the town hall dancer there to make it more exciting. >> spice it up. >> democrats and republicans are clashing overnight embroiled in marathon debates on the bill that started before noon yesterday. >> lawmakers did take a brief break fueling up on pizza in the middle of the night. this picture tweeted out by the energy & commerce committee. >> and also last night, president trump met with conservative critics of the health care plan at the white house hoping to convince them to get on board. mary bruce is on capitol hill. >> reporter: with his health care plan under siege from democrats and republicans too, house speaker paul ryan is trying to calm the storm. >> i have no doubt we'll pass this because we're going to keep our promises. we're going through the inevitable growing pains from being an opposition party to becoming a governing party. >> reporter: but now, the nation's leading health care groups are piling on, joining aarp to denounce the plan. in a letter to congress, the american medical association citing the "expected decline in health insurance coverage and the potential harm it would

populations." president trump has promised insurance for everybody. >> he has committed that no one will lose their insurance and everyone will have access to coverage. everyone will have access to coverage. he has assured that. >> reporter: but some white house officials say that's just a goal. not calling it a guarantee. one early review of the plan projects that up to 10 million americans could lose their insurance. >> the american public still wonders with great anxiety what is going to happen to them personally! >> reporter: on capitol hill a group off west virginia miners and health care workers. president trump repeatedly reached out to miners and won west virginia by an overwhelming margin. but many of those here worry they could lose their health care if this plan goes through. >> i have insurance now. but i'm probably going to lose it unless this is fixed. >> what's your message to lawmakers who are pushing this bill forward? >> leave it alone. >> reporter: we brought her concerns to west virginia republican david mckinley. >> your message to these west virginians is?

relax. relax. this is a process. this isn't the final bill. >> reporter: republican leaders are looking to the president to help sell the plan. >> this is an all hands on deck because you know what? we all ran on repealing and replacing obamacare. >> reporter: the white house says they are all in. >> he is a deal-maker and he's a negotiator. he is a world class business leader, and he has been highly successful at it. so if anybody can get a deal, it's going to be donald trump. >> according to one official, he's expected to travel to kentucky on saturday. >> it's a red state that vote ford trump but also a state that's seen a major drop in the uninsured. democrats often it out kentucky as an obamacare success story. mayor bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> mary tells us hat ama is not the only health care group opposing the plan. american hospital association announcing its opposition in letter to congress. the hospital group is concerned that cover

poor will be jeopardized and also flagged changes to medicaid as a significant problem area. aha represents nearly 5,000 hospitals across the country. the federation of american hospitals says it has significant issues with the plan. days after president trump accused president obama of bugging his phones, the white house is struggling to answer questions about a possible investigation. press secretary sean spicer initially said the white house needed to find out if the president is the subject of a counter intelligence probe. minutes later spicer revised his response after he was handed a note. he then said the white house has no reason to believe the president is the target of any investigation whatsoever. as questions swirl about aged ties between president trump and russia, abc news las confirmed that former utah governor jaunt hunsman has been tapped to be the next u.s. ambassador to russia. he was a vocal critic of candidate trump during the campaign. he served as ambassador to

singapore under the first president bush and as ambassador to china under president obama. dangerous winds gusting at more than 60 miles an hour knocked out power, fueled fires across much of the nation's midsection. and also turned deadly in detroit. a fast-moving fire tore through an apartment complex moving so quickly the residents there had a tough time making their way to safety. and many didn't. five people were killed and at least four others suffered burns as well as smoke inhalation. >> we had people jumping out the windows in the back. and fire was being driven through the building by the wind. so it was a horrendous fire to fight. >> this is even horrible. just last night, detroit police declared arson as the cause of that fire. saying they now have one suspect in custody. and the unusually strong winds are also being blamed for this. toppling that tractor-trailer in northern ohio causing a temporary shutdown of interstate

the same is true for this tanker truck. that flipped over on a highway outside of milwaukee. and fire crews battling record wildfires burning across several plain states. should get some relief from improved weather conditions today. forecasters say a storm stretching into the weekend could drop an inch or more of rain from central kansas through much of oklahoma and texas. a major new development in the fight against isis in syria. at least 200 marines are on the ground in rock cag joining the battle to retake the city. they've established an outpost where they can fire artillery guns. the move cops as american-backed forces intensify their assault on the city. meanwhile, hundreds ef u.s. troops are being sent 0 kuwait to join the fight if needed. two dozen people are under arrest in the largest gun bust in the history of brooklyn, new york. prosecutors say the suspects brought more than 200 weapons into new york city from virginia. the firearms range from handguns to assault fl

of dramatic images of two firefighters caught in a back draft. this is in west palm beach, florida. they tried to enter the home. they were knocked back by an explosion of flames coming through that door. they both suffered minor injuries. but they returned to continue fighting the flames. overseas we're learning new details about the investigation into that brutal killing of a rhinoceros inside a zoo in france. >> it's being called the first poaching inside a european zoo. abc's alex marquardt is there for us. >> reporter: as two surviving rhinos huddled together, investigators launched an urths hunt for the suspected poachers who broke into that zoo outside paris. their target was this 5-year-old white rhinoceros named vince. police say the attackers killed the endangered animal with large caliber rounds, then sawed off his horn and

i felt like something needed to be done about this. >> reporter: arrested at the age of 16 for stealing a backpack, he would spend more than three years at the rikers island jail in solitary confinement. he was never tried a breakdown in the system. >> i'm always thinking about jail. i'm a mess. i'm 21 and fwlds i feel like i'm 40. >> reporter: "nightline" spoke with him in 2014, optimistic, working he earned his ged, started classes at bronx community college pulling a 3.56gpa but the psychological can trauma from jail was haunting. seven months after that interview, kalief browder hung himself. he was 22. >> they destroyed my life. my family's life. >> reporter: the truth of the hellish nightmare he endured inside rikers the harsh reality now being explored in a spike tv documentary.
