going to feel the arctic air. we have team coverage. our chief meteorologist doug hill with more on the plummeting temperatures. jonathan: richard reeve with a look at how the swing from farm to cold could be unprecedented for the cherry blossoms. let's get to doug with the forecast. doug: the cold air moving in. snowshowers across the mountains from the great flakes. maybe a flurry in the suburbs to the rest of town. that is all we expect as far as precipitation. we expect temperatures to slowly and steadily drop. drop to 31 by 11:00 p.m. tonight and in the 20s tomorrow. wind chill even colder. western zone,11 and teens. air temperatures in the met erow is upper teens to 20's. you can shave ten degrees off that because of the gusty winds. through the weekend, plenty cold. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. wind chills in the morning single digits of 10 to 14 degrees. wind chills will stay in the

the winds will slacken a bit on sunday but a cold weekend. so the cold air in place. we get through sunday as the cold air is locked in. through the day area of low pressure moves north. it's become significant east coast snowstorm. will it be a snowstorm for washington or philadelphia or all of us, a mix? all snow? we are working on that. we will have a full discussion update for you but put it on the calendar. late monday night and again on tuesday. some wintry weather. looks like it's certain around the area. alison: i guess it's about time. thank you very much. well, if you go to the tidal basin, of course, you will see the trees. jonathan: some are starting to show. if you head down there it's beautiful. it seems like a week away from the peak on this stuff. but will they survive the cold snap? alison: richard reeve is on the tidal basin. rich, here, every degree

matters, right? richard: absolutely. 27 degrees you could lose 10% of your blossoms. 24 degrees and you might lose as much as 90%. for the delicate blossoms, this has been a mean season. it's all about the roller coaster weather. unprecedented national park service calls it. the first days of the record warmth pushing back the peak start date to march 14. bitter cold moving it forward to the 19th. the big worry now is the potential for the bitter cold. reach before the 24 degree mark and many of the blossoms could die. turn brown and simply fall off. literally every year since 1921 there has been a peak bloom listed. they are tracking the forecast closely for the next five to seven day. the cold is definitely the enemy. >> 24 degrees or lower, we could look at perhaps as

if it happens it's a perform storm of conditions that may lead to a less than stellar peak bloom year. richard: the park service is keeping a close watch on the weather forecast. coming up at 5:00, call or should they do anything -- call or should they do anything to protect the trees? we'll exam that coming up. richard reeve, abc7 news. alison: this is video from last year. we reached the peak bloom in mid-march. something we have done ever year since 1921. making what is possible unprecedented. the festival has gone on for more than 100 years. the blooming period begins when 20% of the blossoms open. peak block is when 70% are out. the whole stage can last two weeks. one more note, the annual rock 'n' roll marathon is tomorrow morning. if you plan to use public transportation, metro will not open early for this particular race. so if y

are plenty of closures that will go into place overnight. we have everything you need to know on the website wjla.com. jonathan: 24 hours ago we showed you this video we obtained of two guys running in a gun store in rockville and ransacking the place. two dozen handguns and rifles ripped from the cases and the racks and they did it in less than 80 seconds. kevin lewis is back on the story today. this is part of a troubling nationwide trend we come to find out. kevin: certainly. the a.t.f. just finished putting together a detailed report last month about the increase. the reason varies depending on the part of the country you live in. in the charlotte area, the a.t.f. has seen an uptick in gangs breaking in to gun stores to add to their weapon arsenal. and then nationwide we have graphics to show you here. since 2012 the a.t.f. says burglaries and the robberies of the license gun shop increase by

last year criminals stole 7800 fire arms from gun stores. georgia, texas, florida had the highest numbers but our region is not immune. last year they hit 23 stores in virginia and seven stores in maryland. as of this hour, montgomery county police still looking for two burglars who broke in the united gun shop early yesterday morning taking 24 handguns and seven long guns. they were in and out of the store in 80 seconds. >> there are organized gangs looking to acquire it for themselves and the individuals that are looking for and see an taunt to acquire firearms knowing they can get a good price for them, whether they are trying to feed their own narcotic habit or just trying to make more money.

federal drug in detroit is stepping in because he wants to study the plea deal. the way it stands, v.w. agreeing to pay $2.8 billion criminal fine on top of the $1.5 billion used to set the civil suits. they admit the cars have software that made to full emission tests but it's not clear when it will get itself wrapped up. alison: the labor department set the economy added 237,000 jobs in february. the first full month of president donald trump's time in office. abc7 chief political correspondent scott thuman looks at if the administration should claim full credit. scott: trump went on this view of the jobs report as a candidate -- >> don't believe the phony numbers. scott: -- to this view -- >> we're pleased to see the jobs report out. scott: steve ryan who was a senate committee staffer under the reagan admini

good politics. is there whenever something happens on your watch that is a good thing it's political. scott: according to multiple exit polls trump won the white house in part because more voters believe he, a billionaire businessman was the right person to handle the economy. february marks the second month in a row of more than 200,000 job growth with the unemployment rate now down to 4.7%. stocks continue to rally. confidence numbers are up. ryan says some of the changes may have more to do with perception. >> if there is a belief that the economy is going to grow under a particular president, i think some of those are self-fulfilling prophecies. scott: a perception that democrats in washington after a bruising election cycle want to change. they believe the credit for the number belongs to president trump's predecessor. >> this is an obama jobs report. we had the longest job g

