that spawned deadly tornadoes in the midwest is on the move. >> reporter: tornado sirens roaring in tennessee. powerful winds and rain too. students at tennessee tech forced to shelter in place. the storms pummeling the densely populated northeast corridor. a downed power line burning a hole in this maryland street. air traffic snarled. at new york's laguardia airport, a close call. >> runway four to be closed due to a lightning strike. >> it's on the ground. you can see the damage. >> reporter: the twister started dropping just before dinner time tuesday. at least 25 tornadoes now reported across eight states. illinois hit hard. >> look at that. >> reporter: residents racing to safety. [ crying ] >> reporter: a trail of destruction left behind. our alex perez is southwest of chicago. >> reporter: at least a quarter of the 200 homes here in illinois were damaged by the storm.

confirming a powerful ef-3 tornado, packing 155-mile-per-hour winds tore through here. >> a lot of us lived here all our lives. never had nothing like this, but, you know, we'll get through it. >> reporter: roughly 300 miles to the south, more than 100 homes hit in the perryville, missouri area by another ef-3. massive trees splintered. and this frightening scene along interstate 55. our phillip mena is there. >> reporter: in total darkness, those powerful winds hurling these junkyard vehicles across the highway, killing a driver passing through. >> reporter: in all, at least three people dead and dozens more injured across the region. linzie janis, abc news, new york. >> wow. >> so many different amazing images from alex staensdup location to phillips. the tornado threat, we should say the good thing is lower today. but many more people will be impacted by the severe storms.

lesson in generosity. >> the surprise for one of her students that has saved the little girl's life. here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: 4-year-old lyla carreyn became very ill very quickly. she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease which caused kidney failure. her parents were told she needed a new kidney to survive. a nationwide search, but no donor was found. lyla's mother, dena, set up this meeting. she thought she was there to tell lyla's new teacher about her daughter's needs, but that teacher already knew. she had been tested, passing a note across the table. writing, soon a little piece of me will be with lyla forever. i'm lyla's kidney donor. >> you are? >> the you are? are you kidding me? oh, my god. >> reporter: this is how that teacher described that moment. >> one of the most emotional days, being able to tell somebody that you can save their child's life. >> reporter: and a major development.
