michelle: the president's cabinet grew today. the u.s. senate confirmed retired neurosurgeon ben carson as the new secretary of housing and urban development. an hour after carson's confirmation, they voted in rick perry as the secretary of state of energy. perry famously forgot the name of the department in 2012 when listing agencies he would eliminate if elected president. he said eliminating the department would be a mistake since then. president trump spent the day aboard the uss germed r. ford speaking to members of -- gerald r. ford speaking to members of the naver i -- navy. he also discussed an expansion plan to increase the navy. alison: right now police are investigating a threatening e-mail sent to a woman in winchester. michelle: she is the leader of a government watchdog group working to protest president trump's agenda. alison: but as richard reeve reports th

michelle: scary threats and now a man is behind bars. the man threatened to kill his wife and son and blow up buildings across montgomery county. among the targets a daycare. the man hasn't been identified at this time. abc7 was there when he was taken into custody in rockville. officers believe this started because of a battle over child custody. seven baltimore police officers face charges tonight. the counts range from robbery to drugs to filing false reports and lying on time sheets. q: the officers started the court appearances. amy aubert has more. amy: today, six of the seven officers are to remain behind bars until trial. five pleaded not guilty requesting jury trials. the judge ordered the six to appear today be held in detention until the trial date. in

witnesses have been terrified from retribution from the officers and the others and added the community would be at risk if let go. the six were escorted out in handcuffs. the detention hearing for the seventh officer is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. alison: thank you. drivers using beach drive, detour is longer than expected. the national park service says the closure between rock creek and tilden street has been extended through august. they planned for the work to wrap up for late spring. this is just phase one of what will be a three-year reconstruction project. michelle: a second traffic alert. intersection of canal and fox hall road will be closed for five weeks. that starts march 13 because of a water valve replacement project.

announcer: you're watching "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. alison: pennsylvania avenue is back open to pedestrians in front of the white house. the last pieces of fence that blocked off the area for the inauguration were removed yesterday. that was the deadline for the inauguration committee to have that area back open. michelle: the white house press corps got a gift today from one of hollywood's biggest hollywood names -- from one of the biggest hollywood names. tom hanks sent it today. this is the third expresso machine the actor sent the press corps since 2004. alison: apparently he visited and said they need more caffeine. michelle: they are

overtime. they will take good use of it. amazon says a typo was to blame for this week's shutdown of the cloud computing services. it happened in what should have been a routine debugging of amazon's billing system. amazon said someone typed a command incorrectly and instead of shutting down a few servers, the command shut down many more. the system needed a full restart that took five hours. alison: well, as you know the sun was back out today. as ryan hughes reports these are not easy tasks. ryan: it's clean-up mode in kensington. the quick moving and the powerful storm toppled trees and crushed home. >> we are booked up. we have three crws
