty today to charges from that case and cases in three other states. moore was fired after his arrest. a sentencing date now has not yet been set. >> seeking to build momentum from his first address to congress president trump hosted a working lunch with republican leaders at the white house. no democrats were invited. before hitting the meeting the senate confirmed montana congressman ryan zinke as secretary of the interior. he'll be sworn in at any moment. meanwhile, tomorrow the senate is expected to confirm dr. ben

>> if you haven't seen this video yet, watch this. here we go. that wasn't a movie. this was the real deal down in louisiana. this is the final moments of a police chase. what happens here is the driver of the vehicle was actually the passenger. they get pulled over by police for speeding. the driver gets out to talk with officers. that's when the passenger jumps into the driver's seat, freaks out, and races off. they had a barricade ahead. he decided i'm going to avoid the barricade and went airborne. he landed on top of a car and there was a woman inside. >> i saw the underside of a vehicle coming at me. right at my face. and i went to the right sitting in my car. >> and that's the car she was in. the toyota right there. she had cat like reflexes. she was in the driver's seat and she leaned into the passenger seat. that's the only part of her car that wasn't crushed. as for the driver, well, now he has a shiny new pair

handcuffs and was taken away by police. >> now more shocking video. this one also starts with a traffic stop where you see an officer talking to the man he pulled over. then the driver got spooked. >> bad idea. bad. >> all right. so that was the view from the officer's body camera. his dash board camera was also rolling. the officer wasn't seriously hurt and jumped back in through his car to give chase. at one point the driver dumps his passenger into a parking lot and that's when police decided the chase had to end and spun the van out. officers then smashed the windshield and arrested the driver. not going to get away with that one. >> wow. updating a tragic story d.c. rescue crews now have recovered the body of a worker killed in a trench collapse just yesterday in northwest d.c. the man was working in the trench when thousands of pounds of soil just crushed him. crews had stopped their search today because of all of the rain. they finally found the man's body

responded saying he is ashamed and is asking for leadership lp. >> well, there is a push by some students in the dorms at the university of maryland for a program letting them ride metro as much as they want for free. that is if all students pay a mandatory fee whether they ride it or not. so that is the rub. we'll take a closer look. >> umv's residence hall association representing the students living on campus voted 25-14 tuesday, passing a resolution in support of a new mandatory student fee. first reported by the diamond back umv student newspaper $130 per semester would give dorm residents unlimited rides on metro. >> this is a real, true student initiative. >> matt o'brien is the association's transportation chair. >> a $130 fee per semester can be scary at first but it is just a great opportunity and just ease of access really. >> many students seem to like the idea. >> if you have an internship or co-op in d.c. or you just

a nice deal. >> that would make me go to d.c. more often. >> a similar unlimited ride program is already in effect at american university called the university pass. maatta says it is a metro initiative offered to all the colleges and universities in the region. some students don't see the point and they already pay nearly a thousand dollars in fees each semester. >> people already pay a lot of money for schools, for books, and all of that. >> it won't cost like $135 if you're just going to d.c. every once in a while. >> a university spokes person emphasize this had proposal is still very preliminary requiring approval from the student committee and the board of regents. but proponents are optimistic. >> this is step one. >> they say there is also support for expanding the program beyond the residents hall to the entire student body. in college park, abc 7 news. >> we're talking about metro. how about this? the next safe track surge starts saturday and

the trains will be single tracking on the yellow and blue lines around the clock during the first phase of surge 13. trains will only run every 24 minutes between braddock road and huntington stations. during the second phase, the yellow line will be impacted between king street and huntington. >> cherry blossoms by that time. the show on the tidal blossom could begin earlier than ever. the national park service predicts peak blooms where the cherry blossoms will be between march 14 and 17. the earliest peak ever is march 15. we beat that by a day. of course abc 7 is a proud sponsor of the national cherry blossom festival. >> you see the buds right there blowing around. back to our storm watch coverage and look at the tree. look at the video. that is not the camera moving but the whole tree moving. the storms that were blowing through today were rocking around. mother nature doing her best to unnerve the eagles. the eagle cam showed the

it through the storm just fine. the two eggs are doing just fine. the president and first lady were doing just fine as well. they just rode out the storm. that's what they do. they build really good nests. >> great foundation. that thing is going to hold up. >> you can tell when the eagles are around because their nests are huge. >> the worst of it over for us? doug: yeah the most intense winds and extremely heavy rain. winds will start ramping back up later this evening and overnight tomorrow not from a line of storms but just atmospheric event where high pressure starts to build rapidly and we see it quite often. an advisory is up. let's start with the top wind gusts. 78-mile-per-hour wind gusts at quantico this afternoon. crazy stuff. still 67 degrees there. cold front has not arrived yet. had a wind gust at 65 miles per hour in germantown. 62 at joint base andrews and 61-mile-per-hour gust in king george county. everybody still in the 60's and the cold front still to the west.

the line of storms came in we hit 80 degrees at reagan national. that tied the record for the date. no record set at dulles or bwi, thurgood marshall, but definitely the feel of may in the air before the storms blew in. our line of storms has pretty much moved out over the atlantic. this is a new area now developing. we've been watching during the afternoon. very heavy storms southwest of richmond through the carolinas. severe thunderstorm watch there. numerous thunderstorm warnings in effect but it looks like that motion will all stay south of the metro area. obviously raining in southern maryland northern neck. that will continue to be the case a few more hours but the cold front is right here, the leading edge of the cold front. when that sweeps through tonight our winds will ramp up and we'll see wind gusts at times 40 to 50 miles per hour. our future cast shows by 8:00 tonight still some rain over southern maryland northern neck but that should be the end of it. a few showers over the mountains as the cold front comes in but as the winds switch to the west it'll pretty much dry up the rain. we'll have very strong winds developing in the overnight hours with clearing and because of that and wind advisory posted it goes into effect at 10:0p.

runs through 10:00 a.m. it does start a little bit earlier. closer to the cold front at 8:00 p.m. to the west. our future cast shows a bright and sunny day tomorrow. temperatures in the 50's but strong winds. even winds diminish a bit and still gusty through the afternoon hours. then we get through thursday night and friday morning. air will be colder. there is a chance there could be snow around the area for a while friday morning. we think any accumulations will be grassy areas because the ground is so warm. it is something we'll keep an eye on because we've seen so many surprises meteor logically this winter. i won't take any bets on anything. that will be the focus tomorrow. meantime the next seven days look like this. 54 tomorrow. a chance of some morning snow friday. breezy and 45 in the afternoon. a chilly saturday. sunny and milder sunday. monday and tuesday we warm up with a few showers on tuesday. wednesday, thursday, friday the end of next week looks very pleasant with temperatures mostly in the 50's. john? >> all right. thanks, doug. >>
