>> this is a stormwatch 7 winter weather alert. jonathan: right now, the snow is sticking in some spots. alison: what's happening right now is critical to what you will see when you wake up, and the closures are coming in. we have fairfax, prince william in virginia. jonathan:

opm will make a decision by 4:00 a.m. there are more closures at the bottom of the screen. miles: just a couple of in this one can be a huge difference in snow totals. coverage,has team with reporters deployed across maryland, virginia, and d.c., but we start with chief meteorologist steve rudin -- or one of our meteorologists, steve rudin. steve: snow has overspread the area, now under a winter storm warning that includes all areas shaded in pink, frederick county, montgomery county. further to the east, anne arundel county, prince george's, charles county, a winter weather advisory, with more rain and sleet as opposed to snow. speaking of the snow, we will get an update on where the snow was located and where it is headed with chief meteorologist doug hill. doug: south and east ofhe

the areas north and west of the city will see all the snow piling up, but it looks as though this intrusion of warmer air above the surface will change from all snow, to snow, sleet, and freezing rain. the futurecast shows temperatures just a little bit above freezing. the transition develops overnight. a.m., a lot of sleet and rain. further to the north, all snow. temperatures, but tough driving with a heavy snow. we think about noon, as the storm pulls off come everybody may change back to snow before it all moves out. gusty wind will be the big story. everything will re-fries tomorrow night -- re-freeze tomorrow night, wednesday night, which will lead to

conditions. us go to our snow zone with brad bell standing by. you said this would be the bull's-eye of the storm, and it is snowing now for sure. this started about 90 minutes ago with a brief period of rain, sleet, and since then it has been snowing in bursts. right now we are getting a good bit. this is the sidewalk that was in the shady side of the buildings today. the snow has started to accumulate. that's a pretty good bit of snow , just about an inch or so. on church straight, this is different -- on church street. this is/was the most part. the salt truck came through earlier. across the street, where the sun shined

concrete are warm and we are not getting accumulations so far. about an hour ago, i wiped this sign off to give you an idea of how fast it is starting to fall now. that is about an inch on this sign in the last hour. it is march 13, so you will see some unusual things. and this is one of them. the cherry tree in downtown frederick is in bloom, with pink blossoms covered by snow. i don't know if that will damage them or not, but that is one of the things that you see, cherry blossoms in the snow. in frederick, brad bell, abc 7 news. now i will send it to my colleague, jeff goldberg, who is in loudoun county checking out the conditions. jeff? we have been in snow track all evening. we have seen the snow coming down the p

hours, sticking to the pavement, getting dangerous for walking. it has been accumulating the past couple hours, the heavy, sticky snow. the roads, though, are definitely slick. that has been the case the past several hours. people gettingaw everything they need from the grocery stores, provisions for staying in for a few days. milk, serial, the things that you would need for being inside. some people were being prepared to stay in for about two or three days. we know that loudoun county schools are closed tuesday. the plow truck drivers expect the conditions to get slick, by about 2 a.m., 3:00 a.m. some are ready for spring to come, but others are excited about the storm. >> i love the weather, so i don't mind snow. >> i was pretty done with winter

jeff: a lot of people feel that way. virginia governor terry mcauliffe declared a state of emergency in virginia, meaning state police and national guard can help local agencies respond if there are problems during the storm in the next 24 hours. live in leesburg, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. jonathan: president trump is among those watching the weather. he met this evening with mayor muriel bowser and metro g.m. paul wiedefeld discussing the preparations for the storm. stephen tschida joins us live from the district. i think the picture tells the story. it's really coming down. stephen: it just started in the past couple minutes really coming down heavily. it is starting to accumulate. it is starting to pile up on top of this car.

will be working from home all day tomorrow. live, this is the departure board, all flight schedule tomorrow morning. butto bottom, nothing cancellations. not everything will flight is canceled, and you should check with your airline, but the majority of them tomorrow morning are canceled at reagan. a similar story at bwi and dulles. the airports are warning it will be a long day tomorrow. even if you have a flight later in the day, it could be affected by the cancellations and delays earlier in the day. live at reagan national airport, tom roussey, abc 7 news. alison: patients will -- patience will be key. metro is suspending metro access until wednesday at the earliest. metro rail is running normally and will be open at 5 a.m., but on a saturday schedule.

inches of snow to suspend rail service. is runningus service on a severe snow plan in the morning. many lines will not be running. service and restoration will be dependent on the road conditions. jonathan: just a couple of miles can make a big difference in the jackpot and nothing. montgomery county could have a big spread from south to north. kevin lewis is in the middle of the reward -- is in the middle of durwood, where the plows are loading up. kevin: this is one of the largest salt farms on the east coast. the snow is coming down nice and steady and this puddle is now slushy. our crew car is covered with snow, even the license plate covered while we have been parked. salt spreaders are on roadways in montgomery county.

get harder than further to the south, chevy chase, kensington, things of that nature. and one week from today, monday, march 20, the first day of spring. how is that for a laugh? kevin lewis, abc 7 news. steve: all right, here we go. we are in the heart of the storm in terms of when we expect the heaviest snow overnight. the threat midnight through 6:00 a.m. will be critical. doug: not only for snow and sleet, but what happens as we go through time, we go from a high impact until 6 a.m., and then towards 9:00 a.m. we start to scale down. the closer you get to pennsylvania, the bigger the story. look how widespread this winter storm warning is, from the west in virginia come all the way to maine. and the blizzard warninha

big storm develops off of the delmarva peninsula and explodes in the atmosphere. this could be one for the history books. points north and west, we continue until 2 p.m. with the winter storm warning. inth and east, we transition precipitation. a lot of heavy snow in the metro area, and then we have sleet and rain. what will happen in the next several hours as we will start to see the rain/snow line move its way to the north and west. areas like this to the north will stay all snow. the really big snow totals will pileup early in the morning. here is the flow in the atmosphere. the percent arose, petition tight, into sleet and rain, that will be the story overnight. -- as it slowly erodes, the precipitation will develop. had this been further out to

more snow, but that is not the case. it will be a tough storm as we slowly improved towards the afternoon and evening. the question is, how much snow will we see? steve: snow accumulating around the immediate metro area from outside the window here in rosslyn, snow on roadways and paper boxes. by the time this moves out, we could be looking at 2 to 5 inches around the d.c. metro. the further north, hiram mounce, the further south, the lower end, and extreme southern maryland mainly rain. the jackpot will to the north, along the mason-dixon line, 10 to 14 inches not out of the question. radar, in terms of what we expect with futurecast, the snow totals, look at d.c. 2 inches. it does not move a whole lot during the early morning, but notice what happens further north. th

very close, where they could pick up over a foot of snow by the time the system moves out. aroundain, 2 to 5 inches the d.c. metro. the big jackpot outside of new york city, over 20 inches of snow possible. then we are talking about wind gusts. once the system has moved out, things will improve. ocean city, wind gusts early on of 65 miles per hour, with the gusty wind slowly easing through the afternoon tomorrow. the highs will have a hard time making it out of the 30's. the 10 day outlook, we finally get a bit of sunshine by about midweek. st. patrick's day looking good, 44 degrees. this weekend, back into the 50's, at least saturday. next week, back in the middle to upper 50's. whatever snow we do see around here, that will quickly melt. jonathan: steve, thanks. coming up
