this morning on "world news now," deadly wind conditions causing all sorts of chaos across the country. fires swiftly turning into infernos as the winds gust and fuel flames. treacherous driving across the nation's highways as the forecast offers some hope. and some breaking news out of nashville where police have made an arrest in the murder of a nurse caught on surveillance. we'll have the latest developments just ahead. also new this half hour, the dramatic close call caught on camera between a multimillion dollar waterfront home and a cruise ship. >> just how close did the celebrity cruise liner come to a florida property? what the homeowners and the cruise liner are saying this morning. and can two of the hottest celebrity "a" listers now be an item? what we're finding out this

customers are still without power this morning caused by extreme wind gusts blasting across the upper midwest and great lakes. >> take a look at these images from chicago where the wind knocked out a high-rise window raining glass and debris on to a car below. the driver fortunately was not hurt. in the roschester airport, airport, they recorded a wind gust of 81 miles per hour. >> a massive system in canada has been driving those powerful winds which turned deadly in detroit. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: high winds on the move turning deadly in the upper midwest. >> there are civilians jumping out of the windows at the location. >> reporter: gusts as high as 68 miles an hour, fanning the flames at this detroit apartment complex, killing five. >> it was a horrendous fire to fight. we've got these high winds and it just drove the fire right through the building. >> reporter: a plane carrying the michigan men's basketball team and their families, aborting takeoff, sliding off

runway. no one was hurt. winds snapping huge trees. some 600,000 people in the detroit area without power. semis overturning from wisconsin to ohio. this tractor trailer flipping on interstate 280. the driver is okay. those winds part of the same system fanning the wildfires in the great plains. nearly 1.5 million acres scorched. at least six dead. >> i got a semi truck blocking half the eastbound lane now. >> reporter: this new dashcam video showing harrowing moments along interstate 70 in kansas. >> lock it up and get in! >> reporter: a state trooper telling a stranded driver to hop into his patrol car. turning around and fleeing to safety. it's now the largest fire in the state's history. our phillip mena is in neighboring oklahoma where new fires broke out. >> reporter: this is a perfect example of just how quickly these flapz can spread. we were here about 20 minutes ago, and you couldn't even see the fire, and now the flames are about 20 feet high. >> reporter: this as the high winds move east. gusts up to 76 miles an hour west of rochester, new york,

likely knocking this freight train right off its rails. >> and authorities here are warning people who have to walk near high-rises to be aware, keep their eyes open. some woips have blown out. also the ob stories at both the high connick willis and hancock towers shuts down because of the strong winds. alex perez, abc news, chicago. >> arson caused that deadly apartment fire in detroit but the intense wind made the situation that much worse. >> and officials there have made an arrest in that situation there. so they've also been fanning wildfires across the plain states. accuweather's justin povick is joining us with more. good morning, justin. >> kendis, linsey, thanks and good morning to you. very active time here into the south central plains with regards to all the fires that we have seen and all the high winds. well, today and into tomorrow, moisture is climbing. so it's not going to be as dry out there. we're also looking at a slight reduction in wind speed.

the fire danger threat as a front works its way off to the south. kendis, linsey? >> the fbi investigation is under way to track down the source of that massive leak of cia documents posted by wikileaks. officials believe whoever was responsible had to have access to one of the highly classified u.s. spy networks. the files revealed alleged hacking tools used to break into computers, cell phones and smart tvs, phone manufacturers like apple and google believe their devices are no longer vulnerable. >> fbi director james comey is making it clear that he has no plans on going anywhere anytime soon. during a cyber security conference at boston college, comey said "you're stuck with me for another six years." that means he intends to serve his entire ten-year term. some suggested he would step down after his reported rebuke of president trump after a claim that president obama tapped his phones. >>

to the bottom of the explosive wiretapping allegation by the president. republican senator lynn say graham and democrat sheldon whitehouse white degree house have formally requested information from the department of justice and the fbi. they want to know of any action taken to listen in on calls at trump tower. first lady melania trump marked international women's day by hosting a luncheon at the white house welcoming about 50 women, including her step daughter ivanka. mrs. trump spoke back kindness, equality, tolerance and the responsibility of women to help each other achieve success and how much she values freedom and equal opportunity as an immigrant. millions of women across the country observed international women's day by marching, boycotting work and wearing red. the protests were called the day without a woman organized to highlight women's economic clout. hillary clinton appeared in washington last night at the vital voices global leadership awards, an organization she found during her type

lady. she says women's voices have never been as important as they are right now. >> these are uncertain even trying times but as we all stop to look fear in the face, the result has not only been passion but action. >> former first lady michelle obama surprised a group of washington, d.c. schoolgirls to talk about the importance of education. mrs. obama later tweeted she was so impressed by those girls who represent the beauty and diversity of this country. >> a federal judge says hawaii can proceed with its revised travel ban lawsuit. the state is seeking a temporary restraining order. attorneys for hawaii say the order will cause grave injury to muslims in that state. the judge has scheduled a hearing on the case for march 15th. that's next wednesday, and that's a day before the revised ban is due to go into effect. hawaii is the first state to challenge the revised ban. breaking overnight, nashville police have arrested a suspect in the brutal stabbing of a 23-year-old nurse.