distress. alison: it was a lively press conference. he said, "don't make me move the podium" and that referenced "saturday night live." funny. jonathan: speaking of distress. talk about the redskins. it wouldn't be a surprise if all the flags were upside down. alison: scot mccloughan is gone and kirk cousins wants to quit. is it going to be okay? >> the circus that is the redskins. jonathan: they need a "kumbaya" moment. scott: never a dull moment. i will tell you this. the team is not boring. day after firing general manager scot mccloughan the redskins quarterback kirk cousins officially signed his franchise tag. that is according to his agent. well, this means that cousins will remain in washington for at least one more season. making $24 million. he can nowbe

the redskins reviewed all the options on the table. they can still negotiate with cousins on a long-term deal until july 15. at that point there can be no deal signed until after the redskins season. also concerning, the team needs a new general manager during the critical time of the year. mccloughan is gone. and according to espn, nfl network analysts mike mayok emerged as the candidate to be the skins' next g.m. mayok has zero nfl front office experience. the 58-year-old worked at nfl network since 2005 as a broadcaster for "thursday night football." he interviewed for a raiders front office job when al davis was running the show. so today he told the "washington post" there has been no official contact with the redskins about the g.m. opening remember the free agent already started and the draft is april 27.

alison: as you know, we have had problems in the d.c. area with packs of bikers. now a new attack caught on camera. this was in san francisco. you can see the pack tries to slow down a man in a car. he stops, gets out. and then he is attacked. >> that party got out of the vehicle to confront the motorcyclists. unfortunately the verbal altercation escalated to a physical fought. alison: all of the bikers were gone by the time police arrived. so no arrests were made in this case. the bikers did break the driver's leg. we are told he will be okay. jonathan: we can laugh because she is just fine. but probably one of the best videos we have seen in a long time. the little girl, couple things to point out. this

jonathan: this weekend athletes from all over the world are traveling to austria to the 2017 world winter games. alison: a member of the team usa is a washingtonian. as mike carter-conneen reports he only started speed skating two years ago. mike: for gray, it's black and white. he wants a gold medal. >> i have to do my best. mike: the junior has a cognitive disability and became involved with special olympics a couple of years ago playing basketball, and other sports but he will compete in the 2017 winter world

speed skating. >> i couldn't get it. i kept trying and trying. mike: he started out with hockey gear but now he has advanced to actual speed skates with 13 inch skates. he is the only d.c. athlete traveling to the games in austria and this is his first time out of the country. no doubt one of many firsts on the trip. it's clear from the smile on his face he is excited. what is unclear is whether he is fast enough to win a medal at the games. the coaches say that is not the point and not how they measure success. we don't care where you finish. just give us your best. mike: a mind set that he has embraced, along with the sport. >> if i fall i'll get right back up. if i fall i'm hurrying and get right back up. mike: in northeast washington,

doug: i am still having a hard time getting my head around the fact yesterday was 74 and tonight we are talking about wind chills of 26 and that is the deal. the air mass coming close to the arctic circle in northern canada and it's delivered by the gusty winds. tomorrow the best is 26 for a high. plenty of sunshine. sunday we will start with sunshine and we may warm up a bit. the reason the clouds increase is we have a come bee deal where the low pressure systems are phasing together. this looks like the coastal low develop monday night. supper level support will come in and that will give us the possibility of snow. that is one model. this one in the middle is the center of the ensemble of the european model which is good.

days if you are convicted of a kraime with a biased enhance ment, the maximum penalty can go up 50%. if you're convicted for 10 years, int could become 15 -- it could become 15 years. the city officials are concerned about increase of hate crimes in the city. at a news conference, mayor bouz bouz had array -- mayor bowser had array of the citizens to point out that the number of reported by hate crimes soared in d.c. between 2015 and 2016 which just ended up 62%. the participants talk about the impact in the area. >> the bottom line is they feel safe, safe to go to school and church. that is the job. >> i have to deliver the bad news we had an increase in hate crimes in our city. in 2016, we had 10

new fbi headquarters in maryland or virginia is on hold. the general services administration announced they will not make a decision where to build until congress fully funds the project. there are two sites trying to convince the feds to move out of d.c. today on pennsylvania avenue, marching right up to the white house. dakota access pipeline protesters are taking to the street to voice concerns. some are on the mall all week long. one of the president's first executive order was to approve the project. jonathan: maryland is joining a growing list of states challenging trump's updated version of the travel ban. he dissolved the first version and now the new one targets six muslim majority nations instead of seven, dropping iraq from the list. it no longer includes religious distinctions. a brutal attack while out for a run in seattle sunday. she stopped to use a public restroom at a popular mark with gary steiner, a known sex offender allegedly jumped out of the stall and assaulted her. she fought back. >> i was able to pull myself out through the front of the stall. i started to feel like i was going to lose consciousness. i got another surge of adrenaline and i reached for the door. i was able to get out. alison: wow! she locked steiner the bathroom until police rived and he was taken into custody. she believes self-defense lessons saved her life. she fought back with tactics she had just learned about three weeks prior. jonathan: wow! small plane caught fire while trying to land in north carolina. this happened in edneyville southeast of asheville. according to the fire chief, the 84-year-ol
