3:31 am
did it yet again end in heart break? the hot finale in finland that left one woman out in the cold. our bachelor analyst is here to hand out the final rose on this tuesday, march 14th. >> finally, it's over. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." they were out in the cold in finland on the bachelor but it doesn't look much different outside here. >> finland kind of looks like times square and washington, d.c. at this point except nick is out out there. he will be later on. we're going to get to that a little bit later. but we're going to start with much of the nation bracing for what's shaping up to be a hick blizzard >> two powerful storm systems on a collision course over the ohio valley with one system moving east from the midwest, the other heading north along the east coast. they're set to combine into a monster nor'easter taking aim on more than 60 million americans in the northeast. >> let's seats how things are
3:32 am
morning hour. live shot of new york's times square. there is a little bit of precipitation that is coming down. but the city is expected to get socked with up to a foot and a half of snow. >> here's what it looks like in washington, d.c. that's the capitol building all lit up, expected to get at least half a foot of snow. >> many schools are closed all around the d.c. area. that system coming out of the midwest has already dumped more than a foot of snow across many hears giving chicago its first major snowfall since december. >> it looks pretty from inside. >> yeah. >> but you don't really want to go outside. >> no. >> also on that note as you can imagine traveling is coming to an all but stand still across eight different states. with more than 6300 flights canceled between yesterday and today. abc's maggie ruehle kicks off our coverage. >> reporter: the midwest is getting the first taste of this late winter storm and with it disastrous driving conditions freezing temps and nearly a foot of snow outside milwaukee causing this chain reaction wreck involving three semis and a dozen other vehicles.
3:33 am
now all eyes on what's about to come for the northeast. >> every report we've had on this is it's going to snow hard and fast for a long period of time. and it will create whiteout conditions. >> reporter: that storm set to combine with another one in the gulf and move up the coast as a powerful nor'easter even the national weather service calls life threatening. with blizzard warnings across the midwest and northeast, meaning snow falling at a blistering rate, 2 to 4 inches an hour. add to that expected wind speeds of 35 to 50 miles per hour creating visibility less than a quarter mile and we have a dangerous and messy mix. airlines are pro actively canceling thousands of flights across the country. >> hopefully i'll get on one of these flights. i'll see what the other alternatives are. >> reporter: as many as 60 million people stand in the path of seriously nasty winter weather. >> it should be a very serious blizzard, one that everyone should take seriously. >> mag
3:34 am
this has been a very difficult system to forecast. >> tracking the storm all night though lucky for us, we have accuweather's paul williams for us. paul, thanks so much for staying up late with us. and what do we know so far? >> what we know right now is this is just the beginning and the final chapter is yet to be written. we have a low pressure system that's going to intensify as it moves to the north. whiteouts rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. which means we could have some areas receive one, two, and even three feet of snow in some areas. we have the threat of thundersnow. if this isn't enough, this low combined with the other one that moved across from the midwest, there's another part of this that's really a big problem. we have strong winds along the entire east core. 40 to 60-mile-per-hour winds that will accompany this storm system as it strengthens and moves up the east coast. so yes, it's a serious storm. it is a meteorological monster and it's ripping its way right up
3:35 am
paul. but the big question now, how long will this all last? >> okay. i'm glad you said that because we talked about it being difficult to track initially. now here's the latest model run. starting at about 6:00, we can see this is just rain right here. but the blue we're talking about the snow, the darker blue is the trouble area. we're looking at a foot or more of snow. we start to see it moving by 7:30. it's heading down to the d.c. area over towards new york, philadelphia. watch that by lunchtime, new york getting pounded. new york getting pounded by this snow by noon. and then as this lifts a bit further, boston has the opportunity to get pounded with a mix of freezing rain and snow and this continue not only into tuesday evening but even going into wednesday. so that's why i'm saying the saga has just begun. just because you haven't been hit hard yet, hang around. it's headed your way. >> great,
3:36 am
that's very uplifting. >> i'm so glad the first time we have paul live, he's like all full of good news. thanks. >> thank you so much. >> get some hot chocolate and find someone to cuddle up with. >> all right, thank you. let's move on. >> that wasn't enough. >> he wasn't taking what you were putting out there anyway. >> thank you. to the morning's other big story indeed. it appears when president trump accused former president obama of wiretapping trump tower, he didn't really mean wiretapping. >> okay. >> that's the explanation from the white house press secretary, sean spicer on the same date trump administration asked for more time to prove the president as accusation. spicer explained he didn't mean the term in a literal sense. the key it seems is the quotation marks. >> the president used the word wiretap in quotes to mean broadly surveillance and other activities. he literally had it in quotes. he said they were in
3:37 am
overall. >> so whatever surveillance the president meant, the justice department now has until monday to provide proof. the house intelligence committee says it may subpoena the information if the deadline is missed. >> is this an episode of "friends"? >> i think it was just quotations. >> all right. and there has been predictably a partisan reaction to a new report about the republican health care plan backed by president trump. congressional budget analysts say the plan won result in 14 million americans losing their coverage next year and by 2026 that, number would rise to 24 million. those numbers have house democrats now urging republicans to stop working on this bill, but house speaker paul ryan says the republican plan is better than obamacare because it doesn't force people to buy expensive coverage and he has the backing of president trump. >> the house plan will expand choice, lower costs and ensure health care access for all. we're negotiating with everybody. it's a big fat beautiful negotiation. >> the report also found
3:38 am
the plan would significantly reduce the deficit. so far that current plan has been approved by two house committees. speaker ryan wants the full house to consider it next week. even if it is approved by the house, the bill faces an unclear future in the senate. several republican senators have already voiced strong opposition to it and some have declared it dead and arrival. >> warm thoughts coming up. make a visit to spring training. when we come back, tim tebow. >> oh, you have my attention. >> timmy. there you go, timmy tebow in action. >> and later, from one bachelor to another. >> there you go. >> nick's pick. our senior bachelor analyst is here to break down the "bachelor" finale. you're watching "world news now" >> announcer: "world news now" weather brought to you by clearasil rapid action.