christopher drew mclawhorn is charged in connection with the death of tiffany ferguson. police released surveillance video of a suspect after the murder ten days ago. ferguson's roommate was awakened by the sounds of her screams and called 911. >> we think he was there committing burglaries and during the course of the burglary of miss ferguson's apartment he committed a murder. police say the investigation was nonstop. mclawhorn has denied any involvement in the crime. at&t is still trying to figure out what caused a 911 outage for some of its cell phone customers. last night customers were not able to connect with 911 for a few hours. services were affected in texas, florida and tennessee. among other states and the district of columbia. customers were given alternate numbers to call just in case there was an emergency. we'll switch gears to an update. an exciting one we've been following. giraffe mom.

a police officer's lapel cam captures the frantic moments after a car slams into a cafe. this happened last thursday in santa fe, new mexico. the car hit a number of people. they're all expected to be okay. police say an 83-year-old woman

discovered later sitting in the cafe was the driver. she told officers she tried to put the car in park but something went wrong. no charges have been filed. we're going to turn to another close call, this one in florida between a luxury home and a luxury liner. >> the frightening incident was all caught on tape as a terrified fort lauderdale couple watched helplessly as a giant cruise ship appeared to head straight for their house. here's abc's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: caught on tape, a cruise ship's frightening close call with a fort lauderdale home. >> get out! >> reporter: bill todhunter and his wife yasmine ran to their deck screaming when the equinox appeared to be heading straight for them. >> i looked up and all i could see was the bow of the ship so i knew something was wrong. >> that's when i was panicked and i was worried the house was going to get hit. >> reporter: here you can see the ship throwing its thrusters into reverse roughly 100 feet away. this isn't the first cruise ship close encounter.

last summer, rough water caused another celebrity cruise ship to slam into this dock in alaska. in this incident, the pilot's association says the ship was directed to this route because of strong winds, but the pilot was skillfully keeping it within the channel, then proceeded to safely guide the vessel out to sea. >> they have come close, but not literally facing and pointing right at a home 100 feet offshore. >> reporter: celebrity cruise line says no one was in danger and the ship did not run aground, and if it had, they would be required to report it. >> eva pilgrim, abc news, fort lauderdale, florida. >> did look pretty close though. >> it did. >> when we come back, the latest and greatest reported celebrity romance merging the world of sports and music. >> and the celebrity divorce that's now apparently on hold. but just one mucinex lasts 12 hours. let's end this. ♪ welcome back. every once in awhile, man's best friend needs a little help now and then from men. >> this morning we're hearing about an entire community that refused to give up on one family's dog. here's abc's david muir with the dramatic rescue. >> reporter: this is 12-year-old sage. safe at home now right there in her bed. the labrador lost her sight a few months ago to glaucoma and a tumor. and then lost her way after wandering from her home in boulder creek, california. sage's family, devastated. >> it was horrible. we were so heartbroken and just feeling so bad that she was out there. >> reporter: friends helped search the thick woods behind their home. there were reports of flash floods. worries about mountain lions. and as the hours and days

passed, they feared they would never see sage again. >> we had so many people helping with the search. we had signs up, we had it posted everywhere. >> reporter: eight days, and no sign of sage. then their neighbor, an off-duty firefighter, dan estrada, had been part of the search effort was on a hike in the woods, when he spotted something beside a creek motionless. but sage was still alive. dan's friend capturing the moment. >> i look over and see sage laying on the ground right with her head in the stream. i jumped in the stream, i was super happy. i put my arms around her and hugged her and threw her over my shoulders and carried her up the mountain. >> reporter: sage on his shoulders and soon sage's family, beth and her son, noah there, overjoyed as they take their dog home. >> i was hugging everybody, you know. it was just amazing. >> reporter: amazing and, that firefighter says sage has taught us all a lesson. >> it's been very harsh conditions and that dog had a strong will to live and i think everybody has a lesson to be learned from that. don't give up. >> david muir, abc news, new
