this morning on "world news now," millions in the path of a nasty storm front. >> that same system that spawned an outbreak of deadly tornados in the midwest now moves east. intense wind gusts breaking apart homes and tossing vehicles around like toys. accuweather has the latest on the brutal path of destruction. our other top lead story, the revelation that attorney general jeff sessions was in contact with the russian ambassador curing the presidential campaign. before this development, the concern was whether sessions should front the investigation into the alleged russian ties to the campaign. now he finds himself at the center of that scandal. details ahead. a new romantic twist inside the biden family. what we're finding out this morning about the romantic relationship between the widow of joe biden's son beau and

in local schools. hundreds of homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged. many families say they lost just about everything. more from abc's richard cantu. [ siren ] >> reporter: tornado sirens blairing in tennessee. the huge storm system that spawned tornadoes in the midwest is on the move. students at tennessee tech forced to shelter in place. in maryland, powerful wind and rain brought down power lines. this one burning a hole in the street. back behind the system half a dozen states are left surveying the damage. the view from the air shows the scope of the devastation. on the ground, emotions running high. >> a lot of us have lived down here all of our lives. never had nothing like this but you know we'll get through it. >> reporter: more than a dozen tornadoes now confirmed, missouri, illinois and indiana hit hard. hundreds of homes damaged or demolished. lifetimes of memories smashed or blown away.

home when a tornado tore through, ripping the house down to the foundation. >> i'm not a strong person but when you think you're about to lose your son because have you no walls you hold on tight. >> reporter: so many people left trying to process what happened and the clean-up to come. >> had to get in the bathtub to survive and my whole street is racked. now that i see it, that's my home. now it's gone. but it's just a blessing that none of my family was in there. >> reporter: the east coast is the also feeling the power of the storm. ar a terrific snarled at laguardia airport in new york. >> light sning strike. >> reporter: it's not over yet. behind ittrong wind, warnings and advisories already in effect for thursday. richard cantu, abc news, new york. >> wow, as we mentioned the storm system is now heading east. while tornados are not as likely, strong winds and cold temperatures are. >> it's quite an impressive image behind us.

accuweather's justin povick has the details good morning. >> kendis, thanks and good morning to you. that storm system responsible for all the severe weather and the tornadoes well off the coast at this point. now we're talking about some gusty winds and this could cause some travel delays of its own. along with that, we're also going to be talking about some much colder temperatures. and in fact, this is going to be the coldest air mass we have seen in quite some time. continuing into friday along with perhaps some snow showers in spots. kendis, adrienne? >> and justin, now to the firestorm of controversy brewing overnight. attorney general jeff sessions met twice last year with russia's ambassador to the u.s., something he denied under oath. one of those meetings was a private conversation in september and the other was in a group setting. during his confirmation hearing, he said he did not have communications with the russians. sessions was a top adviser to the trump campaign. as he's now overseeing at

investigation into possible contacts between russia and trump campaign staffers. some congressional democrats including nancy pelosi and elijah cummings are calling for him to step down and resign. and republican senator ripped say graham says there may be a need for a special prosecutor. >> if there is something there, and it goes up the chain of investigation, it is clear to me that yef sessions who is my dear friend cannot make this decision about trump. >> sessions released a statement overnight saying "i never met with any russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign. i have no idea what this allegation is about. it is false." the administration says the white house counsel's office has instructed president trump's aides to preserve all russia related material. and new details this morning about president trump's revised travel ban which remains on hold. sources say the new executive order on immigration will not includ

citizens. they tell abc news james mattis and others expressed concerns that keeping iraq on the list could hinder the fight against isis and say the order may take two weeks before going into effect. the rollout postponed after the president's speech. still not clear when he plans to sign it. all of wall street's major stock averages opened this morning at record high level. it sent the dow to its first close above the 21,000 mark. the dow climbed 303 points. best performance so far this year. you've heard president trump speak how the markets have done better since his election to office. the more moderate tone of president trump's address to congress helped refuel that rally we're told. most of the major averages across asia posted gains, as well. seven baltimore officers accused in a racketeering conspiracy that will includes charges of robbery and extortion. prosecut

thousands of dollars filing false police reports and inflating time sheetses. because of the arrests prosecutors in baltimore have dropped five criminal cases brought by the officers who are now charged themselves in that racketeering conspiracy. a wild police chase in louisiana ending with the driver of a stoken pickup truck losing control. flying into a restaurant parking lot. and landed on another vehicle. police say the truck was stolen by an escaped prisoner who ran over spike strips on the highway. nobody was hurt. that escapee is back in custody but kind of looks like a scene out of dukes of hazard. >> seriously. a truck has some air. >> the general lee it is not. well, authorities working themselves to the bone searching for a missing piano player in south florida. fina gan is short, has white hair and taught himself how to tickle the ivories. he's a dog. >> you had me.

he had facial hair and was wearing torn jeans. police think after checking for unlocked cars, he moved onto unlocked apartments. that's when they think he found 23-year-old tiffany ferguson and stabbed her repeatedly. >> this burglar, this murderer, left the apartment with some of the items from inside. >> reporter: ferguson was a nurse and a twin. she died at a nashville hospital. she had a roommate who said she woke up when she heard ferguson scream. in a phone interview with abc news, one of ferguson's sisters explains that there was trouble with their door. >> maybe when tiffy came in, it was left unlocked and that's how he got in. >> reporter: police have recovered a potential murder weapon, but will only describe it as a very sharp object. they are asking anyone who recognizes this man's features or even the way he walks to call them. >> steve tells us that ferguson had worked at the hospital for less than a year. >> wow. coming up in our next half hour, what oprah is now
